Quick Time Event discussion *PRESS A!, PRESS Y!, JIGGLE ANALOG!*
It depends on how they are implemented. If it is just a press x to not die, then I agree they are a waste of space. But if what has been shown on Heavy Rain where it's press X to fight, circle to hide and square to run or something along those lines then it starts to become a bit more interesting.
It's very easy to be lazy with QTEs, but if a creative effort is made they can be useful.
While I do agree they show a lack of innovation on the developers' part, I don't mind a game with QTEs if they're well implemented. For me, God of War is an example of a franchise that does QTEs well by mixing them up with the standard frenetic combat and (I think this next point is key) doesn't take you out of the action. The QTEs are seamlessly integrated into the combat system and as a result don't feel as intrusive as QTEs in cutscenes. Games like Resident Evil 4 and Tomb Raider: Legend incorporate unnecessary QTEs into the cutscenes and that pisses me off.
I hate it when they come out of nowhere just after you've sat back and relaxed a la Resident Evil 4.
