Great work from Danny again and great pick by Jan. I never played Tomba 2, but I played the shit out of the demo for the first game back in the day (which was actually called Tombi in Australia/Europe)

Only 20 minutes is criminal.

This was a neat pick! Personally only ever played the demo of the first Tomba, which I did enjoy and which also got this piece of music stuck to my head ever since then.

Danny should just dip into Tomba! 1 the Original to see how different of a game it is, pretty wild.
in the vein of Tomba! i think my guilty treasure would be Brave Fencer Musashi, they occupy a similar space in my head

@thisismrle: I still liked the episode overall, but yeah, I feel like Danny didn’t come up with a lot to say about the game. Still appreciate the Jan interview, but there wasn’t even a throwaway 30-seconds of narration about the state of the developer/publisher/creatives when this game was released, or how Tomba 2 is viewed against Tomba 1, etc., other than Danny mentioning a few reviews at the time.

It didn’t feel as much like a retrospective on the game or Danny getting a glimpse into why Jan has nostalgia for it, and it read a bit more like Danny throwing his hands up and going “PS1 game design: hard to go back to!” Which is true, and maybe that’s just going to be how some Guilty Treasures go.

There's something adorable about Danny being angry at the concept of a 2.5d platformer.

@beggary: same here. Was expecting a bit of background on the developer but maybe the crew is spread too thin right now. I still enjoyed this very much.

Tomba 2 is just a 3D version of Tomba with the same mechanics and all of that. Danny should definitely check it out.

Also, I love that Danny thinks of Tomba as a child since I'm pretty sure he's at least a teen if not an adult.

Who's not into the gameplay portion of the show? Time to throw down!

100% agreed. The first episode of Guilty Treasures was great because Danny and Jeff were talking about stuff that happened later in the game.

Obviously it's not possible for Danny to finish each guilty treasure game, but I would like to see Danny get a bit further into each of them and have bits of footage of that in the episode.

Still, even with the format as it is now, this is probably my favorite of the new GB shows.

Definitely my favorite show on the site, I think we all love getting to know more about the crew ! Great to have Jan who's younger than the first participants, I feel like this generation is the one that many of us have grown up with. Thank Danny for the great research and editing !

not sure what i expected jan to pick but i'm not disappointed in the randomness of it . i can definitely get behind the reason for it being a treasure even if the gameplay might not hold up . .. speaking of gameplay .. ppl don't like the gameplay segments of this series? i thought that was half the draw was seeing stuff played n forming the opinion of it . don't get me wrong i can understand if its a longer game chopping bits up to give a clear picture but that was half the reason why i loved the first episode with jeff's guilty treasure, and it was still cool even tho rorie's is a racing game which imo would be inherently a bit less interesting to watch, i felt that was really disjointed n missing in this even if tiny snippets were there still. missing that aside it was cool to hear jan's memories of it even if it felt like a weaker episode otherwise... also i would totally watch jan randomly play this because why not ...just saying

That bit stood out to me too. I like seeing Danny learn how the game works and what's unique about it.

same , i feel it as definitely missing in this :/

@janman dude, this is one of my favorite games ever! all my friends meme on me because I listen to the music or reference some of the cool outfits or quests. The music for purified ranch and the continue screen music is so good. I played it on a demo disc once and I went and bought it as soon as I had the money for it from helping my mom clean houses.

Whoever convinced you not to show the gameplay exploration has sold you a bag of goods. Show it! Show it all!

Also relieved to see the cult status of the game addressed at the start, because there's quite some buzz behind the Tomba series that I'd think wouldn't apply to this series, but I did enjoy the framing as a formative experience. I can't imagine how much you paid for an original copy though. Quarterly budgets amirite?

Keep the gameplay bits. Good show <3

My first introduction to Tomba was the INCREDIBLY awkward AGDQ run of Tomba 2. ("I would really prefer that you be quiet") and its fascinated me ever since. Was pumped to hear Jan mention it.

Great series Danny! One of my favorite site features in a while.

Just want to add my two cents here and say I like the gameplay portions of this. Seeing Danny get into the game at first and then after He's been playing for a while is fun and helps me get a feel for these beauties I've never seen before.

Jan's always been excellent, but his choice of a Tomba! (Tombi!, PAL naming represent) game elevates him even further in my eyes. I've always been more of a Tomba! 1 guy, but I played this one in later years and it's also a great time. Strongly recommend going back to the more 2D original - now there's an Endurance Run I'd love to see!

Edit: The original game's music slaps so aggressively hard - see Bacchus Village and Village of All Beginnings.

Edit 2: This also blew my mind because I played 1 so young that I didn't even think of them as a Metroidvania, a genre I love... so much.

I always liked Tomba and Tomba 2 despite being bad at them. They had a fun vibe I digged and 2.5D is still a style of platforming I enjoy. Nice pick Jan, nice memories too.

I'm glad to see so much positivity toward Tomba in the comments. It's too bad Danny didn't seem to like it much.

It's not going to go down in any top 50 platformers of all time... maybe not even top 100.

Ouch. Well, it's in my top 50 anyway.

My bigger issue with this episode, though, is the lack of depth that Danny is know to go for. It's a short episode too, so it's not like there wasn't time for it. It's great to hear Jan's perspective on why he chose this game, but this series to me is also about Danny coming to learn about and hopefully appreciate these hidden treasures as well.

I never knew there was a sequel. Had I had a PlayStation back then instead of an N64, I probably would've rented this and enjoyed it.
