Alderney

Alderney is the last of the four playable areas unlocked by the player in GTA IV, opened up after the mission "Three Leaf Clover." To date, the state of Alderney has only appeared in Grand Theft Auto IV and its two expansion "episodes." It is based on New Jersey, specifically the counties just outside New York City. It is mostly suburban and middle class, with a diverse population (including a large Italian-American presence). The state is dense with different areas throughout.

The name "Alderney" comes from an island in the English Channel. This is fitting as New Jersey was also named after an island in the English Channel.

Municipalities in Alderney

Alderney City

Alderney City is part of the Liberty City Metro area though it is in a different state. As the name implies, Alderney City is very similar Jersey City. The city was also inspired by the real life cities of Newark and Trenton, but its large Korean-American community is more characteristic of Bergen county cities like Fort Lee. Koreatown is one of three areas in the city, along with Downtown and Riverside. Aside from the small Korean neighborhood, most of the city is offices and high-rises. The Italian and Korean mobs both control parts of the city, along with the Spanish Lords.

Niko Bellic receives a safehouse in Alderney City from Ray Boccino following completion of the missions "A Long Way to Fall" and "Smackdown." Unlike some of the other safehouses in Liberty City, Roman Bellic does not live with him.

Leftwood

Leftwood is a township north of Alderney City, inspired by places in Hudson and Bergen counties. The name could be a reference to either Englewood or Westwood, two similar areas in Bergen county. The Portuguese-American presence is similar the Ironbound neighborhood in Newark. Leftwood has homes and smaller apartment buildings, as well as some stores and a community hall.

Westdyke

Located north of Leftwood is Westdyke, a sparsely populated suburb said to be the wealthiest township in Alderney. Crime boss Jimmy Pegorino lives here, in one of the township's many mansions. This area bares a resemblance to the Bergen county town of Alpine, where celebrities like Chris Rock and Jay-Z own large homes. There is also a beachside cliff area to the north and east that is like the Hudson River Palisades. Westdyke is also home to Alderney Casino, a reference to the notoriously loose gambling laws in New Jersey.

Berchem

Berchem is a centrally-located township in Alderney, a mix of residential and commercial buildings similar to Alderney City. There are also more affluent apartments and shops located on the main thoroughfare, Vitullo Avenue. Actual landmarks from the cities of Hoboken and Elizabeth are included, like an homage to Edwin A. Stevens Hall (of the Stevens Institute of Technology). The name Berchem may be a reference to the Berchem district of Antwerp, which borders the Hoboken district.

Normandy

Normandy is an industrial district, meant to represent Military Ocean Terminal in Bayonne, New Jersey. It is a seaport town along the West River between Alderney and Liberty City, located south of Alderney City. There are no residences in Normandy, just industrial buildings, gas and storage tanks, and the harbor.

Acter

Acter is located south of Berchem, and west of Normandy. It is primarily an industrial city with some low-income housing, based on Kearny, New Jersey. Home to the Alderney chapter of the Lost MC, Acter is one of the most dangerous parts of the state. Many homes have already been abandoned. The main landmark in Acter is a recreation of Satriale's Pork Store, which itself was made famous as one of the main locales on The Sopranos.

Acter Industrial Park is a heavily industrialized district in South Alderney, home to factories, power plants, and oil refineries. It is also home to Alderney State Correctional Facility, where Gerald McReary is an inmate. Niko Bellic is the only one of the three playable protagonists who is able to enter the prison without drawing a three-star wanted level.

Tudor

Tudor is an industrial and residential township, made up of housing projects and large apartments. Phil Bell lives here. The area is said to be based on Elizabeth. Honkers, a strip club owned by Jimmy Pegorino and operated by Bell, may be based on the Satin Dolls club in Lodi, New Jersey. Satin Dolls was also a main locale in The Sopranos, though in the show the club was called Bada Bing.

Port Tudor is east of Tudor and Acter, and is the main seaport for the whole state.
