Traditionally a box carried by Pandora, the first woman, created by the gods. She was given the box and ordered by Zeus to keep it closed. Unfortunately she was also given the gift of curiosity and eventually opened it. This unleashed evils, disease, labor and other things humanity had not yet experienced including hope. Hope is said to have been at the bottom of the box. She had not intended to open it as an act of malice and had only opened it out of curiosity. She closed it immediately after opening it.
