Overview

Alien Soldier is a sci-fi side-scrolling run-'n'-gun game developed by Treasure (Company) and published by Sega (Company) for the Sega Genesis in Japan on February 24, 1995 and in Europe on May 1995. It also received a downloadable release in North America for the Sega Channel (Concept) sometime in the same year.

Developed by the studio behind Gunstar Heroes (Game), Alien Soldier puts players in the role of an avian supersoldier who wages a one-man war against an evil army of other genetic experiments in the future year 2015. The game is known for its unique level structure, where each of the 25 stages focuses on a unique boss battle and have little traversal prior to the fight. It also features a variety of weaponry (which can be swapped between) and special abilities, including a quick teleporting dash, a beam that deflect enemy bullets into health pickups, the ability to hover in the air.

The game's backstory is set on the planet Sierra ("A-Earth" in the Japanese version), where Epsilon-Eagle, the leader of the "Scarlet" terrorist group of genetic experiments, was banished into sub-space. Xi-Tiger, the group's new leader, found that Epsilon has implanted himself as a parasite in a young boy (known in the Japanese version as Fō Misaki). When a hostage situation goes awry, the boy's rage and sense of justice causes him to use Epsilon's powers in order to transform himself into an avian supersoldier (while the evil of the original Epsilon split off to find his own body).

The game was later included in the Japanese PS2 compilation Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 25: Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box and the 2018 compilation Sega Genesis Classics (Game). It was also digitally re-released for the Wii (Platform) (as a Virtual Console (Concept) title) in October-November 2007, the PC (Platform) (as part of the Sega Genesis Classics series) on January 26, 2011, and for the Nintendo Switch (Platform) (as part of the original system's Nintendo Switch Online service) on March 17, 2022. It was also included in both the Sega Genesis Mini and Sega Genesis Mini 2 mini-consoles.
