I love Punch-Out and I like this series but I kind of have the opposite feeling Dan has with speed running it. Seeing the game boiled down to exploitable responses from the AI just doesn't sit right with me.

I'm 100% with you, going from "Beat Tyson any way you can" to "do these exact steps" just feels sterile. I was kinda hoping Grubb would set his own time with his own techniques, then learn the speedrun strats, but I think that's just a problem I have watching speedruns in-general.

They're not really playing the game, they're playing the tech.

@undeadpool: I disagree! I'm loving this series because it digs into what makes the game and the "tech" synonymous. Playing the tech is playing the game. That's what speed running is, and I find it fascinating to see the process of Dan helping Jeff Grubb unfold that in his play style.

Loving this. Started playing it seriously because of this, prior I've only ever mashed buttons for a bit and would call it quits.

I see what you're saying, and it's one reason I've never really "gotten into" watching speedruns, but it's the last sentence I take exception with: because it feels like there IS no "Jeff Grubb's play style," because there's only one play style, and it's the "correct" or "canon" one.

Might just be that this series isn't for me, and that's entirely acceptable at the end of the day.
