First Impressions: Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix

SSF2THDR is now available... so I played a bunch of it. Here's what I think so far.

"Bonjour, je m'appelle Guile."
In case you hadn't heard, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix has finally been released, with the PS3 version hitting yesterday and the 360 release out early this morning. We'll have a full review of the game in the near future, but I felt you might be interested in a few quick bits of info about the game based on my experiences.

The online totally works. Really, that might be the only piece of info you need to see. While it'll act a little funky if you're playing internationally or against people with awful connections, it feels fine to me. I'd guess that if you were counting frames, though, you'd probably notice some differences.

Maybe it's just a time of day thing, but the people I was playing last night on the PS3 version were wiping me out. Totally better than me. Now that I'm playing the 360 version, though, I'm running through most players without too much trouble. I think I've lost one match so far, maybe two. Also, I managed to get three perfect rounds in a row against one guy. Another guy's whole strategy was to pick Fei Long and just hit roundhouse over and over again. Duhhhhh.

I ran into a bug on the 360 version where the music just stopped playing during fights. Still works at the menu, but I guess I'll need to quit and restart it to get the music back.

The game lets you revert to original character graphics, original music, and original gameplay, if you want. There's also a pretty heavy menu of switches that let you turn on specific elements of the remixed gameplay, like if you'll be able to "store Honda's command throw" or not.

I thought the new artwork would bother me way more than it does. The "new art, old frames" look still seems a bit choppy, but that's by design, and it's not a big deal. Speaking of which, most of the new art is A-OK. I think the only thing I don't like is Blanka's face. Maybe that's the point.

Oh, and they totally got rid of the stupid-ass announcer that popped up in Super, and changed some of the voices, too. Guile doesn't sound totally horrible when shouting "sonic boom." They just reverted it back to the pre-Super voice. This, alone, makes the entire "remix" worthwhile.

Pretty smart changes, all told. At least that's how they feel so far. More soon.

$15 is too much for a game this old. Yes it's HD remixed and has online, but still. Should've been $10 max

Looking forward to your full review.  The online has been fantastic in the games I've played so far.  I love and agree with the move changes too.  They really did a nice job.

This is truly the new best SFII!  I honestly don't really like playing the original Super Turbo anymore shortly after starting to play this one because all of the changes are totally smart and makes the balance between the fighters much closer than they were before.  Highly recommended!

The demo for SF2HD lacks a singleplayer mode - it only has local multiplayer to try out. I don't have two controllers and nobody around here would play with me anyway so I guess I've stopped caring about SF2HD.

Good job, Capcom.

Well, considering that the 360 D-pad sucks big time, having a game thats so heavy on combination combos, its understandable that the community is much weaker. Still, I will wait a little bit more for this game, still have my hands full with many games for all the consoles atm

i bought the 360 version (i don't have a PS3).. I'm a crazy enough  Street Fighter nut to buy it with out caring about the price.. it still is a full game so I don't mind paying $15.  That and it will tide me over at least untill Street Fighter 4 comes out!

I still want to try MK vs DC though.

This is all good to hear, i was wondering what you would make of this version, glad to see its all pretty good bar a few minor things, i myself, while not a hardcore fan by any means, do find the "new art, old frames" to be a little choppy, in the fast sense.

The only thing holding me back from buying this version of SF2 is the $15 price point. I'll wait for the review to see if the new content (if you can call it that) is worth it. Maybe I should stick to SF2 on my SNES while I wait for ST4..................

If you get a Blanka with green hair, his leg hair resembles pine trees ...

Otherwise, I've been playing the 360 version all day and the rebalancing changes are great for the most part.  I was able to get some good licks in with Dee Jay, T. Hawk and Zangief, characters I wouldn't normally give much play time too.  At first I was worried the achievements would be absolutely absurd, but I've snagged all but one of the offline achievements (for those wondering - 8 offline, 4 online) and a few of them are fairly fun (such as playing as Ryu and finishing Sagat with a fierce shoryuken).  I need a good online connection to tear into the multiplayer some, but I've been playing with a few friends and we've been rocking the game pretty fierce.

