    Overview

OlliOlli is a 2D side-scrolling skateboarding game initially developed by Roll7 for the PlayStation Vita. The game was later released released for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 and is featured as part of the Cross Buy promotion. The game was also later released via Steam for PC, Mac, and Linux on July 23, 2014. Curve Studios later ported the game to Nintendo 3DS, Wii U and Xbox One for release in March 2015.

The game features 50 levels, 5 different gameplay modes including Career Mode, 5 different environments, over a 100 different tricks and grinds, and many unlocks and challenges including the "Daily Grind" in which players get to practice a seeded run as many times as they like before attempting to get the highest score on it to top global leader-boards.

A sequel to the game OlliOlli 2: Welcome to OlliWood was announced in September 2014 for the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4, and was released alongside the Xbox One, 3DS and Wii U release of the original game in March 2015

    Gameplay

Olliolli's gameplay draws influence from several other games based on skateboarding. It's control scheme is similar to that of EA's Skate series in which tricks are performed by rotating analogue sticks in various ways. To complete a trick and finish it perfectly in order to achieve a higher score and keep momentum going a button must be pressed at a precise time before landing, similar to Thrasher Presents: Skate and Destroy. Tricks can be modified by use of additional buttons such as using shoulder buttons to rotate. The main aim of the game's campaign mode is to beat set goals in each level. Goals include obtaining high scores, collecting items and performing specific tricks. These goals are very similar to the goals set out in the Tony Hawk games.

    Development

The game was orignally being developed as an iOS game but when Roll7 developer John Ribbins ran into Velocity developer James Marsden (of FuturLab) who was currently in the process of bringing the shooter to the PlayStation Vita. Shortly after their conversation Ribbins felt that the physical inputs of the Vita was more suited to the twitch based title and sent an email to Sony's Shahid Ahmad to make arrangements for creating the title for the Vita rather than iOS.

With the additional controls that came with developing the game for the Vita several additions were made to the gameplay including the perfect landing system, as the game originally ended if players had a sloppy landing, as well as the unlockable 'RAD' game mode, which is unlocked once players have perfected all of the games challenges and allows the player to play the game as originally intended.

A final alteration made to the game which saw its release date pushed back several months from December 2013 (the originally intended release date) was the correction of 'Daily Grind' mode. The bug found within the mode meant players could submit their scores multiple rather than the intended 'one life run'.
