Gearbox's loot-driven wasteland romp Borderlands ain't even on store shelves till next week--with a PC release following on Steam the week after that--but the developer is already spilling the beans about its post-release plans for downloadable content.
Described as "the first in a series" of add-ons, The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned will run you $10 on all three platforms. Here's a brief description of what's in there.
Tasked with keeping the workers of Jakobs Cove alive, Dr. Ned (who is not related to Dr. Zed from Fyrestone) does his job a little too well, creating zombies and other abominations that now run rampant in this region. Players will have to work alongside Dr. Ned as they embark on a quest to cure the inhabitants of Jakobs Cove in this full-fledged expansion filled with new enemies, new quests and rare loot drops.
More importantly, here's what it looks like.
The real question, of course, is exactly how much content and how big a landmass this pack entails. Jeff's closing in on the level cap in Borderlands right next to me, so we'll have a full review of the shipping game next week, and you can look for this DLC pack to hit "later this year."
Ok, this is starting to piss me off. People who complain about DLC being released so close to launch are retarded. Game developers stop making content sometimes months before actual release. The last little while before release is spent tweaking and polishing the game so that your 60 dollar game isnt broken. Would you prefer they left all the bugs in so they have time to include your dlc on the disc? It's 10 bucks people. I know I'd rather spend 10 extra bucks to get this dlc for a game that actually is playable. But whatever, if you want to play a broken game thats your decision.
I also agree with people who think this DLC has been released a little early and is a blaitent money making scheme, nevertheless I also agree that it does look very good, and I will probably get it. Who knows it may even be worth 800 points.
It might be a bad marketing move releasing it prelaunch, however i don´t think that makes the moneygrabbing people. The designers and programmers mostly don´t have anything to do in the final months before release, so why not work on DLC
@caseylakes: Blatant money making scheme??? From a company??? Anwyway, like one commenter already stated, there is some time between when a game goes gold and launch, so why not work on a little bit of content. I defy you to play Borderlands and feel like there is a lack of content.
@handlas: After playing the game myself and realizing GB was just not showing us spoilers, your post just sounds handicapped. I was going to say retarded but god forbid the PC police come after me.
I was skeptical at first, but seeing how much fun I'm having with Borderlands, I really hope this is good enough for a purchase. Hopefully they'll add more than just a couple new quests and items.
Well, I beat the game yesterday. Level 50 hunter...beat it all. Even have max money...9999999. (Which doesn't run out?) Anyways instead of a new island how bout steering towards Diablo 2. Give us a channel, Trading option so I would be motivated to farm for better guns, Dueling games, Maybe let us solo the bosses again? Items off the last boss on play through #2 was about 5 whites and 1 green gun? Really? Hes the biggest and hardest boss in the game. Also forget the island...I know Call of Duty nazi zombies and Left for dead zombies is whats in right now but......LET US GO IN THE VAULT! Let us kill huge monsters! I could rant on but I'm going to stop. I'm just disappointed my $60.00 i spent lasted not even a week. The game has potential! Looks like I'm gonna go play Call of Duty WaW and World of Warcraft again..Yawn
Yeah really no reason to complain. Who's to say it's 100% complete? Also it seems like an entire extra campaign separate from the actual plot of the game, therefore it's perfect for DLC. Doesn't fit in the retail box.
I seriously hope they go the route of Fallout 3 and speedily release a long string of high-quality DLC campaigns. Those were all pretty fun, and would love to see that level of support for Borderlands.
Way to be dicks about "oh no, bad marketing with this" No one's making you buy the DLC. Instead you guys whine about it saying " ridiculous DLC scams to make the game more expensive" You DON'T HAVE TO BUY IT.
@Ockman: Theyre done making the game about 2-3 weeks ago, but they have to make copies of cds, manuals, and cover art and cd art. You cant just delay a game for a maybe 5-6 new missions and a new area.
I'm a level 40 about 10% into my second playthrough. I'd really love some new content to spice up that trek to the end, again. I hope Gearbox follows Bethesda's lead and keeps releasing good DLC to me coming back again and again.
