    Overview

Alex Mason is the main player-controlled character of " Call of Duty: Black Ops." He is a member of Operation 40 and the Studies and Observation Group, two top-secret squads of the CIA.

During the course of the campaign in Call of Duty: Black Ops, events from Mason's past are revealed as he is interrogated by people that aren't revealed until the end of the game. The majority of missions in Black Ops are flashbacks that Mason recalls.

In the first mission of the game, Mason and his squad mates are trying to escape Cuba via airplane after assassinating who they thought was Fidel Castro. However, a roadblock forms at the end of the runway. Mason jumps from the plane as it speeds down the runway and takes control of an AA gun. He uses it to destroy the roadblock, allowing his teammates to successfully escape. However, he is captured and after it's revealed that they killed Castro's double and not Castro himself, he's put in a Russian gulag called Vorkuta.

While he was in Vorkuta, he was brainwashed by three men - Kravchenko, Dragovich, and Steiner - who "programmed" him to assassinate United States President John F. Kennedy. However, Viktor Reznov, who befriended Mason, sabotaged the operation and made it so that he would kill the three men instead. Mason actually met Reznov when they were both placed in special care following a fight that broke out between Mason himself and some of Reznov's men. Eventually, Mason participates in a great escape with Reznov, who leads all of the prisoners in a great revolt against the gulag guards. Mason escapes, but Reznov is supposedly captured.

Reznov escapes his second capture, and makes several more appearances throughout the game where he fights alongside Mason for more missions. At the end of the game, however, it is revealed that in reality, Reznov died during the escape attempt; every appearance he made after that moment was the result of a mentally unstable Mason hallucinating.

Alex Mason returns in the sequel, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, where he shares the protagonist status with his son, David; half the game takes place in 2025, after Alex has died, and is from David's perspective, and the other half are flashback missions where the player controls Alex, taking place in the 1980s, near the end of the Cold War. These missions are depicted as 'stories of the old days' as related to David by Alex's friend Frank Woods. But you can save Mason from getting killed. How you ask? In the mission Odysseus, shoot the masked guy in the foot not the head. if you do this at the end you see mason in the cut scenes. (1000% true)
