Sega is a long-running Japanese company responsible for arcade hits like Space Harrier, home consoles like the Dreamcast, and franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog.
SEGA = still useless.
After the piss-poor marketing effort put behind Alpha Protocol, nothing has changed at SEGA. There is still no news about Aliens: Colonial Marines.
Apparently Gearbox is still working on the game, but now Duke Nukem takes priority. Seriously, Duke Nukem gets re-announced this year and there's already a life-size Duke poster standee thing like eight blocks from my house. Nice job SEGA, but what the hell is going on with ACM?
What is the point of you, SEGA? What purpose do you serve? it is becoming oh so clear you are nothing more than an empty vessel with no emotions or regard for anyone except pumping out totally crap Sonic games year after year like some kind of sludge hose regardless of the entire population of the earth decrying their quality.
There's only two outcomes I see happening:
1. ACM is released suddenly and is tragically medicore. The rushed multiplayer mode is totally broken.
2. ACM is quietly cancelled.
Hey SEGA, prove me wrong. I dare you.
" SEGA made Sonic 2 and Condemned, this is awesome, nothing else matters. "Fixed that.
Edit - Condemned was not a good game.
I just read some lenghty posts at sonicretro.com about some kind of "serious" fan-feedback-meeting that took place at SEGA America and it's pretty telling what people describe. This company is in the gutter and they quite frankly don't know what they're doing.
I just hope they don't harass Gearbox as much so Colonial Marines has a chance to become a good game. Other than that, I don't expect anything worthwhile from that company over the next decade or so.
I'm just glad that Gearbox is going strong. That's literally the only factor that gives me hope for ACM.
Other reasons why SEGA is a useless publisher...
1. Yakuza 3 missing a ton of content... Why? Because it was culturally alienating and hard to localize. Well, that's what publishers do SEGA! The whole bit about 'localization' is to adapt content to fit it's audience, not to remove it entirely.
2. Bringing Resonance of Fate AND Yakuza 3 out on the month Final Fantasy XIII hits the stores. Smart move throwing your big releases against an insanely popular franchise... Considering you don't even try to hype up your games.
3. Sonic in general.
4. Thanks for the super awesome Bayonetta port job to the PS3.
" @nintendoeats: You are the second person to do that tonight. Fuck you. Seriously. Edit - Condemned was not a good game. "Fair enough to the first point, hell no to the second. Condemned had atmosphere and creative game mechanics in spades. Aside form the crappy CSI stuff it was great.
Actually, Valkyria Chronicles was pretty great too. Basically, Sega seems to have one or two good games a year. Then they produce gigantic piles of shit.
" I feel like Aliens CM being nebulous is Gearbox's fault. But Sega doesn't know how to sell things, this is widely recognized. "I always feel bad for the developers who somehow got stuck with such a bad publisher.
" SEGA made the Dreamcast, this is awesome, nothing else matters. "That was 11 years ago. What have they done since then?
@MooseyMcMan: Not a lot, doesn't mean they aren't awesome for releasing the Dreamcast though.
" @Mrskidders said:The bigger problem is that they take no effort to sell the good games at all. And then turn around to hype another bad Sonic game." @nintendoeats: You are the second person to do that tonight. Fuck you. Seriously. Edit - Condemned was not a good game. "Fair enough to the first point, hell no to the second. Condemned had atmosphere and creative game mechanics in spades. Aside form the crappy CSI stuff it was great. " Don't forget Vanquish. That game should have sold like crazy. "Why? It's not very mainstream and I guess that it didn't have a huge marketing budget.
Sega isn't a very good publisher. The difference between the dreamcast era and now is that all the good people have left for brighter pastures, no doubt leaving all the people who thought of stuff like the 32X.
Sega will never die because they have a hardcore furry following that keeps them afloat as long as they shit out at least one Sonic game a year regardless of quality.
What's incredible to me is how often it seems they don't like to earn money. A decent well-designed well-marketed tactical FPS set in the Aliens universe would sell by the assload. But apparently SEGA's attitude is:
"Does it have Sonic in it?"
"Uh...no."
"Get out of my office."
I remember when it was cool to like Sega. It made you feel so much older. Their commercials also had way more leather jackets than Nintendo ever did.
Poor Sega. Microsoft should just buy them out or something. If my history knowledge serves me correctly, didn't Microsoft offer to buy Sega out back when the Saturn was taking a shit on itself? Something like that. Either way Sega always kind of sucked ass when it came to marketing, and maybe an added source of cash flow would get some of their games out there. Vanquish was a missed opportunity.
" Sega isn't a very good publisher. The difference between the dreamcast era and now is that all the good people have left for brighter pastures, no doubt leaving all the people who thought of stuff like the 32X. "This. Also the Dreamcast was not a very commercially successful console.
I know that this year the only thing that Sega has done a good job on was Bayonetta amid all the other average or less games they've put out. Some kind of strange miracle there & glad that magic that made Bayonetta good wasn't stuffed into some other average/Sonic game. It seems that they really drop the ball when it comes to publicity/press on the games hoping that maybe word of mouth would be it on selling their stuff.
Edit:
After seeing the earlier postings on this, decided to go tot he Sega site to look at the fan fic which to me just seems like a major disappointing way of how someone should spend thier time. Even more so for it to appear on the publisher's website forums so I'm guessing that there's people at Sega who regularly contribute to it, which isn't helping matters any.
Sega is by far, the weirdest of companies. When they were at their best, they gave Nintendo a run for their money. At their worst, they produced stuff like Sonic 2006; that's so much wasted potential.
They are weird in the sense they are never consistently good or bad. I would not call them useless though, whether you like it or not they are still relevant in big ways.
" 2006's Sonic the Hedgehog was pure gold and the fans want more of it, nothing else. "@C2C said:

Also, I think this nails every Sonic fan, because none of them seem to agree which Sonic games are actually good. :)
" @MooseyMcMan said:Really? I thought Vanquish was about as mainstream as you could get without being Gears/Halo/Call of Duty." Don't forget Vanquish. That game should have sold like crazy. "Why? It's not very mainstream and I guess that it didn't have a huge marketing budget. "
Power armor? Check. Shooting shit? Check. Shooting shit from behind cover? Check. HUGE FUCKING EXPLOSIONS? Check. Ridiculously over-the-top representation of military force? You better believe it.
" @Landon: Sonic Fan Fic...what the hell... "I don't mind fan fiction in and of itself. There are some rather talented writers out there, and it is an outlet for practicing the art of creative writing. But the average fan fiction created by the Sonic fanbase is utterly terrifying.
