This was one of the first PS1 games I saw when I was a kid. It blew my mind.

Who's not into the gameplay portion of the show? Time to throw down!

Also it's interesting to see someone say how this game hasn't aged very well, but it's SO EXPENSIVE on the after market. Even before this boom.

Tomba has got to be one of my favorite games on PS1. Great pick, Jan.

Immediately knew what it was from the thumbnail. I played the demo as a kid and loved it. I'll probably play it around here as an adult at some point.

Man, if I were to pick a game for my personal Guilty Treasure, it would be one of the Tomba games. I think I found the original Tomba on a Playstation Underground demo disc. I loved the random quests and exploration puzzles, and it might have been my first Metroidvania? Awesome game, awesome pick.

Also worth mentioning is Tomba's creator having previously worked on some big games for Capcom.

Let's talk at how hilariously hard the mine cart sections of this game is. Theyre really stupid hard!

Fun fact: if you have a PS3 or Vita laying around, you can buy this game digitally. Probably much cheaper than that complete copy Danny got!

I was not a big fan of the 3D or attempt at it, but I really really liked this series. I own Tomba 1 for the PS1 (my first game) and tomba 2 for the PSP (PS classics)

TOMBA IS BACK BABY @jeffgrubb

I don't own a PS5 cause of shortage but I would buy from a scalper IF they remade this game. What fresh new platformer does Ps5 have anyway? Ratchet has platforming but it's not as cool as my guy Tomba

The first one looks great with 2D and 3D, but I hate the 3D art here.

I've always thought the Tombi games were like the spiritual sequel to the wonderboy games. I'm surprised it didn't come up but SWERY worked on this!

Jan talking about his upbringing with his cousins and how they relate to each other is such a relatable thing between myself and my own family.

It's stuff like this that makes me think that I really missed out by not having a PS1 back in the day. I opted for the N64 that had its share of lovable trash, but the sheer volume of trash that came out for the PS1 is in another league.

I think the game from this era I would include in a feature like this would be Hybrid Heaven. It's just one of these games that was trying something very new and unique that just was ahead of its time. If it came out now with more modern controls it would work a lot better.

Upon reflection I finally realized what my choice for a game for this series would be.

If I go for "Game I most loved/was influenced by but am still to this day embarassed about", I'd go with Lunar 2. Which, to be fair, the embarrassment is much more because of a certain song from the first game I could still sing by heart (and likely will go do after I write this, lord i never grow up) but the 2nd really stands out to me because its story (cliche though it was) and anime-style hit then young me right in the "this is the greatest game I've ever played".

I 100% credit Lunar 2 with being the major source of cementing my personal long standing tradition of "Story over gameplay" and "Games are meant to be pleasing escapist fantasy" but most of all "The best stories have happy endings." Or the Romance genres "No matter the drama and story, I want my happily ever after ending please and thank you!" view-point.

No I don't care if it's silly, or half the reason young me liked that games final/true ending is because there was a naked(well, PG-13 levels) anime girl in it. I still, right this moment, can hear the last line in that game and swell up with joy. (It's "Hiro!" for anyone wanting more reason to mock me even).

Ok so, personal rant aside. This series is fantastic. Looking forward to the next one.

Jan! You finally did it! I kept asking/pestering about Tomba! in live shows for a while. Don't want to say I was an influence but...maybe I will! I fucking love Tomba.

I actually bought and played the Tomba games from the PS Store about 6 months ago when Sony was threatening to take stuff down. They're certainly of an era, but I think they still hold up. I can definitely see these being a special gem for kids of the era too.
