Confirmed: Nintendo's 2010-2011 Lineup to be Totally Badass

That 2008-2009 window, though, is maybe a little less certain.

Eurogamer's Tom Bramwell has the story on October's issue of Edge Magazine, which has a statement from Nintendo about its dedication to the "core gamers"

The quotes go a bit like this:

"We have never neglected our core gamers. We still have developers working on popular core gaming franchises but we need longer to complete these games, approximately two to three years."

aaaaaand there's this one:

"These games are not ready to launch in early 2009 but are being worked on by all development teams."

Be sure to check out Eurogamer's story for a bit more context... you might also want to track down the October issue of Edge, while you're at it, to trace this all the way back to its source. But for now, let's just assume this hasn't been telephoned into something bigger than it really is and think about this for a bit.

The concept of Nintendo focusing on the mainstream audience isn't exactly new, right? In case you already blocked it out of your memory, 99 percent of the company's E3 press conference was focused on games designed for that crowd. Maybe this says more about my memory than anything else, but what else did the company even show? Here's my recollection of the press conference.

I'm convinced that there must have been more games actually announced during that thing. Anyway, you all probably remember the feelings of disappointment as very few games specifically for people who play games already were shown.

Now, if you read these new quotes a specific way, you could take them to mean that Nintendo's going to keep riding the family train until at least 2010 and leave you wondering why you waited out in front of a store to buy a Wii the second they were released. Or you could take them to mean what it says: that the games from the "popular core franchises" that Nintendo is known for are going to take awhile.

To me, this all comes down to what games Nintendo uses to fill in the next 24-36 months of blanks. This could (if I may express a little hope here) mean that the company is working on a bunch of new stuff that could appeal to people like you and me. That, to me, would be the best possible outcome. After all, this generation has already seen its Mario, Metroid, and Zelda. Nintendo isn't exactly known for pumping out key games in those franchises on an annual basis. So obviously, it's going to be awhile before we see anything along those lines.

Or maybe I'm just hoping too much and we're in for a few years of family friendly excitement that may or may not appeal to those of us who can handle a standard controller.

This, as you might have guessed, has become our question of the day. What do you think about all this? Are you tearing your hair out and selling your Wii, stat? Or are you going to sit back and see how all this pans out? What are you hoping to see on the Wii over the next couple of years?

Personally I regret getting a Wii because of the new focus to the "mainstream* or casual gamers. I won't sell my Wii but as of now I let it continue to collect dust while I play my 360 and PS3.

Boy I can't wait to get ahold of some nintendo smiles.  I'm anxious to see how the wiimote is incorporated into me smiling.  Perhaps I can hold it up to my face and shake it.

I'll wait and see. I still just want to be able to walk in and just buy a Wii, whenever I want. This isn't the case as most of the places with Wii's available bundle them up.

Well actually, funny you should ask, but I just put my Wii up for sale on craigslist. Galaxy was nice and all, but excessive smiling just doesn't do it for me. I don't know maybe smiles are the best thing since thin crust pizza for some people.

My brother just bought a PS3 because of the poor lineup of games the Wii has deep into 2009. The only few Wii games that look interesting are Madworld, Dead Rising: CTYD, and House of the Dead: Overkill, and maybe a few others, and NONE of them are made by Nintendo. And what's a Nintendo console without Nintendo developed games???? What would the Wii look like without Capcom and Sega?!?

I'm keeping my Wii, since I <3 Nintendo too much to sell it. I stuck through the GameCube era, this can't be too bad.

I've thought of selling my Wii for months now, but I know the second I sell it, someone will announce a game I'll want for it. I've had my Wii for close to a year now and have only bought 3 games for it, while I've bought so many games for my Ps3 and 360. MadWorld looks really interesting, so there's hope yet.

That's a lot to ask of someone to wait years without knowing if they will ultimately even like those games. I realize there is a huge user base for that console, but will any of that casual (lack of a better term) audience even care about the next console cycle? It just seems like over the longer period of time the gamer willing to spend the most money will have moved on. Afterall, the people that play a couple of minutes a day are pretty clearly not the same people buying ten games a year.

That's too bad, it really is.

I waited as long as I could and finally sold it last week.  I hadn't turned it on in months save for firmware updates.  There's nothing there right now to make me want to keep it, maybe a couple more years it'll be worth looking at again.

Since I bought my Wii I've purchased 1 game for it, and like 15 game cube games. I had my Wii in a gym bag in my closet for about 2 months before I bought Odama which forced me to hook it up again.

The new direction Nintendo is taking is very disappointing to me, but a few solid third party games would still be good enough for me. Skate It, for example.

I waited too long in the damn Wal-Mart to sell the thing now.  I'm gonna get every bit of my money outta the Wii...even if it kills me, and as far as I'm concerned that thing has a reserved spot right next to me in my coffin, funchuck and all.

Getting a Nintendo Wii was so difficult for me. I never had the right timing when it came to waiting in the 3 lines I waited in and with no hope in sight, by chance, a Circuit City happened to have one behind the counter the day after christmas 2006. How the heck that I happened I don't know..Anyway, I enjoyed the Wii a lot when I first got it and there was for a time a good, paced, line up of games from Nintendo. Zelda, Metroid, and Mario. I also played my first Resident Evil game on the Wii, 4 was magnificent. Brawl is good too, but after a few months with that I find myself not playing that anymore. I feel kind of betrayed by Nintendo. Where at one time I was a die hard Nintendo fan(My first system was a Super NES when I was 4, followed by the 64 when I was 10, and GC when I was 13.) Now I follow the 360 and PS3 more closely. Thankfully a close friend of mine bought a 360 when the Wii came out because they were out of Wiis, otherwise we would be in a hardcore gaming hole. I've been playing my PC at home more than anything, buying big games like Orange Box, CoD4, and others. Nintendo needs to consider how they are poisoning a video game companies best friend, the gamers that grew up with them and made them great.

