Double Fine Will Help Publish Gang Beasts

The most obvious development collaboration in the world has happened.

No Caption Provided

If you've been watching Unprofessional Fridays, you know Giant Bomb's love for Gang Beasts, the hilariously weird local multiplayer brawler. Even better? Double Fine is making it part of its "Double Fine Presents" lineup.

With Double Fine Presents, the studio takes smaller games--Mountain, Escape Goat 2--under its wing, and provides various resources to ensure the games make it to the finish line and people are paying attention to them.

Besides showing up at PAX Prime next week, Gang Beasts will launch on Early Access on August 29.

Oh fuck yes! A bit of that Double Fine sheen would take this game to the next level!

Isn't that sheen really just Schafer's perspiration?

And yes, I would love to see Double Fine become a fully self-sufficient studio and even publisher that is just large enough to meet its needs without worrying about keeping the lights out, but remain small enough to keep putting out interesting projects that others just won't bother with.

Tim Schafer, to me, is one of those guys that really makes me still care about gaming. He has that spirit that brings me back to that great enthusiasm and excitement that should surround the world of gaming. Double Fine has lots of people like that. The more of them that are out there doing more things, the better.

Excellent, cool partnership.
It's not going to be much use to me without online though.

I thought this game had actual multi-player. The phrase "local multi-player" just killed all the interest I had in this title. This is a shitty trend in gaming, recently. At least, indie games. I'm sorry, but as a grown ass man, I just don't know enough people who play games and who would all get together, come over to my house at the same time for a play-date, and sit around on a couch like children playing a video game. It's hard enough to even think of getting several grown men in different places on the planet to all play the same game on the same gaming platform at the same time on the same day for internet-based co-op/multi-player.

These games need a new word to define them. Perhaps "dorm-play", because short of being a child or living in a dorm, I don't really see how any meaningful number of people will ever buy and play these games.

Also, are we all really just going to ignore the fact that there is a mountain simulator mobile game?!

You fucking child...you still PLAY video games? I am laughing my fucking ass off.....pathetic. Just shows your immaturity. Maybe you should get a hobby little man child. Your existence is depressing ona profound level.

No, like most adults, I don't play video games much anymore, either. :P I buy them. I collect them. I organize them. I talk about them. I follow them. I eagerly await their release. But play?! Who has time for that?! (And therein lies the problem for most of us as to why the idea of getting groups of us together to play a game at the same time in the same physical space is so ridiculous in an age where social groups are so geographically disparate).

Well I am glad we can both agree on arbitrary bullshit because it happens to be inconvenient to our particular lifestyles, friendships, and living conditions.

Arbitrary bullshit like most people not sitting around a television with friends playing videogames after childhood or college anymore? That's not so much arbitrary bullshit than actual reality. Ask around. Talk to friends. Listen to podcasts. Read articles. Read reviews and forums. Local-only play is a fairly consistent hindrance to a lot of potential purchasers.

you're not making a strong argument for your case when you're basically insulting the kind of people to whom this game caters to. i'm glad things like this are making a comeback, and they hit a certain nostalgia spot with me. and a lot of people have roommates they can play this kind of stuff with (i.e. me).

Yeah, I have relatives and friends who can't afford to buy capable PCs or consoles and the only way we can play multiplayer is local multiplayer and it's usually really fun, much more fun than online multiplayer.

There is ALMOST nothing funnier than watching the giant bomb fellas playing gang beasts. Every single time I laugh endlessly when they fire it up. There was a really super epic amazing battle at the ferris wheel map that I seriously watched 20 times it made me laugh so hard. This game is the best thing and unfortunately local multiplayer sucks but this game would NOT be fun online hearing the reaction of people and seeing them escape as you chase them and go COME BACK HERE!!! and punch them into a machine.

I hope they don't change too much. I don't like double fine's art style in any of their games so I have a feeling they are going to ruin it with their style. Leave it the way it is. More content. More bugs!

Why shouldn't he? All of the links to the videos still go to Giantbomb.com... you still gotta have a premium account to watch that stuff, that site just makes it easier to find what you're looking for.

Before making this comment I clicked one of the videos and it linked to the MP4 of the content directly from the site, and in this case it wasn't premium content so I had made a mistake. So I apologise for that. I thought the Pizza Party video was premium content but I was misremembering. It's not linking to the MP4 now so maybe it was being corrected or something.

