Quick Look: One Piece Odyssey

Because of all the side-eying of the character design of the women in the game, I want to share some cursed knowledge with Jan and Jeff: Oda, the mangaka, married a Nami cosplayer

never ggot into one piece cause the character designs , always heard good things tho. this looks fine for what it is , i'm not gonna lie tho i knew about that other open world game and i never even realized it came out, i expected that when i clicked on this , guess i'm 2-3 years late lol

I am a huge One Piece fan and I find it sad how mediocre One Piece games are. Well, at least I have the manga and anime.

I like One Piece, but I'll make no excuses for it. Completely understand anyone that is turned off by the art style or intimidated by the ridiculous length.

It looks like this game would be appealing to the fans, but my RPG days are behind me.

i'm a one piece fan and this just looks like the kinda game that for a heavy discount , if i just wanted to kill time while listening to music/podcasts it might be alright.

also it is a mistake to try to get into one piece through the anime IMHO. you can always read a manga faster than you can watch an anime adaptation of that same story. the anime reallllly stretches out some chapters and has filler arcs as well so it has pacing issues out the wazoo. if anyone wants to get into i say manga or bust tbh.

okay one extra thing: i get that one piece's artstyle can be offputting and that is totally fair but i will say i have yet to see a 3d rendering of Luffy that isn't freaky looking. he just does not translate to 3D.

@gendergenerator: I'll second the recommendation to read the manga instead of watching the anime. The filler episodes are very bad for the most part and as the series progresses it stretches out each episode to cover a chapter of manga at most. Read it at your own pace and enjoy!

God I wish their eyelids or pupils animated because I do NOT like the vibe the game's versions of these characters are giving me.

I've always felt the story structure of One Piece was reminiscent of a classic JRPG. The lone hero sets on a journey and acquires new members to his party, each with their own unique class/set of skills and tragic backstory. On the way, they get a ship and then get an even better and bigger ship, and bit by bit they slowly uncover the overworld they are exploring and all its mysteries.

So I'm glad that it clicked for someone and they decided to make a JRPG of the story but this isn't really what I wanted. This looks like a really surface-level, fanfic version of all the major story beats of the franchise. Once the manga is completed (wishful thinking I know) it would be cool if they turned the entire franchise into the ultimate JRPG that recapped the whole events. I know it's kind of an insane task to commit to and it would probably have to split apart into multiple games.

I don't know if it is the genre genre that is causing it, but everytime Jan says "cubes" it sounds like "pubes" to me, but hey, anime fall off.

YouTube has spammed the holy hell out of me with ads for this game despite my viewing habits containing few anime-related things. I'm curious to see if this game is worth the marketing blitz.

EDIT: This is a PS2 RPG-ass PS2 RPG (right down to the boot screen, apparently). It's not a good or bad thing. It just is.
