EA Will Make All Your Star Wars Games Now

The publisher has struck a deal with Disney to grant them the exclusive license for the franchise.

Something tells me that, for a lot of you, EA was not the publisher you were looking for.
Something tells me that, for a lot of you, EA was not the publisher you were looking for.

Ever since Disney shuttered former all-things-Star Wars publisher LucasArts in the wake of its purchase of Lucasfilm, we have been left wondering who would be tasked with resuming production on the world's supply of Star Wars video games. Now we know the answer.

EA has stepped up and Jedi mind-tricked Disney (or, more likely, paid handsomely) for the exclusive license for all Star Wars games in the "core games" category. This means Disney will still have the license to produce its own games in the mobile, tablet, and online gaming categories. However, if you want to make a major console, handheld, or PC game with the words "Star" and "Wars" in the title, you'd best be working for an EA studio.

It would extra help if you worked for DICE, Visceral Games, or BioWare, as EA's announcement of the deal specifically cites these studios as the ones tasked with bringing more Star Wars video games into the world. BioWare, of course, already has experience working with the Star Wars brand, producing the original Knights of the Old Republic RPG games (though only developing the first one internally), as well as the Old Republic MMO, which is perhaps most notable for costing EA an exceptional amount of money. On a possibly related note, financial terms for this deal were not disclosed.

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. "Now, we own the exclusive rights to those dreams," he did not add, but I imagine he thought to himself at least once.

We'll bring you more on this deal as it becomes available.

I hope this doesn't mean Origin exclusives and all the terrible pre-order/DLC nickel and diming EA does. Can't wait to see them hold back lightsabers as DLC or a pre-order bonus. Different coloured blades depending on where you pre-order are coming.

I wonder if Visceral could do an interesting, dark game out of this. Merge a bounty hunter story with a Mercs 3 foundation.

Oh no, I meant that pun title was the best possible outcome. An actual game based on it would probably be turrble.

@hadestimes: Who did you have in mind? I mean EA is at least better then Activision and I couldn't see Ubisoft making the move on Star Wars. Don't get me wrong I'm not all for EA but who else do you think would have been a better choice?

If DICE gets to make Battlefront 3 and gets a break from Battlefield then I will be okay with this, despite the potential problems of EA having exclusivity over the license.

Kotor is the only star wars game I've ever cared about. It just so happens that I really care about as it's one of my favorite games. A lot of my interest of this hinges on whether Bioware makes another proper Kotor game or not. Even if they do, there's no guarantee that it will be any good since God only knows who still works at Bioware from the OG Kotor team. If their heart isn't in it, the last thing I want is some farted out half assed sequel.

The more likely outcome and motivation of this is based on the fact that a lot of Star Wars movies are coming out in the next 5-10 years assuming this whole JJ Abrams thing works out. Expect a shit load of EA made movie games with the star wars label slapped on them.

The harsh reality is that there are way more bad/mediocre star wars games than good ones. Most of them came out during the release of the prequels (1999-2005). Some of those games left a rotten taste in my mouth and I was a much bigger star wars fan then, than I am now. You can imagine my tolerance for thrown together movie games is A LOT lower these days.

Well, don't say that. Let's just wait and see what comes out of this despite what has happened with EA this past few years. Also there might be some HOT COLLAB with Johnny V in the future as a co-producer on the Disney side of things.

So, Bioware can make KOTOR 3, Dice can make Battlefront 3 and Visceral can make a new Republic Commando(They got the co-op parts down, so they could do it)

Well makes sense. I mean who else is gonna publish a star wars game. Square Enix? No they're strapped for cash and can't afford the licensing. Activision? Nope they can't make a billion dollars a year from it. Take two? Nope they'd rather make their own properties than pay a huge amount in licensing. EA's really the only choice. So between this and not having any star wars games released...decide for yourselves.

I'm just saying Criterion is part of EA, and it's a dope outfit that made some of my favorite games ever. Besides - DICE and Bioware are pretty much on top of my list of most esteemed developers making exactly my kind of games as well, so I could not be more happy about this news.

Seriously - there's no other outfit better suited than EA to deliver the experiences I want out of Star Wars games. I challenge you to come up with a better and more comprehensive match.

P.S. Remember the Lord of the Rings stuff EA did? Above and beyond what movie tie-ins usually deliver. EA can do Star Wars justice.

Just turn Battlefield into Battlefront, EA. People fighting over getting into an X-wing or Snowspeeder with the winner quickly crashing into something would be great.

New Rogue Squadron, please! <3

New Tie Fighter or no thanks.

Yes to these, but not likely. Not sure which developer steps up to tackle the franchises.

I think there are worse publishers for the brand to be under, but I don't like the idea of giving exclusive rights to any one publisher, no matter who it is. Marvel has some of the most insanely interesting properties from a video game perspective, but they've completely squandered all of their potential. Instead of making interesting video games they just cash in a quick buck whenever they can capitalize on the hype of a movie. It's very easy to see EA falling into this same trap for Star Wars.

A huttball variant with proper action gameplay? Mindblowing. Spent so much of my time in SW:TOR playing Huttball. As far as CTF modes go, it's one of the best ever.

For as questionable EA decisions were in the last few years, they still have a bunch of solid studios under them and even the issue of making games for mass market is not that bad for Star Wars. What was the last decent action game based on Star Wars? Republic Commando? A straightforward action game in that universe could be great.

I don't feel that strongly about it but there is potential for good games set in the Star Wars universe, unfortunately EA tend to produce games which do nothing for me. The exclusivity aspect makes it kind of a bummer but whatever, we probably haven't lost or gained anything of value here.

Meh, when I think of which of any of the big publishers I'd like to get the license, I don't come up with any clear winner.

To be honest, I don't even know what I want in a Star Wars game anymore - or that I want one at all. Since Mass Effect and appealing potential that Prey 2 seemed to have, I'm much more interested in developers coming up with their own sci fi IPs at this point. Star Wars has too much baggage anymore.

Are you guys all nuts? It's EA! Don't you remember, when they stole our babies and burned them before our very eyes??

I too think this could possibly be a good thing. It's not like Star Wars has anything to lose at this point. Just imagine if we can get some form of spiritual successor to Dark Forces on Frostbite? Light sabers and destructible environments seem like a match made in a galaxy far far away.

Alex, it sounds like you are daring me to make something like "Wars: The Stars".

It is a good bet that DICE is making a Battlefront style game with Frostbite, by which I mean a Star Wars skinned Battlefield game of course.

ILM worked on the rendering pipeline and assets for 1313 and I heard there was some problems getting that stuff to work right so I doubt any kind of 1313 revival would use that stuff because its way too expensive for EA to work with ILM. I could see Visceral taking the idea of 1313 and building it with their own tech (fun fact I just learned, the Dead Space engine was built on the Godfather engine).
