A few years ago my ex girlfriend from Mississippi who was a completely normal 27 year old who loved partying and riding horses somehow came across this game on my PS 3 and played through the entire thing in one afternoon. It blew my mind because she called the controller a remote and didn't even know how to turn the Playstation off but somehow I came home and she had finished the entire campaign and told me not to get mad at her for "beating that robot game". I tried to get her into other games but nope the only game she ever played in a few years of dating was Vanquish. She also loved to watch me play God Hand but couldn't get into it.

I think I need to play this again (I quit about halfway through) after watching Ben play this it looks really awesome as I remember it being. They should make a game around the wise cracking guy in charge seems like a missed opportunity.

God dammit, I love Vanquish. For people wondering what makes it special, I just call it a character action shooter. Super skill-based action, crazy set pieces, pattern-based bosses, and a hefty dose of style.

i'd say the ratio of good ports to bad on PC in recent years has been nicely high; it's just people make such a goddamn huge stink about the few that are bad.

e: with how much ends up on pc nowadays "port" doesn't even seem like the correct word to use for them, in a way.

I really wanted to like the game, but I felt like it never asked me to use the movement options.

Man, I don't remember what happens to Sam and such at the end but I do remember what happens to the president though.

Amazing game... don't want to wait until I get my black Friday PC though so may have to dust off my PS3!

seeing people play this game with mouse and keyboard is making me lose my grip on reality.

I think Vanquish' biggest flaw is that it buries the game it actually is so deep most people never find it. I think I might have a dig on youtube to see if anyone has made some more advanced tutorials as I think that's what needed to explain it which is a shame.

A nice addition for this version would have been a few example videos of how to use the more advanced stuff just to show new players it's in there.

@steveurkel: I had a very similar thing happen with an ex and God War 2 of all games. Also knew nothing of games or how the console even worked but could not put it down.

I never knew how much this game resembled Metal Gear Rising.

Max Payne 3 was great. Ryan liked it. I will take any opportunity to say how great that game is.

I just can't get into this game now that I've finally played it on PC. I feel kinda bad about it but you know, whatever I guess.

Also I totally mixed up this game and Binary Domain for YEARS.

vanquish was and is a very succinct and clever play on the two majorly major action games before it.

blown away that this was not pointed out during or since its passing of time.

more importantly, platinum is very, very lookahead.. or at least aheadofhead... in terms of their game outlook/output.

@alistercat: I will always mention how it's one of the best written stories about personal retribution that I've had a chance to play. Also stylish as all hell.

Wait, so they were all raving about this game but none of them really played it past Act I? Did I miss something?

When that circle gauge pops up, is there no way to cancel out of the bullet time before you overheat? Seems like he is constantly overheating but I don't know how the mechanics work.

I think i own this game on 360, i remember not liking the demo all that much then getting it years later and thinking it was cool and never playing it much. May have borrowed it from somebody though lol.

Never played Vanquish when it came out, but... I think I need to play this.

I always felt like that escort mission in Vanquish is a little too close to the one in Gear 2 . They are both escort missions in dark tunnels with the truck lighting the way and little creatures that explode.

@aziridine: There is a way to cancel it by dodging, and that's something you should totally do unless you're in a pinch and need the extra time in slow-mo. It's interesting Ben never at least seemed to notice, but overheating causes you to recharge way slower.

I played this back in the day on consoles, but for some reason watching this gave me motion sickness. This is the first time that's ever happened. I think it's because of how fast Ben's camera was set.

Heads up, y'all! It seems like there's a pretty serious bug in this version of the game that causes the damage you take to be tied to the framerate. This means that the higher your framerate, the more damage you're taking.

"I've tested this multiple times using the AR mode tutorial (the bit where enemies shoot at you a bunch in order to demonstrate auto AR) and you take much more damage when playing at higher framerates. If you lock the framerate to 30FPS AR mode will activate after 6-7 seconds of taking enemy fire but if you're playing at a much higher framerate, like 144FPS, it will activate in just 1-2 seconds."

What's especially weird is that the PC port of Valkyria Chronicles suffered from a similar problem (see below, the game is running at 60 fps on the left, 30 on the right) and Little Stone Software is the company behind both ports. Hopefully this'll get fixed soon.

I love this game, but it's a MUCH easier sell at $20 than the original $60 considering how short it is.

And considering the boss variety (as in lack of) was a bit disappointing since this came out post-Bayonetta from the same devs.

I think this game looks fine, but I think the intervening years have done little more than hype what is a pretty good game with somewhat dated slow-motion mechanics. I've actually wanted to play this for a while, but that was before it was hyped as apparently the greatest shooter ever made, which is odd, because the response to this game initially was pretty lukewarm, if pretty positive among certain sets.

I can't believe this is a Shinji Mikami game by Platinum. Looks like the most generic dudebro shooter imaginable.

I expect this to how witch-time in 2017. that'd be sick.

@cornbredx: Unless they wrote a book that continues the story beyond the ending, it doesn't end like that. Though it's still an ending that I feel like closes the book on Max's life.

Also the dialog in Vanquish is so bad!

DmC is cool and all, but you know what's great? DMC 3. It got an 8.6 from one Greg Kasavin. Quote: "...Devil May Cry 3 is one of the best PlayStation 2 action adventure games since the original."

iron man armor with rocket knees is generic now
