Is fanning your 360 a good idea?

i have been a bit worried about my xbox RRoD'ing since im on my third one, so I've been putting a fan behind my 360 so that it cools it off.

i just don't know if this is ok or not. i think it cools it off, but it might just be pushing the hot air the 360 is releasing back inside.

what should i do? It froze on my last night and im getting worried.

Try to play only a couple hours at a time, I go on gaming marathons but I'm sure you can try to break up gaming sessions. My idea is to just make sure the console has proper air flow, and if it is a bit hot in the locations of the Xbox 360 (as in room temperature) then just cool the room off with a fan. I would never directly put additional air flow of any type right near the vents. Who knows what dust could do if you disturb it.

TLDR: Proper ventilation, take caution when applying any methods of cooling.

Mine has only died once even though I play a ton. Just keep cautious, there's not much you can do about it and never use an intercooler. All you need is a bit of luck. Unfortunately.

A fan facing the console would get it more hot right? I am thinking to put the back of the fan facing the console would vent hot air away from the console thus helping it to keep cooler? Or doesn't it work that way.

I'm still on my first for like 2 years now. Done 12 hour sessions very often too and all seems intact.

That probably won't help much, because you're blowing dust/hot air back into the case.

I have a miniature fan that I put on the left side of my 360 (if it is standing vertically); this blows cool air directly on the plastic side panel closest to the motherboard. I don't know if that technique has anything to do with it, but I've had the same 360 since launch.

Intercoolers are horrible. They actually instigate a red ring more than help protect against it. That said, an outside fan wouldn't hurt. It would help disperse the heat that builds up from the beast of the machine.

If anything, I heard that actually helps the 360 coll itself off, however, you shouldn't do that everytime as sometimes it can affect the 360.

I usually put it near it to suck the hot air the 360 emits away... not sure about having it blown at it though...

I have heard bad things about attaching those cooling fans to the console. I don't see a problem with putting a fan behind it. I limit my gaming time on it, so it doesn't get to hot with each session.

i think the problem is that it is too hot in my room. i'm on the second floor, and don't have air conditioning. Opening my window does nothing, and the fan doesn't do much....

god sometimes i wish i had never bought the damn thing....it's like you have to nurture it.

When it starts to get very hot stop playing and give the 360 a break, after the fall update you can just rip the games to your hdd and then your 360 wont get nearly as hot.

I used to put my fan on it from a metre away. Just by feeling it i could tell it was keeping it cooler.

I don't know if placing a fan facing your 360 is a good idea, you should check if your 360 feels any less hot.

Just to let everyone know, I don't use the intercooler. It's just a regular fan, and I set it up so that it blows onto the back of the X360. I still don't know if I should do this though..

I'm pretty sure the hot air being blown out of the back of the 360 won't like mingling with the cool air being blown in from your fan. That's kind of how tornadoes start (not that one could possibly form back there...but you get the idea).

Well, then play for a little while(like 2 hours), then let it rest for 1 1/2. A fan would be ok, but it just might blow hot wind at it.

Not really going to help. If you get RRoD, you get it, if you don't, you don't. I play for more than just a couple hours, I play for hours and hours and hours in a row. If I get RRoD'd, it isn't because of that otherwsie it would have happened by now