You both make valid points though I'm one of the people that @branthog is also describing. It's really, reeeeeeally tough for me to justify buying these kinds of games even though I really would love to play them because I can't have have a get together with friends, which sucks since the closest friends I have that also like to play games also don't live in the same state or country and thus, we can only play online MP games. It's just unfortunate since I would really love to introduce games like this and its ilk (e.g. Towerfall, Samurai Gunn, the Sportsfriends games) to my friends. Local MP is just not at all feasible considering all our living situations, careers, etc. These are the kind of games that DOES cater to me and my friends, and its unfortunate that we can't experience it because its local MP only.

How am I basically insulting the people this game caters to? Children are more likely to play games with other people locally, because they're kids. They have the time and are generally friends with people geographically close with them who also have the time and play a lot of games. The same goes for college kids who are in close proximity to other people who have time and play games.

I think having a local option is fantastic. I think not having an online option completely ignores a huge market of potential sales. I have skipped over plenty of great games on Steam I wanted to support, simply because I have not one time in twenty years as an adult sat down next to another person and played a video game -- and many are in the same boat as me. Adults grow apart. They have different obligations. Proximity is an issue. Time is an issue. You do not have the abundance of similar interests and opportunities that a child or kid in a dorm has.

Yep. I have maybe five friends or co-workers who still play games. None of them live within a thousand miles of me. None play on a regular basis. None of them play games on console. One of them exclusively plays MMOs. The other exclusively plays League of Legends. One mostly plays facebook games. The other two play a larger variety of games, but in more than fifteen years, we have never managed to arrange to play the same game on the same platform at the same time together. And that's online play. Getting them local? That will never ever happen.

Hell, even my own brother who lives under my roof and I would not sit down and play a game on the same system next to each other. We are fifty feet apart right this moment and the best we would do is online multiplayer. But these games don't have it, so . . .

Of course, we're not saying they have to provide that game mode, either. We're just saying that it's unfortunate they're excluding so many potential customers and that we would like to consider playing these games and can not. I think that is called "the voice of the customer" or "getting feedback" or something.. :)

Double Fine has no input whatsoever with those games only that they are just helping them publish and finish it, not necessarily change the mechanics or art style AFAIK.

@branthog: I'm an adult who works and friends who don't consider themselves gamers come over and have a few beers play local multiplayer games all the time. This influx of easy to learn, hard to master, chaotic multiplayer games has been the best canned thing to happen to the gaming industry for a very long time.

@branthog: The fact of the matter is, that people on Internet message boards never seem to grasp, is that we are not representative of the general public. I tried to buy a Jawbone Up24 at a Walmart a couple days ago and I'm telling you, it took six employees half an hour to find it because even after I pulled up the product page on Walmart.com that had the UPC code and showed it being in stock at that store right now.

The general public doesn't give a shit about technology or video games. The vast majority of my friends who play games are pretty casual about it. Call of Duty, Madden, Mass Effect, Halo, FIFA, Assassin's Creed. They especially don't give a shit about indie games; they'll immediately turn their noses up if they even suspect a game is indie. They don't want to spend a Friday night playing Gang Beasts and they definitely don't want to spend a Friday night watching a livestream of dudes play Gang Beasts.

That said, even though it's tough to rally my casual and (the few) hardcore game-playing friends together, especially since we're in different cities, I still wouldn't really want to play Gang Beasts online. TowerFall and Samurai Gunn, probably.

And besides, PS4's Share Play seems like it'll pretty much allow online play in couch co-op games anyway, even if the developers don't want it. Which is awesome.

@branthog: The other thing to consider is that online multiplayer is a significant addition for projects like this. They might well want to include online, but it could be outside their scope - I can imagine the physics being tricky over a network.

I'm also in a position where I lack friends that would have the time or interest to play locally, but I think a game like Gang Beasts would lose a lot of charm online anyway.

@branthog: Local multiplayer is the best, anyone who disagrees is simply wrong. Internet support is nice, but local is king.

The problem is that local-only eliminates a lot of these games as anything many of us will ever have a chance to play. As I have mentioned before, it's great if you're a kid (and so have friends over all the time) or if you're in college (so live in a dorm filled with people who would play), but that's a small chunk of potential audience.

Adding it in to PSN+ is great to promote it, but i think for many it winds up as a sort of "well, that's nice but what do I do with this?!" thing.
