And Now, The 2014 Giant Bomb Readers' Games Of The Year

Science and magic merge to produce your games of 2014.

2014 was a banner year for orc-stabbing aficionados.
2014 was a banner year for orc-stabbing aficionados.

Giant Bomb recently conducted a incredibly rigorous scientific set of polling to determine our readers' games of the year for 2014. We opened up voting around January 1st so as to not overlap with the efforts of thatfrood, who has conducted a set of forum-focused polls over the last few years; you can find his poll's results for this year at this link. (For reference, the staff's top ten is at the bottom of this article.)

We thought it'd be interesting to create a profile list-based method of conducting these polls, as well, and sent out notifications to community members via Twitter and Facebook around the time that the polls went live. You can find more info on how this went down via my forum post over here. We'll take a closer look at getting something more elaborate done when the time comes next year!

Some quick facts before we begin:

  • We received a grand total of 1,462 lists, either fully filled with ten candidates, or only partially filled.
  • The number of votes cast totaled 12,679. (Again, some lists weren't fully populated, which is why this number isn't exactly 10x the number of lists.)
  • A grand total of 629 games received at least a single vote. Some of those games were not from 2014; automatically filtering out non-2014 games led to some oddities the last time we attempted something like this, so we let people vote on what they wanted and simply disqualified anything not from last year from appearing in the top ten. As it was, we didn't have to worry about it.

Top Ten Games (Total Votes)

Here's the top ten games by number of votes received, regardless of position in the top ten list. (I'll post the full spreadsheets in a forum thread in a bit if you data nerds want to see the complete lists.)

Game NameTotal Number of Votes
1. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor757
2. South Park: The Stick of Truth498
3. Dark Souls II462
4 Dragon Age: Inquisition443
5 Wolfenstein: The New Order437
6 Far Cry 4332
7 Mario Kart 8326
8 Bayonetta 2317
9 Transistor312
10 Super Smash Bros.308

Top Ten Games (Weighted Votes)

In this list, games are weighted by position in the list of the reader who voted for them. Votes are weighted with a value of (1/slot position), such that a first-place vote is worth a whole vote share, while a game ranked in tenth place would only receive a tenth of a whole vote for the purposes of this list.

Game NameWeighted Votes
1. Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor329.5308
2. Dragon Age: Inquisition228.4623
3. Dark Souls II200.9838
4. Bayonetta 2169.4146
5. South Park: The Stick of Truth166.0844
6. Wolfenstein: The New Order140.6332
7. Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft 102.5046
8. Super Smash Bros.102.0463
9. Far Cry 499.7698
10. Mario Kart 890.6307

It's interesting to compare and contrast with ThatFrood's weighted list. The top three games are unchanged; people sure did like Shadow of Mordor in 2014, including the Giant Bomb editors, who likewise voted it their game of the year. The big winner on our weighted list is Bayonetta 2, which jumps up four spots from its position on ThatFrood's community list; the biggest loser is Transistor, which drops out of the top ten games when you sort by vote weight. It's replaced by Hearthstone, which wasn't even in the top ten total vote-getters. Apparently enough people who did vote for it placed it high enough on their lists to bump it into the top ten games when sorted by weight.

For what it's worth, two games appeared on the staff list that didn't appear on either ThatFrood's top ten list or this weighted top ten list: Jazzpunk and Shovel Knight. Shovel Knight came in at position 12 on our weighted list; Jazzpunk ranked number 14.

Surprised to see South Park up so high, but I think it's well deserved; that game was pretty great. Shadow of Mordor on the other hand really just did nothing for me, and the nemesis system wasn't enough to save it from just being a different publisher's Ubisoft-esque open world game for me. Definitely not surprised to see that at number one though.

I really enjoyed Middle Earth, but I think it says a lot about this year to make it number 1 on this list as well.

Most competently made bland game wins.

Also @rorie there's another game that was on the Staff list but not the community ones. Call of Duty.

I'll assume FF14 was disqualified even though the PS4 version came out this year.. Otherwise it'd be at #1

Nice write up Rorie! So happy for Dark Souls 2, South Park and Bayonetta 2, my 3 favourite games of last year. I'm almost done with Mordor and I'm kind of underwhelmed by it, the combat isn't as good as the Arkham games and the Nemesis sytem isn't grabbing me like it did with other people, I don't really have any rivals and the names are kind of just blending together. :(

Not surprised to see Dark Souls 2 so high on the lists. I feel it might have made the GB list too if Patrick would have compared the quality of DS 2 to other games that came out in 2014 instead of just comparing it to Dark Souls and deciding it's not good enough. That's the impression I got from the GOTY podcasts.

Yay! Finally. Also, Shovel Knight was on ThatFrood's list. It was Number 7.

I wonder what caused Shovel Knight and Transistor to drop below 10.

i'm surprised HS makes a weighted list but not a regular one. I would have thought lots of people would have it but just as one of those time killer games.

Thanks, Rorie! And good job comparing it to ThatFrood's list, too. You guys did right by Jazzpunk, though. Hopefully more people will play it as a result.

@gamefreak9 You're right... but the more I thought about it the higher up the list I kept sliding it. It was a time filler for sure - but it filled a lot of my time. Consider Alex talking about how he played that game more than anything else this year. When it gets you, it really gets you.

I just don't get all the love for Mordor. One moderately cool gimick couldn't save the ugly environments, shitty story and recycled gameplay for me.

I feel like these maths needed pictures of mustachioed people in lab coats holding abacuses and test tube beakers and chinchillas and wrenches and other sciencey gear. Otherwise it just looks like witchcraft and we all know how I feel about witchcraft.

Both of these list would be great top tens. The second list would be almost identical to what I would come up with (minus Dark Souls 2).

Played Shadow of Mordor. Didn't like it. It's ugly, plotless and plays nowhere near as well as everyone's making out. Nemesis is smart, I get that, and the execution of the uruks is superb but for me it wasn't enough.

I was one of the people who put Transistor up top. The function system was brilliant and so simple it's amazing no one did it before.

That said, it would never have come top if 2014 hadn't been such a total shitshow. 2015, come at me bro!

Dragon Age: Inquisition takes a bit to get into, but it's been keeping me occupied like no other.

The warnings from GB have been helpful, in that I didn't stick around The Hinterlands too long and only went after events and quests I felt like doing.

I've found the environments impressively realized (at least graphically), and once you get going there are a lot of zones.

I really recommend playing it with a gamepad and installed to an SSD.

Also don't pick elfroot, like ever. Really any of the non-rare resources aren't worth wasting the tedious time/animation to harvest.

It's too late for that I'm afraid. If you play it now, with 2 GotY nods fresh in your brain, you're sure to be disappointed. Better to leave it to the aether. :P

Kidding aside, I really can't think of a game I had more fun with in 2014. After playing it on consoles(X1 if you're curious), I ended up getting a PC copy when I got a powerful new laptop for Christmas. So I've beaten it twice. Put in nearly 100 hours between the 2 different versions.
