Overview
The Arena Football League, or AFL, is a professional American football league that began operation in 1987. Arena football differs from the standard rule format by limiting the playing field to fifty yards in length and eight players on offense and defense, as opposed to the standard hundred yard field and eleven-player formations. Considered a lower-tier of professional football, a few players, most notably quarterback Kurt Warner, have used the AFL as a springboard to earn positions on NFL rosters.
