Battlefield Returning to WWII In 1943

Finally, a new World War II-themed shooter we can get excited about.

I never thought I would get excited about another World War II first-person shooter in my lifetime, but that was before EA and DICE went and announced a new Battlefield game set in that time period. The year is 1943, the maps are three, and the platforms are...PC, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network?

Well, the scale of it might be a little smaller than what you would have expected, but this is certainly better than nothing. Especially since one of the three maps in '43 will be Wake Island, the map I spent probably 90% of my time on in the original Battlefield 1942. (And if it hadn't been for Battle of the Bulge, that number would have approached 100.) Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal are the other two maps.

Here's a trailer and a couple of screens depicting what we're in for. Downloadable or not, the game looks pretty damn slick. Basically like '42 with destructible trees. I'm onboard.

While we're on the subject, DICE also put out the first screen of Bad Company 2, news of which slipped out during EA's earnings call extravaganza the other day.

Interesting... as long as it's a proper battlefield game, I don't care what the setting is.

Yea it looks considerably better than 1942 did, and if it plays as good as 42 did, I'm on board for sure.  I expect this game will sell for $15 or $20.  3 maps is low, but most 1942 servers only played the same map all the time anyways.  It'd be a bit of a hard sell if it was just a full retail complete 1942 remake.

It's the future of WW2, taking place exactly ONE year after those harrowing events of 1942 played out in 999 WW2 themed shooters thus far. So crazy!

Actually, my complaint isn't entirely the war upon which the game is based, but rather, I wonder why there's a need for another Battlefield game to take place in this same time period. Save that for a "modernization" of the series some years from now, when the basic tech of games will be drastically different.

Of course, I imagine they need some game in the pipeline for the time being to keep them afloat until then...

Looks nice. I haven't played a world war 2 game in quite some time, so I guess I'm up to it.

Ohhh Wake Island, has it really been that long?

Nice to see it using the frostbite engine, and nice little nod to the classic Battlefield theme tune. I love that theme tune in all it's incarnations.

And Bad Company 2, nice!

As a long time fan of the series I gotta say I'm not very impressed. Only 3 maps and 24 players on the PC is not a true Battlefield game . They're calling it an XBLA title in the press release. It looks like it could be fun, but I was hoping for more.

I love Battlefield its so amazing and 1943 looks great. FrostBite will definitely add to the game in many new ways. Three maps is low, but then again Day of Defeat: Source only shipped with four, so I'm guess many custom maps and some map packs will get the map count up.

Well you got Bad Company 2 which has a PC release as well as consoles this time, and that one will be more substantial, unless you consider the inclusion of a single player mode to be a negative.

I dreamed about this day for some time... And finally a new WWII BF game is comming out.. The thing that really did it for me, in BF1942 was the dog fights.. and non homing missile gameplay.. so im totally hyped for this!

Dammit why does almost every WW2 game have to be from the American perspective? They didn't even do that much in the war,and they joined halfway through, and only when it benefited them.I would love to see this game be from the Canadian point of view set in the battle for the Anzio Bridgehead.

It's just that when a game that is developed for the console gets ported to PC it usually doesn't work well. Although DICE has a long history on the PC so we'll see.

I love how they're showing footage for another battlefield game when they one they've been working on forever still is in on again off again"beta". If they take the same approach with this one as Heros, we'll see 1943 in around 10 years, if we're lucky.

I don't think there's much to worry about in this case.  The Mirror's Edge port was just fine I hear.

Bad Company 2 is good news, the screen looks pretty cool too.  Really don't care about Battlefield again...why do the insist on releasing games we've all played before again and again?

I loved BF: 1942, way more than the sequels that followed. Even if this is just the old game with a new coat of paint I don't care, I just wanna rock some more WW2 Battlefield.

I like the download only focus. But I have been wanting a real Battlefield 3 since 2005. This is not that game, nor is BF Heroes. And I kinda hate WWII era games. Oh well, at least it will be more colorful than 2142.

Also, no ranks/unlocks? C'mon!

EDIT: @ Hatking: The games really aren't the same. Especially since they're modifying the BF formula by disabling unlocks and shrinking the server size to a third of what it should be. Though I agree that revisiting an era recently (and overly) explored gets old fast.

The reason BF is what it is, is the massive maps and sheer amount of action. Size keeps things fresh and varied. However with the destruction to the environment, there is quite a bit of variance and tactical improvisation as a result.

Hmmm I dunno what to think about this. I'm kind of excited but I'm kinda scared. If it's being released on PSN and XBLA then what's PC getting it for? Hopefully about 15-20$. I would be expecting 64 player combat in this day and age. Oh well, hopefully I'll pick this up for PC.

Oh, and BFBC2...Woot?...Thumbs Up?

I didn't really care for some of the battlefields.  I liked modern combat, I didn't care for the battlefield set in the future.  But I might give this one a try.

Come on!  How many times can we kill nazis before developers realize it's played out?!  Even Indiana Jones is sick of fighting nazis, that's why the last movie takes place during the Cold War.

For PC users I think 1943 will be a significant release... this will be the first playable game using the Frostbite engine on the PC.  It's essentially a tech demo of what is to come with Bad Company 2 on PC...  I wonder if BC2 is BF3...

Additionally I wonder if they will they include the first person body as seen in Mirror's Edge? or maybe they'll save this for Bad Company 2.

@Evilmetal: Mirror's Edge is a playable PC game using the Frostbite engine. Though the aim sensitivity seems to go way down when you're looking really far up or down. That seems like some thumbstick aim-code misapplied to the mouse.

But I too like seeing the body of my character in FPS games. I thought it was weird as hell in Far Cry 2 that you only seem to have a lower body when you're pulling bullets out of it.

They've said there will only be a 24 player limit, and no unlocks. BUT WAKE ISLAND IS BACK HAR HAR!!!

Yeah, the Battlefiled series has been EA-ified (in lamens terms, brutally raped and murdered).

I'm close to finishing Bad Company, which is the first Battlefield game I've played. It really took me by surprise how good it was and how much I enjoyed it, so this is one I'll be keeping an eye out for.
