Free And Paid DLC In The Works For Magicka

Also, more bug fixes!

Post-launch support for PC indie darling Magicka has been aggressive since the game's bug-riddled debut on Steam. Arrowhead Game Studios has dropped (count 'em) 10 patches for the action RPG in less than a month. But, surprisingly, this heavy-duty approach to patching isn't getting in the way of DLC plans--extra content is indeed on the way.

In a recent interview with Big Download, publisher Paradox Interactive’s Mattias Lilja said that Arrowhead is split in a way that allows for one team to create DLC and another to continue throwing out patches to fix and tweak the core game, all without sucking up each other's resources.

Oh, the content in pipe? Look forward to some free stuff mixed in with some paid downloads.

"Yeah, the release plan includes both free and paid DLC. The Arrowhead team asked if they could be a bit daring when it comes to the DLC and we told them yes," Lilja said in the interview. "They really did go off the reservation with some stuff, and I bet my Wizard's survival kit most gamers will love it. The team is set up in such a way that some guys can keep patching the game while others produce DLC, without getting in the way of each other or stealing resources from one another," he said.

Another tasty bit of news via this interview is this little factoid: Magicka has now sold over 200,000 units. Not too bad, eh?

Ah - my one and only time I I'll ever try.

But seriously: I look forward to more Magicka DLC. Paid DLC.... unless it's a ton of more levels, count me out. Or new elements.

@EOT: Sorry if that was a bit obnoxious; I panicked. But even after reading the article, I think my question still stands at least.

Great news, I love this game!

It was an astounding mesh on release, but the almost daily patches have turned it into a very enjoyable co-op experience.

Looking forward to it... I S-Ranked Magicka over the weekend and still want to play more.

The latest bug is the best one yet... Chapter 3 is skipped entirely (something they added in to quickly fix a bug in the Chapter 3 boss got released in the patch).

The game itself is very interesting to say the least, but I'll wait until the normal game plays as it should before even trying the DLC.

Really awesome that these guys have found success.   A student game gone right... unlike some I have seen or worked on.

10 patches is a little embarrassing for a game this early on. granted, its great they're supporting it but it's like they just released the game before it was done and just didn't stop working on it. why not wait til its actually done before release. or warn that its a buggy beta or something. but good lord, the amount of bugs in day one was awe-inspiring.  thankfully there's some really solid gameplay ideas

TLDR; opening up preorders with a beta attached would've been much more successful than releasing a buggy-as-hell game

A friend and I were playing it non stop for the first few days, but then we hit chapter 4 and he kept crashing on the end boss and we had to do the entire fucking chapter 4 times before we finally gave up after it crashed at the exact same spot over and over. I tried to solo it then we could load at the start of chapter five, but then it crashed on me every single time about 2 min past the spot he kept crashing. He had to play it from Chapter 1 single player just so we could get past the dam thing.

Then in Chapter 6 I was the one always crashing. Then level 9. Always at the end fucking boss too so you would always have to play through the entire fucking chapter. Fuck god dam this game has a horrendous save system.

Fuck this game. I deleted it and pray nightly that the monsters who created this thing, and the stomach ulcer I got from playing it, die a horrible painful death.

you all realize these guys basically got 2 million bucks at the very least from all the purchases so far? they are more successful than notch, and have been rolling out updates and patches more often then notch, so bravo they know how to support the game they launched at the very least

In this game I am a wizard.
That is all I have to say about that.

Or, wait, what I really meant to say was, the game is pretty good and more content for good games is always welcome.

What the heck is the correlation here? Notch has yet to release the game that you're talking about, and because of how jacked it was when it came out, Magicka has, so far, been rolling out updates and patches far more often than pretty much any game. Hey! This game got more patches than Mass Effect 2!

Actually, I lied. Minecraft got at least an update every week for the first year or so of its development, so that's quite a lot of updates right there. Because when you're working on an unfinished game, you're bound to add stuff to said game fairly often. Which also happens to be why Magicka got so much support in its early life. Because it wasn't quite finished when they decided to put it out.

I guess I'm really just trying to ask why you're acting like that's a good thing...

It's great that they are thinking about DLC, but they should really make the game work first. They should also add some sort of scaling graphics so that it will run on lower end systems. It's not like it's a technical marvel.

Really looking forward to the DLC, can't wait. As for the bugs people keep posting about I can't really say I've seen a lot of them, had one two crashes but it's not like the game ain't working.

I'm one achievement away from an S-Rank and my game has crashed maybe five-six times, max. That's in 20 hours of playtime and something like seven or eight playthroughs. Sucks for people complaining about constant crashes and bad netcode I guess, but I've had little to no problem and the game is the most fun I've had in a while. I'll gladly buy more from these guys just to support them.
