Bungie Starts Selling Destiny Level Boost Packs for $30

These microtransaction packs will instantly increase a character to level 25 and max out one subclass tree.

Either pretend that he's actually giving a thumbs down or that thumbs ups are negative in the Destiny canon.
Either pretend that he's actually giving a thumbs down or that thumbs ups are negative in the Destiny canon.

Destiny fans woke up to a surprise this morning: More microtransactions.

Starting today, players will be able to buy "Class Packs" from Xbox Live and PSN (A North American PSN page is not available as of the time of this writing.) For $30, players will be able to instantly boost one character to level 25, max out one subclass, and speed up weapon leveling with a set of telemetries.

I'm not fundamentally opposed to selling level 25 boosts, but then again, my personal use case for that is pretty high. As someone with an end game Hunter and very little free time, I have to admit that it'd be great to quickly gain access to the raids and high level strikes with another class. I'd even pay a couple of bucks for it instead of replaying the game's campaign--which really drags throughout the early going. But asking $30 dollars for this boost is absurd. The Taken King included one of these boosts, and that was a $40 dollar expansion that greatly improved and expanded Destiny. On its face, asking 10 dollars less than that expansion for a level 25 boost doesn't make sense.

Things become a little bit clearer if you stop focusing on the class boost and think about the subclass boost, though. Each of the game's three classes are further subdivided into three subclasses. If you're playing as the spry Hunter, for instance, you can choose to wield the knives of the infused Bladedancer, control the bow of a void-powered Nightstalker, or use the sun-powered hand cannon of the Gunslinger. These subclasses are what give you both your active and passive abilities, determining how you double jump, what your super moves do, and even basic stat boosts.

Play Destiny for 10-12 hours and you'll likely hit level 25, but you'll come no where close to maxing out one of these subclass. Plus, while the Crucible (Destiny's PVP mode) equalizes everyone's weapon damage, it doesn't do the same for subclass unlocks. That means that while a level 20 character and a level 40 character both do the same base amount of damage, the level 40 likely has a more fully leveled subclass and therefore has an array of abilities and options that the level 20 doesn't. It's easy to see how this subclass boost feels like a (very expensive) "pay-to-win" microtransaction for those players who are interested in the game's PVP.

Honestly, this is a bummer. Reports indicate that Destiny won't be getting any more smaller expansions like last year's House of Wolves or The Dark Below, and instead the game will offer regular events (like the current Sparrow Racing League). Without those expansions, the game will need to support itself via optional purchases like October's cosmetic microtransactions, which seemed to go over well. Unfortunately, I can't imagine that today's announcement will be as well received by the community. It sets a bad precedent and it's an incredibly frustrating step for a game that has really improved itself over the last year or so.

But hey, as it turns out, Destiny isn't the only Activision game adding microtransactions today. The company is also rolling out Call of Duty Points for Black Ops 3 today. Those don't seem as poorly conceived as these class packs, but I also don't have a strong enough understanding of that game's design and culture to judge.

In any case, I'm crossing my fingers that the blowback to these packs will be big enough to deter further expansion in this direction, because if it doesn't we might be looking at the new normal.

"Micro"-transactions.

We need a new name for this stuff, calling them micro is beyond ridiculous now when games are selling dance emotes for $5.

$30 is WAY, WAY more than a "microtransaction." Half of the cost of the game is a macrotransaction. An ultratransaction. A hypertransaction.

$30 and only level 25? And only for one character? The absurdity of selling it in the first place aside, that price just seems wrong.

Although not entirely surprising coming from a company linked with Activision-Blizzard and their $60 WoW character boosts.

"Macrotransaction" has been a tongue-in-cheek way of referring to bigger in-game payments, but I honestly think it should be a real legitimate term. So far, it is not part of the GB wiki database. Everybody please sign my change.org petition to add it to the database.

It's kind of funny that Destiny keeps making news with new and exciting micro-transactions, but I guess that's the way Bungie is going with it. $30 seems a bit crazy, but I guess WoW charges like $60 for it's level boost so I guess there's precedent for it. Still seems a bit much, but I quit playing Destiny a couple hours after I bought it so what do I know.

I was totally fine with them selling emotes for money, that's cool. Especially if they're going to hold to what they said about the future content updates being funded by those transactions and not having to charge up for small updates like they did with Dark Below and House of Wolves. This though...while still relatively harmless as far as game balance goes, I see this as them starting down the slippery slope of I'm not even sure what to call it anymore. Its definitely not a micro-transaction; $30 puts it way out of range of that. Macrotransaction? No, that's dumb. Anyways, I easily see them start selling ships, sparrows and, I really hope not, but I wouldn't be surprised if them started selling the weapon upgrade materials.

I really enjoy Destiny, even though it took one and a half years and $120 to get to a point where it feels like a full game finally. This isn't what I wanted with the game and I really hope they don't push these purchases too much further than emotes and level boosts.

whatever if people are dumb enough to pay it fine...my issue with microtransactions are when they mess with the gameplay in such a way where it's actually impossible to get to something UNLESS you pay for it. I don't think this is that.

That caption about the thumbs up made me laugh because you can buy Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down emotes for real money. Even better, you can only equip one at a time.

Copying what I posted in the topic about this earlier:

My problem with it is that the actual thing they are selling is dumb. It's useless for new players (The Taken King expansion comes with one of these), and if you want to level an alt, paying that much to get to the halfway point sucks. Actual level still isn't even the real level in that game, no matter how much Bungie tried to say it is (Light Level is still king, the real game doesn't start until 40). It's a half-assed solution.

I'm surprisingly not caring about this, if people want to skip playing the game then I think it's fine to charge for it. I'm more not-feeling-it that if I wanted to play more Destiny now a year later I would have to up 60 bucks more to get the content. That price point seems too high.

@monkeyman04: Thanks! Writing with a cold (and under really tight time pressure) today, so sorry for the sloppiness!

@purplepartyrobot: So, again, maybe this wasn't clear here, but it is way more than 8 hours being shredded due to the subclass booster. Those things have taken me dozens of hours to max out.

I'm glad Austin pointed out the sub-class part of this. I was trying to think of some reason anyone who's not a millionaire would pay $30 for a boost to level 25, since that's almost useless (it's only slightly more useful than burning the money, and probably less fun since you're paying to not have to play the game). But, getting a maxed-out sub-class takes way longer than even getting to level 40, so I could see why someone might buy this to get an edge. I'm in the 'micro-transactions in $60+ games are always gross' camp, but this seems even more gross than usual if it gives you an advantage in a competitive mode.

I don't want to defend Bungie, but this was probably Activision's decision, not their's. Also, paying 30 bucks to play LESS of a game is pure insanity.

I mean, they can ask whatever price they want. This doesn't affect the game itself so this seems ok. If someone doesn't want to level through the early parts and feels that it's worth $30 to skip it, more power to them. If they start rolling out DLC that negatively impacts the experience then it's time to find a new game.

The original term for microtransactions was RMT, real money transactions.

And I know the gaming community loves being reactionary, but this is such a non issue. The value proposition is absurd, there are only three character classes, and you get basically nothing for your 30 dollars considering the incredibly relaxed leveling curve of the game.

This isn't a great evil, it is an incredibly overpriced option for someone who has way way more money than time. It isn't gating anything from the community, it isn't a slippery slope (this was a guaranteed occurrence once the item came to be with taken king), and it isn't pay to win.

People just love piling on a soft target like Destiny.