The thing I would question, however, is the difficulty.  I can still beat the game and everything, but David Sirlin promised the difficulties have been tooled to where easy was easy, normal was normal, etc.  While the difficulty has been toned, even easy may still be a little frustrating to those who only casually play Street Fighter.  What is most notable about HD Remix is it was essentially built by tournament players so it mostly serves tournament players and, of course, these players can rock the CPU without a moment's hesitation.  With the difficulty and the fact most changes will only be noticeable to the competitive crowd, $15 might seem a little much for a casual player.  Of course the removal of 360 command motions and moves such as the fake hadoken are extremely noticeable, but those who don't follow the game will doubtedly pick up on tweaks such as the removal of random time windows for shoryuken inputs, retoolings of moves such as Guile's roundhouse flash kick and recoveries of Blanka's rolling attacks.

The game is indeed worth $15, however, it just doesn't seem like most people understand what they are purchasing - the rebalanced mode has officially been labeled by Capcom bloggers as a true "sequel" to Street Fighter II.  The game is much more than Super Street Fighter II Turbo with Udon graphics and the developer has gone the extra mile to incorporate every possible competitive facet it could (double blind character selecting online, character rebalancings, notifications of dip switch settings to see if anyone's buffing certain characters, networking tweaks stemming from the beta, hitbox displays in the training mode, etc.).  If you love competitive fighting games, you should really pick this one up as this certainly won't be a game people stop playing online after one week.

As for the control issue, the version is developed with a more leinent command input timing window and I've found the analog sticks to be very sufficient for the most part.  My major hangup is in the dragon punch motion where I can't get it to pull off about 1 or 2 times out every 10 times I go for it.  When both fighters' health meters are low and you're in a scramble, anxiety might up the ratio of not being up to pull off a move, but, overall, I've found it to be quite satisfactory, even on the 360's brutal (for fighters and rhythm games) controller.

Okay I just read all of that.  I can't get it here in the UK because of the ANNOYING delay, so please stop talking!! :'( :'(

Damn, I seriously don't think I have EVER been this anxious before.  I can't buy off the US PS3 store because I don't have a VISA, Mastercard or and American Express, so I have to wait.  I am more anxious to play this than I was when I had to wait ALL DAY to play Spore, while I just thought about it for 8 hours in work.  More anxious than when LBP got delayed for two weeks as well.  I hope this comes out tomorrow for the weekly Thursday release, it would make my fucking week!  This game sounds so amazing that it just makes me want to cry! :'(

Seriously, what were you gonna do with those extra five dollars?
This is the crux of the bitching behind Braid and Castle Crashers as well.
Hey, don't get me wrong, I would LOVE for it to be 800 points, but these are premium games which had a whole lot more work put into them than that Shrek game or the Frogger port.

Not sure how to quote as this is my first post but I'm living in New Zealand so all you chaps in Europe that are suffering from the dreaded delays should sign up at http://www.entropay.com/ - it hooks you up with an online credit card of sorts that can be used on the US store and can be topped up with any other credit card. Enjoy.

15 bucks isn't too much, if I could spare it. Good thing I have Persona 3 FES to play. It will keep me busy well into the finanial crisis is over it seems with it's ~100h playtime (including the bonus content) and re-playability.

Whoever at Capcom who thought it would be a good idea to release a trial demo in which to play requires you to have 2 controllers needs a swat in the ear.

Sounds good! however from what I've heard Capcom might not implement the netcode in Street Fighter IV because it's such a system hogger, it being  similiar to GGPO and all. Hopefully they'll work harder ;)

I'll get this one on PS3 (makes a change) just because I played the 360 demo and I couldnt pull off a dragon punch consistently with either the stick or dpad.  As mentioned on the bombcast If I had an arcade stick id prob pick it up on 360.

ummm... you should have given a review on its official page than putting on here, cause really people look at these comments for maybe a day and go onto the next blog.

to Jeff: wow you are the only person in GB right now... wait I also saw a Ryan post?  You two just added one more point to your "awesome" level IMO. You dudes are definitely the voices I can trust most in the critic industry and am glad you are keeping it up right now for your Giant Bomb fans.  Happy turkey day :)!

Bought it, love it - would've appreciated the demo to have a solo game instead of forcing you to try it with a friend or just an empty controller though.

Yeah I tried that, but it doesn't accept my Solo card anyway, because I'm under 18. Also, Sony found a way to stop people from using Entropay a while back.
