    amiibo

    Concept »

Amiibo is Nintendo's NFC figurine and card program that works across multiple games. Amiibo work natively with the Nintendo Wii U via the NFC reader in the Wii U GamePad and the New Nintendo 3DS. In 2015, Nintendo will release an accessory for the original Nintendo 3DS that lets players use Amiibo on it as well.

    Short summary describing this concept.

    Overview

    Super Smash Bros. amiibo
    Super Smash Bros. amiibo

Amiibo is Nintendo's line of NFC figurines and cards for use with compatible games. Similar to previous lines produced by other companies such as Skylanders or Disney Infinity, players can transfer data to and from the figurines and cards via a communication chip in the Nintendo Wii U GamePad, Switch Joycon Controller, New Nintendo 3DS, or Nintendo 3DS NFC reader.

The first game compatible with Amiibo is Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The Nintendo 3DS version of the game received a patch enabling support later in 2015. The previously released Mario Kart 8 received a future update that made it compatible with the figurines, as well.

Amiibo figures retailed for $12.99 in the US starting November 21, 2014 when the first twelve figurines launched with the Super Smash Bros. line followed by another six starting December 10, 2014. In Europe, amiibo launched on November 28, 2014 with the second wave following on December 19, whereas Australia and New Zealand got the first wave on November 28, 2014 and the second wave on December 12.

In Japan, both waves launched simultaneously on December 6, 2014. The third wave was split in two parts in Europe on January 23 and February 20, 2015 while the complete third wave (made up of Europe's wave 3 and 4) launched January 29, 2015 in Australia and New Zealand and in irregular piecemeal intervals throughout January and February across North America. Wave 5 arrived in Europe on April 24, 2015 and sometime in Spring in North America.

In October 2015, an accessory for Nintendo 3DS will be released to allow amiibo compatibility with titles released for the handheld. The upcoming New Nintendo 3DS/XL features built-in NFC support and thus will not require the accessory to support Amiibo.

    Amiibo Series

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS

These figures are modeled after their respective characters' artwork from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/Nintendo 3DS. An E3 2014 interview with Nintendo senior manager Shinya Takahashi confirmed that the games' full character roster is planned to be eventually released as Amiibo figures.

The third wave of Super Smash Bros. figures includes the first pair of guest character Amiibo: Sonic and Mega Man.

The third guest character, Pac-Man, was released with wave four.

    Super Mario

The second announced line of Amiibo features popular characters from the Mario series. With the exception of Toad, most of these characters had already appeared as Amiibo in the Super Smash Bros. series. Re-issued characters function identically to their original versions for gameplay purposes.

    Example Amiibo Card

The first amiibo series released in card form. 400 cards plus 5 promotional cards (Chara Parfait Isabelle, Pikopuri KK Slider, Goldie, Rosie, and Stitches) were initially planned for this series. Card packs contain 3 cards from their respective series with one card guaranteed to be a special amiibo card. Special "rare" cards differ from regular by having a shiny foil look as is often the case in other collectible cards games such as Pokemon.

The card also contains some information about the particular card:

    • The top left animal head symbol indicates the animal's species.
    • The top right number is the particular card number.
    • The second row, top left dice symbol is a dice number used in Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival.
    • The second row, top right rock-paper-scissors symbol is a dice number used in Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival.
    • The date below the character's name is the characters birthday.
    • The symbol next to the birthday date is the character's zodiac sign.
