Battlefield Returning to WWII In 1943

Finally, a new World War II-themed shooter we can get excited about.

I never thought I would get excited about another World War II first-person shooter in my lifetime, but that was before EA and DICE went and announced a new Battlefield game set in that time period. The year is 1943, the maps are three, and the platforms are...PC, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network?

Well, the scale of it might be a little smaller than what you would have expected, but this is certainly better than nothing. Especially since one of the three maps in '43 will be Wake Island, the map I spent probably 90% of my time on in the original Battlefield 1942. (And if it hadn't been for Battle of the Bulge, that number would have approached 100.) Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal are the other two maps.

Here's a trailer and a couple of screens depicting what we're in for. Downloadable or not, the game looks pretty damn slick. Basically like '42 with destructible trees. I'm onboard.

While we're on the subject, DICE also put out the first screen of Bad Company 2, news of which slipped out during EA's earnings call extravaganza the other day.

Guys, the fact it's set during World War 2 doesn't really matter — stop bitching about it. It's a multiplayer-only game, and to be honest the Battlefield formula tends to work with whatever era it happens to use as a backdrop.

I'm guessing a lot of you console-only gamers haven't much experience with Battlefield, so it may help to be aware that out of (I think) six Battlefield games, only one has been set in World War 2. In order of setting, it's been:

  1. World War 2
  2. Vietnam War
  3. Fictional modern war (China vs US vs Middle East)
  4. Fictional future war (Europe vs Far East)
  5. Fictional modern war (Russia vs US)
Battlefield is just coming back round again and revisiting its original setting, which it hasn't really done for about eight years. Considering that Battlefield games tend to be fucking fantastic, I don't see the problem with this. And besides, there may be a lot of World War 2 games but none have really done the online component of the war anywhere near as well as Battlefield has, with all the vehicles and such.

Oh my god that is damn pathitic 24 multiplayer is even less than Battlefield 1942 that had 64 players. hell it even looks worse than Battlefield 1942 and that came damn game came out in 2002. Hell even the maps looks the same.

Wake me when they put out the real  new Battlefield game.

Bad Company is total crap. Do not want that either.

I'm more excited about Bad Company 2.  That was a great game that took the Battlefield series into the direction it needed to go.  I'd like to see the 2042 series again as well, it's a shame it got ignored by all the douchebags pissing and moaning about ads and DRM.  Play the damn game and stop crying already, it's assholes like them that helped make PC gaming the joke it is today.

Fuck bad company, thats not a real battlefield game.  But only 3 maps?  I don't know but I dont think they would sell this game that cheap, especially on the 360 and PS3.  Also, this is EA, you know they are gonna charge as much as possible.  Also, 1943, thats just a number because obviously some of these maps would not be in there if they followed that year.  Still one of the better arcade games.

USEFUL INFO:

This will only have 24 players max, 3 MAPS only, and no unlocks.

That's what we call  a ripoff.

No, this IS NOT the "classic battlefield formula".

Thats because Battlefield has never been a good shooter and the only reason people liked it so much was because it supported 64 players for massive battles. As soon as you take away all the players the game seems rather mediocre and there are other online FPS games that do small scale battles far better. So a Battlefield game without 64 players sucks....... I was expecting 128 seeing as technology has come this far and even Joint Operations which was far better than Battlefield 2 had 150 in 2004 and Planetside had 900ish per island.

@MrKlorox: Mirror's Edge used a modified version of the Unreal 3 engine, NOT the Frostbite engine.

Anyways...  Honestly I'm looking forward to both of these!  A Xbox LIVE Arcade Battlefield is pretty cool (3 maps... who cares!  I got Wake Island, I'm happy).  And Bad Company 2 is lookin' good... too!  I heard it'll sport jungle maps as well, can't wait.  Even though the player count is much lower compared to the PC games (I own BF2 and BF2142 btw), I enjoyed Bad Company the most out of the Battlefield franchise and I will probably love these as well.

Looks sweet. I hope the downloadable size doesn't limit it, but the Bad Company explosions look intact. Count me in for this one. And more Bad Company is also cool.

So you're right. That is some pretty retarded shit if you ask me.

Gross. Also Where is there BF2 imagery in the trailer. I say you're imagining things.

FYI I thoroughly disagree with this assertion, and I sincerely doubt I'm alone seeing as Battlefield 2 and Battlefield 2142 continue to have thousands upon thousands of players on a daily basis — beating pretty much all games that've come out since, excluding Call of Duty 4 which it's hot on the heels of.

Battlefield has excellent gunplay and vehicular warfare, and also popularised the unlock systems games like Call of Duty have since started using. It's also a lot more strategic than most multiplayer shooters due to the extremely sophisticated squad/command systems, including the commander role which I don't believe I've seen any other game equal.

This is....interesting.  If it's a downloadable game, then how is it going to work for the PC?  Steam perhaps?  Either way, I think it's pretty crummy that they are only doing three maps.  Would've liked to see some of the stuff from DC mod come over, like No Fly Zone or Lost Village.  Actually...Lost Village would be AMAZING.

AND FFS, BRING BACK CTF MATCHES, DAMMIT!!!

I'd imagine that EA Store will be the primary avenue they push it down, Steam will be the secondary distribution focus, and that GameSpy will be transparently used as the matchmaking backend. I really wish they'd realise it's a dead horse and just fully work through Steam instead, though.

Battlefield 1943 looks to be a good deal for me. While BC2 seems to be aiming at the more traditional Battlefield Crowd, 1943 seems to be aiming at a more Casual market. Auto Health Regen, Unlimited Ammo, Simplified Classes: Sounds like Battlefield Heroes on Steroids.

Which is not exactly a bad thing. Still buying it.

I enjoyed Bad Company, but not enough to warrant a purchase.  I gameflyed it and will likely do the same with the sequel.  As for 1943, I can't wait for the demo on XBL.  Truth be told, I am wary of how much this game will cost when, at present it has only 3 maps, and limits the player count to 24.  If they charge $20 or over, I'm going to pass on it.  For 10 bucks more, I could get Warhawk, which has 32 players, 25 maps, and more game modes plus there is a ton of extra content available now. Like I said, it all depends on the price.  Come it at $12 and it's an automatic purchase.  Bump up the map total to 5 and I'd be willing to pay $15.

I do want a "jump in and play" shooter on one of my systems hard drives, but only time will tell if this is the one I've been waiting for.  I looks nice, and I enjoyed the NYC Comic-con walkthrough over at Game-Trailers.

Ah, I like the idea of this game.  I got into 1942 pretty late in the product cycle, and 2142 was atrocious (there were also only 12 servers up last time I checked).  Eventually they'll run out of WWII years, but it feels like it's been long enough to refresh the series.

It's just going to be like BF1942 all over again, everyone is going to make a mad dash to the planes and then proceed to camp there while the enemy has taken control of over half the map. But I digress, I'm disappointed I don't see coral sea as part of the map pack because that's where all the fun is at.

I like the Japanese version of the Battlefield fanfare. Also I played this game at Comic-Con and it was awesome! It plays like Bad Company but with WWII weapons and more accessible design choices. For an XBLA and PSN title, it's going to be more than worth the money!
