Activision Reveals Apache: Air Assault For 360, PS3

Huey! ChinNOOK.

Today, Activision announced that players will be able to stop worrying and love the copter in Apache: Air Assault, a new "modern combat" helicopter simulator for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Developed by Russian developer Gaijin Entertainment, Apache: Air Assault will put players in the cockpit of various Apache birds as they take on missions that only a helicopter is equipped to carry out.

Of course, if you've ever played a helicopter game, you know that the missions a helicopter can carry out are

  1. Destroy other helicopters
  2. Blow up buildings
  3. Lift stuff up with that crane
  4. Hover
  5. Put out a fire (maybe?)

So, I imagine the game will mostly revolve around those objectives. Well, 80% of them.

== TEASER ==Activision's announcement also mentions that players will be able to select between "arcade" and "realistic" game modes, depending on how much helicopter you want to helicopter. Apache will also include standard online multiplayer modes. In addition to the online play, Apache will offer a neat wrinkle on the standard co-op gameplay formula; instead of two players in two helicopters, Apache's co-op mode will put both players in the same copter as pilot and co-pilot. Unfortunately, that co-op is local play only, so I hope you live close to friends who want to helicopter as much as you do.

As the Activision press release points out, there haven't been many recent releases dedicated to helicopter combat, regardless of technicality and strategy. Maybe Activision recognized that the positive reception to the helicopter combat sections of Call Of Duty: Black Ops could lead to a successful game devoted solely to helicopter-on-helicopter action. We'll see how many RPG hits it takes to bring you out of the sky (three!) when the game is released this fall.
