    Overview

Exception was started in late 2013 by developer Traxmaster Software. Initially intended as a precision platformer with combat elements, the game's scope eventually expanded to include a level transformation mechanic which alters level geometry in realtime. The title passed Steam Greenlight in May 2015 and release is anticipated in summer 2019.

    Gameplay

The game plays like many precision platformers, relying heavily on a wall-jump mechanic to bypass obstacles and advance to new areas. The player also has a range of combat abilities, most of which are unlocked as the game progresses.

Level design heavily revolves around the title's level transformation mechanic. This features allows entire levels to rotate and transform as the player advances, unlocking access to new areas and revealing new challenges.

Each level is timed with the player awarded up to four 'stars' based on performance relative to a set of baseline metrics. These stars are accumulated as the player advances and can be used to unlock new special attacks. The attacks include a variety of projectile attacks, an airborne stomp attack and upward spinning attack. Scattered throughout the levels are missing 'bytes', items which can be collected to enhance the player's special attacks.

Bonuses are awarded to the player for each run when exceptional maneuvers are completed, such as destroying several enemies in a single jump and utilizing special attacks in creative ways. The bonuses contribute to the player's final level time. An online leaderboard offers performance comparison with other players.
