    The AEK-971 is chambered in 5.45 by 39mm, the same round used by the AK-74. It was one of the designs entered in the ABAKAN contest, but it lost. Development proceeded anyway, and in 2000 small batches were made for Russian MVD troops. In 2006 the production ceased when the manufacturing plant dumped all military production.
