Is 999 a adventure game with puzzle and whatnot or more a visual novel?

Both? There's a lot of text, but there's also many puzzles as well. Probably more of an adventure game, but there are several different endings and you have to replay the game several times to achieve the true one.

It is an adventure game similar to something like Professor Layton, but it does have visual novel trappings.

In general terms though it is much more of a game than most visual novels.

It's as close to a hybrid as you get. There are plenty of puzzles, but I feel the focus is greatly on the story, especially when you start to figure out the overarching mystery. I also never had to consult a guide or any such thing for any of the puzzles, so they aren't the super frustrating and obscure variety you find in some adventure games.