We have not seen a "this gen zelda" there has been a good standard of two zeldas a gen. The N64 got  Zelda:OT and Zelda:MM the cube got windwaker AND twilight princess which was developed for the gamecube and was due to be released a good 8 months before the wii's debut so that totaly does not count in my books as a wii game.

Over all my thought is WHERE IS THE ZELDA NINTENDO?! 2009 SHOULD HAVE ONE!
ninty have obviously been ramping down on their "core" auidence and putting less focus on the "core" gamers wants, such as mario and zelda ect
i might only be guessing here but the new "causal" focus and the games it entails seems to be a lot less harder to make earns them hella more monies and is why ninty have said lets just keep the core barely satifyed and sit on our golden diamond encrusted throne a little longer till we have to depend on our core to keep us in the green again (if that ever happens)

There are plenty of great games for the Wii and the third-party trickle of enjoyable material will continue to come.  And as busy as I am recently, I'd much rather have a few quality games over quantity.

After the N64 and GameCube I am not even giving the Wii a chance with a purchase. Nintendo has let me down twice. I'm never going back the N and this is the kind of crap as to why. Nintendo with GameCube pulled a "oh well we only have a handfull of great games but more are on the way". That was story straight up till the Wii and now with the Wii. When will Nintendo learn that you got to rely on third party support not rehashing every game you've ever made and stretching for new IPs by butchering old ones and pulling out inane asinine characters and giving them games.

It is what it is. Looking at the road Nintendo has gone down with the Wii, and the reaction from gamers every step of the way, I think a lot of Wii owners are victims of their own nostalgia. I predicted when the Wii first launched that the best developers (wanting as much freedom as possible regardless of the game they were making) weren't going to code their best games for the Wii. By freedom I'm referring to the hardware limitations of the Wii versus the Xbox, Xbox 360, and now the PS3. And I'm not talking just graphics hardware - I mean the entire package. But as we all know, your voice is your dollar. I think Nintendo being profitable with the Wii isn't a victory for Old-School Nintendo fans as much as it is an enabler for Nintendo to go forward with their Wii agenda. That agenda is and always was compromised hardware (regardless of what gamers and devs want), gimmick controls, and casual/family gaming. It's up to the people to decide if that's what they're settling for.

Nintendo is the new Atari. No don't laugh, you know it's fucking true. For a company making so much from Wii and DS sales I think they could invest in beefing up their studios to produce more games in a shorter ammount of time. No one expects epics every 6 months but a good quality core game should be available every 3. If Nintendo cannot provide that then yes, they have left the core gamer behind. That's not to be mistaken with forgetting about them, which they haven't, they are just not Nintendo's bread and butter anymore.

Ravi Drums, dude. Jeff, don't you ever forget that name. Ravi Drums was that drummer. He drummed hard. So hard.
Yeah, dude. Their press conference totally sucked. It was the worst one I have ever seen. My Wii remains snug in its box, waiting to come out again. If only Nintendo could give me a reason to hook it up again. Heh, even the new Mario Sluggers game is like an exact replica of the last Gamecube Sluggers game that came out 3 years ago. What gives, Nintendo? I thought you were the man, Reggie. Now that you're in charge, this is what Nintendo has become?

Yeah, I've pretty much read all that's been bugging me about Nintendo lately. Since they have found a new crowd that will give them a hell of a lot more profit than hardcore gamers, they will cater to that crowd and leave the hardcore gamers biting the dust. What they forget, is that these are the people who know how to do certain things that will enable them to circumvent certain processes in acquiring games. If you screw them over, they will screw you over. That's what's happened to the music/movie industry, and they better damn learn that. As a whole, the industry is fairly new, and if gaming companies stick to good business strategies that keeps the people who know how to work computers not vengeful, they won't have to worry about things like that. Not on a scale as large as that's taking place now.

Soon as you screw the wrong people over, BAM, some random genius is going to find a mostly retard-proof way to bring pirated games to casual gamers (they already have one for every console that's not widespread, so get your shit together), and there goes your market. So, consider this a threat from someone who knows absolutely nothing about computers and has almost instant access to any movie or song that I want (I don't download pirated stuff, btw, I'm just making a very obvious observation. The kind that big companies tend to miss): don't make beef.

And that rant is brought upon you by extreme exhaustion and alcohol. Whoop whoop...

I've had mine since day one and I still enjoy it just fine, thanks mostly to my backlog of games. There may not be a whole lot for the "hardcore," but I'm loving cheaper titles like Geometry Wars: Galaxies, House of the Dead 2 & 3 (sequel is coming!), and Blastworks just fine.

There are some good games on the Wii already out, but we need to see some more coming out within the next year or so. Games not only for the casual gamer are needed, quick! I'm SOOOOOOOOO tempted to sell my Wii in favour of a ps3 but I don't think I'll have the guts to do it =P

2010 to 2011?!  What have they been doing for the past 2 to 3 years because they sure as hell werent all working on galaxy.
Why would they come out and say this, its like saying we will be an amazing console, in the third to fourth year of its 5 year lifespan.
Recent nintendo antics are making me consider buying a 360 or ps3 to supplement my pc gaming.

The Wii has recently taken over the Most Disappointing spot from the PS3 for me lately. (For me. My opinion only!) I'm not into the casual "games" and was hoping for something great from the Wii. I haven't played it in about six months. So, as for the new games that will be out sometime, I'm not putting any chickens in that basket--hatched or still egg-laden. Ooh, maybe I should sell it... make my money back...hmm....
