Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 PSN Requires An Internet Connection

Good thing you used one to download it, right?

Consider the following a PSA of sorts: The PSN version of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 is using a form of DRM that requires an Internet connection when it boots. So, if your PS3 can’t talk to the cloud upon start-up, you won’t be able to play the game, despite the total absence of online functionality aside from basic leaderboards stuff (via TheSixthAxis).

Sound familiar? It should, for the Capcom devout out there. Final Fight: Double Impact had the exact same DRM, though the bugbear was that the publisher didn’t make it clear upfront that the game was protected. This time around, Capcom makes a note in the PSN Store description stating that you have to “log-in to the PSN each time to play the game.”

The Xbox Live Arcade version of Rearmed doesn’t have this kind of DRM, which probably says something about how many people are still sharing their PSN games through bogus profiles. I'll update if Capcom goes on record with a response as to why the game is protected as it is, or addresses some of the outcry from BC fans who aren't digging this form of rather... restrictive protection.

Yup, piracy is clearly a problem you find only on the PC.

I use the multi-ps3 thing to share stuff with my family overseas. If Capcom has a problem with that then I have a problem with Capcom.

Of course, I haven't updated my PS3 past 3.15, so I guess this doesn't affect me. Its just irksome that game publishers are so willing to compromise their customer experience.

I was going to buy this game on the ps3, but luckily I searched some forums in fear of DRM first.
Now if Capcom by some miracle removed the DRM I'd buy it in a second, but judging by Final Fight: DI, that ain't going to happen sadly.

My PS3 is always connected anyway, and I don't share games.
So no biggie to me.

Considering that you need an internet connection to buy the game, I'm going to chalk this up as a non-issue.

This sux, but this is really Sony's fault.  Honestly, Sony's DRM on the PSN games is so loose that I would not want to release a game on PSN.  They should really adopt something along the lines of Steam style or even Xbox style DRM.

Sorry.  I am expecting this to be unpopular.

Clearly this will serve one purpose for them: accurate metrics of who bought the game legitimately.
Since we all know pirates still get to play the cracked game offline anyway.

I'm pretty sure that all publishers have a problem with mutliple copies of a single licence being spread around

Only people who actually complain are actually the people that Capcom is DRM is targeting which is the cheapskate pirater. There are also people who complain to just about everything and they dont even own the console or not going to buy the game.

@udabenshen: Any shot you can elaborate on that? I don't know much about how these things work, so I'm curious what makes it easier on PSN.

Also, this really bothers me for the sole reason that I can't, for the life of me, get a solid constant connection to PSN. I can normally play games online fine, but for some reason staying connected to just PSN (things like the store, or being connected while not playing an online game) is impossible for me. So I would probably never buy this game, out of fear I couldn't ever play it.

 - constant internet connection required
- still no online play regardless
- versus mode completely eliminated
- load times everywhere, making challenge rooms extremely annoying to play
- 50% more expensive

Capcom. Superior.

I was also interested in buying this game, but I refuse to buy any games that have this kind of strict DRM.

Yes, I buy the game online, so you would think I have a constant connection, most of the time I do. However, storms happen...internet connections can cut out, or hell sometimes I'm really short on money, and have gotten my internet  turned off for a couple weeks. I would like to have access to the games I legally  purchased regardless if I have an internet connection!

Even if the problem isn't on my end, there have been times when PSN has just not worked. Not to mention, after seeing companies like Microsoft already having servers shut down for the original Xbox (which is bull shit, there were still plenty of people playing Halo 2 still), it does not make me feel very confident that they will keep their service active for a particular system forever. I still own my NES and some of the games from over 20 years ago, and occasionally I actually still play them. Can Sony and Capcom assure me that I will still have access to the PSN server 20 years from now, so I can play my copy of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 then? Doubt it...

Didn't really plan to buy it anyway.  One game was enough, and I'd rather they moved on to another franchise like Trojan or Black Tiger.

Someone remind me why this game is worth anything? I don't mean to degrade a companies work, but this game looks f'ing terrible. It looked awful on the live show on Friday and now this is just the cherry on the cake. Someone please explain to me the appeal of this title?

I really couldn't care less. I bought it because I thought it looked great.
..and it is.

I might go back for a few trophies after I finish the game, but that's about it. Just like the first Rearmed. So the whole "always on" thing means very little to me.

Or maybe it's the people that take their PS3's with them wherever they go. Or maybe it's the people that have a shitty internet connection.

AFAIK, you can only install a PSN game on up to 3 consoles now anyway, I have 2 PS3s, so it's nice to be able to install on both.  They are both online tho, so this is kind of a non-issue for me personally.

and for people who have problems with it being connected to the internet all the time, just connect, then start the game and then disconnect and bam there it is.

I don't have a PS3. This is because of people sharing PSN profiles, not because of the recent geohotz/failoverflow crap?

If you can't connect even for a moment then you probably can't connect at all, genius.

I can only go online on my 360 when I'm home from university. So yes- this is an issue. I can't connect to XBL but I still want to be able to play the games I've previously downloaded.

If thats how you feel about the game, then nobody is going to be able to explain the appeal to you.  I'll try though. Some people think side scrolling shooters that are reminiscent of older games are fun. Its as simple as that. I don't know how you can't possibly see that.

That feels iffy to me. Then again, given the poor reviews and the fact that I didn't think much of the first Rearmed anyway my care-o-meter is kind of running on empty for this one anyway, so there's that.

Still, intrusive DRM on consoles is just bad customer relations IMO, if they want to burn their redownloads by sharing the games beyond the EULA I get how it's not ideal for the publisher, but it's still something they may want to address with Sony and how they structure their download policy, not with the end user.

In the student hall where I live, it's hard to impossible to get a console online. I could take it to a friends house to buy it, but then I couldn't actually play it.

For everyone to assume that everyone ALWAYS has the internet, you're being very naive and idiotic. It's a shame, because I WAS going to buy this, but I guess now I'm going to pirate it on PC. Apples and oranges

I'm glad I purchased this on my 360 because:

I never have my PS3 hooked up to the internet, it has no wifi (20gb model) and thus requires a lot of rewiring to get the ethernet cable to reach. Thank god I waited one single day and got it on the superior Xbox 360.

Whelp I'm slightly happier I waited an extra day for the xbox release before buying it. I only did that because I played the other one on the xbox and I figured they'd look nice together on my profile.

I can understand why capcom did do it though. Just kinda sad it's come to this. Though that's what I said about Assassin's Creed 2, so yeah whatever.

Fair enough, but I'd probably rather play an old side scrolling shooter than what I have seen of Commando 2, though I suppose everything gets redone every so many years. It just looks, not very good. Watching Jeff die in the same spot about 20 times and Brad doing the 'GG' sound pretty much confirmed for me that it wasn't that good, after the developers themselves kept dying and stuffing up and struggling at a game that they themselves conceived. Maybe I've just got the wrong spin in my head of what the game is meant to be. I don't know.

Here in the U.S. high-speed internet isn't nearly as widespread as in other industrialized countries, such as those of Western Europe (due to our aversion to high-density living). My home on the rural Northern California coast still has dial-up, so this absolutely sucks for me.

Genius.

Its not the perfect system, I never said it was, but its the only option if you want to play it on PS3.
So if you can't do that then buy another game and leave it at that.
