Not long ago, Bakalar complained that Nintendo needed to make a sequel to Wii Sports and then Nintendo announces Nintendo Switch Sports. Today Bakalar complains about DST and how we should just not “fall back” and then the US Senate unanimously approves a bill to make DST the permanent time. This man’s words have power! 😲

I actually finished Elden Ring using the Icerind Hatchet which is what both Jeff's were talking about with the speed runners using that weapon in the %Any speed runs. Yeah, it can sweep through multiple enemies and do heavy damage to bosses. However, the game adapts if you over use it. Enemies start getting smarter about dodging the ice splash and some with the big long weapons like the bosses will just rush you while in stomp animation. So you have to actually well time when to use it effectively.

Edit: And Sega Channel was awesome. Such great memories.

Another Japanese group that has tried to police things similarly, especially on Twitter: the J-League, Japan's top soccer league. Guess who really doesn't care to follow those warnings? Soccer fans on Twitter!

Here are my favourite lines from the Wikipedia entry for Daylight Saving Time. It's a real journey.

  • The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first proposed in 1784 by... Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter... Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize candle usage and calculated considerable savings.
  • In 1895... George Hudson proposed the idea of changing clocks by two hours every spring... as he wanted to have more daylight hours to devote to collecting and examining insects.
  • In 1907... William Willett presented the idea as a way to save energy. After some serious consideration, it was not implemented
  • Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada, was the first city in the world to enact DST, on July 1, 1908. :'(

I live in Arizona where we collectively say "Fuck daylight saving." I work nights and during the winter I wake up in the evening to get ready for work under the cover of darkness and when I get off work in the morning to drive home it's still dark, and when I make it home it is, again, still dark. I fucking love it and would have it year round but I suppose that that is the sort of thing that daylight saving is supposed to prevent.

Will y'all discuss the Sunshine Protection Act passing in the Senate next week? Get hyped for November 2023.

[edit] Oh! I got halfway through the pod and came across Bakalar referencing this. For some reason I was a day ahead, thought this all happened a day after this recorded this.

Another perspective on the Sega Channel. As someone younger around 9-10 years old at the time, the Sega Channel was awesome. Nobody had the internet yet so this was very foreign and seemed super high tech. My friend got the Sega Channel around then and we were both blown away by it. Rental stores only had so much stock and they would rarely get anything new or different in so this was like the first online rental store to us where we could try different Genesis games. We played it until it discontinued down to the last day.

Jess really hit the nail on the head about Elden Ring. Souls gameplay is something I can take or leave. But a game that actually gives you freedom to explore at your own pace, in your own direction, AND constantly rewards your curiosity with something new and exciting... that's almost priceless. That's why I loved BotW, and it's also why I now love Elden Ring. Most AAA games are just... roller coasters. They're fun, but it's a guided, predetermined experience. You know what you're getting, and you enjoy it, but you don't really connect with the experience. When it's over, it's over. But games that make you feel like an agent of your own experience, those are the ones that stick with you. And so many games are just terrified to do that.

The time change sucks, but it's never been that big of a deal to me. Hopefully that bill goes through so we never have to think about it again, nor hear people complain about it twice a year. Also, the first time we pass a time change that doesn't happen, it will probably be funny to see the people who didn't get the memo and are wondering what is happening.

As for "who would skip ahead in chapters?" question Jess asked - Goodreads has an ask a question about a book feature, where you can ask things about a particular book and other users will provide answers. (Usually it's stuff like "is this ok for kids?") I've seen on multiple books where the book in question is a sequel or somewhere in a series that is not the first book, and there's people asking if they can just jump in at that book instead of starting at the beginning. I have no idea why the hell you'd bother reading something if you're going to skip over any amount of it, but it's apparently something that some people want to do.

Elden Ring is a textbook example of game bloat, to me. Every time I enter a legacy dungeon I am reminded of how much better this content is by a huge margin. Everything in it is unique and meticulously planned out and placed. Hidden nooks, enemy compositions and placement, fantastic level design all capped with incredible boss battles. They truly are a master of dungeon design over at From but then I enter this drab and uninteresting open world where I run around for 10 hours, looking for the interesting bits which never really show up.

The ruins all look the same, the dungeons all pull from the same resources and end with really boring bosses that aren't all that interesting to fight (and have fought multiple times before) - they're essentially Bloodborne's chalice dungeons but integrated into the game a little bit better. You occasionally come across something neat but I don't think it really justifies the open world at all. The Underground, on the other hand, was what the overworld should have been. It was the right size and density filled with interesting stuff to see and do. Half the stuff is so esoteric that I have to look up a wiki on where to find a NPC I talked to 75 hours ago ended up because they gave me no hint as to where they were going and if they did... it was 75 hours ago.

I love the game. I have a 105 hours (yay/boo unemployment) and not even to the end yet, which is double what I finished Forbidden West at. But yeah, I'd love for developers to trust their players more but Elden Ring is so far in the other direction.

Controller pricing has made me feel insane. Seeing so many people accept that the solution to the awful Dualsense battery life is buying a second controller, and cycling them, feels like it overlooks just how absurd the price issue is there.

Just lemme use rechargeable AA's

@jimbot: I haven't been doing a whole lot of side content but I've found the same prefab dungeon room where there's an imp in the middle of the room and another imp jumps at you from the right side like 3 times now. Definitely makes it feel like filler.

@dijidiji: You discovered one of the catacomb dungeons Jess was talking about. There are gargoyle statues spread across the world and if you light the candle its holding, it will point you to one of them. Killing the bosses there can give you all kinds of awards like summons, weapons, etc. But like Jess said, you can complete the catacomb and receive something useless depending on your build, unless you respec.

@av_gamer: Yeah I just think they're rubbish. I skip most of them unless the wiki points out it has something notable in it. Elden Ring's exploration is at it's best for me when I'm just coming across weird stuff, like the first time I fought a troll knight, or came across a tower that almost instantly killed me, even non-interactive stuff like finding strange giant faces. Finding another stitched together dungeon not so much. That's the same reason I disliked Breath of the Wild where the dungeons felt like chores.

I agree with @jimbot that the underground strikes the right balance between feeling open and being dense with stuff. It's gorgeous and is my favourite area in the game, though Raya Lucaria and Leyndell are up there too.

Solution for the issue of Daylight Saving time re: darkness sooner: change 8-hour workdays to 6-hour workdays. DST is a ploy from capitalism to stop us from demanding a better society.
