Custom Bot Pre-Order Bonus Coming To Portal 2

Because you wouldn't want to use just any old bot.

The anticipation around the release of Portal 2 is already extremely high, considering that the game won't be released until 2011. And though many of us will flock directly to Steam to grab the Valve-developed follow-up, those who venture to brick-and-mortar for the game will get a special treat: a total of five dollars worth of savings, and the promise of "custom bots."

According to GameStop's listing for the game (via MTV), all online and in-store pre-orders will net the purchaser custom bots--note the plural--for the co-op portion of the title. If you remember, the co-op compliment to Portal 2 will feature its own levels and story and (more importantly to this article) star two robots. These robots, from what we've seen thus far, are already pretty distinguishable: one is squat and angrier-looking, while the other is leaner and far more approachable. Valve or EA have yet to explain what these more customizable bots will add to the game, and for that matter, how we'll even be able to customize them in the first place. Blame it on the game's delay, right?

As MTV points out, the Xbox 360 version of Portal 2 is being priced at $54.99 pre-savings, while the PS3 version is still the standard $59.99. The PC/Mac edition, though, is still being listed at $44.

As much as I like gaming on the 360, I feel the need to just buy this game on steam...

Sweet. While I love Steam, I really wish Valve would release some nifty collectors edition of some games, with a figurine and all.

Hmm, I kind of like the default ones well enough. I'd have to see what the custom bots looked like before pre-ordering.

I'm definitely going to get Portal 2, but I'm still hesitant to drop full game price for it.  The first game spoiled me.

Pre-order bonuses can eat a hot bowl of dicks. Sure it's great if you live in the states, but if you don't your gonna have your work cut out.

I'll just get it on Steam for £30 or whatever it is. I'm not interested in any preorder nonsense unless it's a preorder from Steam, which I'll probably do anyway.

With that price, I assume it's gonna be a lot of Portaling in Portal. I'm definitely buying it on Steam, but pfff... a bit expensive, if you ask me.

GameStop is the worst place to buy games. I don't want to give them money and wait in a stupid line when I could just buy it on Steam and have it unlock when it's ready.

Seeing how much free stuff Valve has given me over the years, a stiff price for Portal 2 is wrth it. Oh for fuck sakes, I would pay whatever for more GLaDOS - who am I kidding.

Will likely be heading into the store to get a hard copy anyways. Feel bad for people buying it on the console. Damn price hikes.

@Gregomasta: I like my games to be on Steam. In fact I rarely buy a PC game if it's not on Steam. However, I'm not going to be a Steam fanboy about it. Meaning, since this is a Valve game if I buy it retail (which will be cheaper than on Steam) I'll have to activate it on Steam in order to play it anyway. In the end I get it on Steam no matter where I buy it so I'll get it where I can find it the cheapest.

I don't fucking understand this.

We (developers and publishers) hate how brick and mortar cuts into our bottom line, compared to charging the same price for a purely digital version! Also, we hate shops that "steal" from us by selling used games!

However, we're going to spend time customizing in game assets just for your store to promote yourselves with so people buy the game from you.

What the fuck? Yeah, I know the retailers are paying the developer and publisher for these things, but there's no way they can be paying that much and still making a profit on the games. So what's the deal here and why don't publishers and developers tell them to pound sand?

I don't care about any pre-order bonus unless it's a TF2 hat.

Speaking of which, those robots would sure look a lot more respectable if they were each wearing a stack of at least 2-3 hats.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't preordering L4D2 on steam give you the American Bat, just like the Gamestop preorder? I mean, I know you got Bill's hat in TF2, but still.

With no further information and no picture, I wouldn't get my hopes up for any modular differences, I'm thinking it'll be just a livery design.

@lacke: If you buy this game retail, all it's pretty much going to do is add the key to your Steam account and install from the disk. Really no other difference otherwise between retail and digital in this case.

Sums up my feelings quite well :) I still expect that Valve will provide some nice bonuses for steam purchasers as well though. Plus you have full update support which the 360 version won't have.

You will probably get them too if you buy through Steam. L4D2 had the baseball bat for preorders, which you got if you prepurchased on Steam.

Yeah you just need to make sure you register a new account for any game you plan on selling and then you sell that steam account.

The $5 discount makes up for Uncle Sam tacking $5 onto your in-store purchase. (Well, maybe it's where I live, but I almost never have to pay tax online. Thus I buy online.)
