Albummer! 44: The Mission Impossible 2 Soundtrack

Today on Albummer! we're talking music from and inspired by Mission Impossible 2. It's a dozen nu-metal songs that weren't in the movie and a Tori Amos bop for good measure. WTF?

The crew behind Two Minutes to Late Night are here to re-review some of the most critically reviled albums out there!

"I Disappear" was the first Metallica song I ever remember hearing and I'll always have a soft spot for it as my introduction to them, even if it's far from their best work.

Also I rewatched all the Mission: Impossible films early in the pandemic and II improved the most for me (in that it went from being a movie I remembered being bad to being pretty good) while III went down a lot. I find it very hard to dislike John Woo's bombast.

(Listening to this now)

This is the first album on Albummer that I have actually owned.

I'm an idiot that genuinely liked that Buckcherry song and would probably still fight for it.

Ah yes, the Limp Bizkit M:I theme, which my local station used as a traffic report backdrop for... I guess decades now.

I too had the 1998 Godzilla soundtrack. They say "fuck" in the Rage Against the Machine song ("Godzilla, pure motherfuckin' filler," wasn't smart enough to understand the irony at the time) so I brought it to school and played it for my friends on my discman. Then someone snitched on me and I got in trouble and I cried.

First five tracks on that album, which for some reason I remember:

  1. The Wallflowers cover of Heroes
  2. The Diddy song that samples Kashmir
  3. A Jamiroquai song
  4. The Rage Against the Machine song
  5. A Ben Folds Five song

Album sequencing is an art.

The Space Jam soundtrack was the first cd I ever bought for my self and it was basically the whole reason I fell in love with hip-hop/rap as a kid. Hit em High, way too good and hits way too hard for a kids movie lol

Actually, now thinking about it, I feel like movie soundtracks in general were a continuous push in my musical tastes. I feel like I could point to multiple movies around the time that put me on Chris Cornell/Soundgarden/Audioslave. Thinking like Collateral with the Audioslave song. Or with Garden State and discrovering stuff like The Shins and Death Cab.

Movies and TV have driven most of my music discovery before streaming music.

In hindsight that Mission Impossible game was indeed very bad. That didn't stop me from renting it constantly when it first came out though!

The Mission Impossible 3 Kanye song is amazing. It’s like a amalgamation of his production style of all his college albums.

I don't know why, but the way you told this story was really engaging to me, thanks for sharing.
I hope you aren't crying anymore

Man, i bought so many Soundtracks at that time. I really liked this one, "Take a look around" is to this day my favorite Limp Bizkit song. Rob Zombie and Metallica were great on this, as well. Also i found Tori Amos trough this, so my money was well spent.

If you´re looking for another Soundtrack, you should check out Arnold Schwarzeneggers´ Masterpiece "End Of Days" from 1999. The weird ass Guns N Roses Song "Oh My God" alone would be worth it. It´s so weird that this is their only new song between 1993 and 2008.

The Mortal Kombat soundtrack is ..diverse, but it's fantastic.

Also, I think their might be a through-line for these types of soundtracks back to the Less Than Zero soundtrack (also diverse and great) which has also been mentioned on this podcast (for the weird Danzig big-band style song).

On the "using one movie's soundtrack in another movie's trailer" tangent, as a Stargate SG-1 fan in the late 90's, I certainly recognized MANY movie trailers that used the SG-1 theme as their general "sweeping dramatic adventure" mood piece.

I watched all the MI movies for the first time recently, 2 wasn't as bad as I'd heard, except for the terrible music. 3 wasn't nearly as good as I'd heard.

Hah, so funny when you're making an opinion and you're pretty confident that everyone will agree that X is better than Y, and then people heavily disagree with you and you're like WOAH... your brain is so different from mine.

I also hope that the Diffuser dude randomly stumbles upon a bunch of people listening to his song and saying how they were ahead of their time.
