A Universe of Mega Mans

Capcom crosses up its little blue guy with its fireball throwing guy and its heart-imprinted underwear guy.

"This game will break the mold and challenge the conventional wisdom of what a Mega Man game can be."

That's how Capcom's Keiji Inafune describes Mega Man Universe, which the company formally announced this morning. The rest of the release makes the game sound like a mix of new and old, almost like an updated take on the classic 2D Mega Man games. Capcom's also throwing around claims like "Capcom aims to deliver the most creative Mega Man experience yet."

Information provided to GameSpot by the game's publisher says that the game will feature a lot of crossovers with other Capcom products, allowing Mega Man to turn into Ryu and Arthur, among others.

Creativity seems like just the thing that the Mega Man franchise needs right now. After all, the biggest thing the series has going right now are a couple of downloadable, deliberately retro games. You can't coast on pure nostalgia forever, right? It sounds like we'll be hearing a bit more about Mega Man Universe from San Diego Comic-Con, which takes place next week. After having a horrible time with Mega Man 9--one that led to me completely skipping Mega Man 10--it'll be interesting to see how this ends up when it's eventually released as a downloadable game for Xbox 360 and PS3.
