Game of the Year 2017 Day One: Old, Disappointing, Shopkeepers, and Looks

It's time to get this show on the road with our first four categories, a batch of top 10s, and more!

Welcome, friends, to Giant Bomb's Game of the Year presentation for 2017. This year we've got our full podcast deliberations in both audio and video form, top 10 lists from your friends at Giant Bomb Dot Com and your other friends from around the world of video gaming, and a little extra fun to keep things moving. This is the first day of awards and we'll be going for five days, so be sure to check back tomorrow for another set of stuff.

We more or less put everything up around the same time so you can decide how you want to take this all in. This year we'll be breaking the video version of the podcast up into its individual categories, which might be handy if you want to skip around or miss categories about story or other things you might not be ready to hear. The audio version will send you straight through, as usual.

We'll also have top 10 lists up from Ben Pack, Jeff Bakalar, Mary Kish, and more.

Here's today funtime video for people who like to have a good time:

We're going to put some space between here and there, though, so that people who don't want to see the specifics before listening or watching the deliberations can get out now. Don't scroll past the following images unless you're here to read about the winners!

OK, here we go!

2017's Old Game of the Year

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

No Caption Provided

The original release of Mario Kart 8 was one of the best games to come out of the Wii U’s limited library, so it was no surprise when it was just as good on the Switch. With quality of life upgrades giving you the option to auto-accelerate and auto-steer, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is even more accessible for young folks first getting into the series, or more experienced players who are just tired of getting hand cramps.

The Switch’s portability makes it great to play for quick sessions on-the-go as well as longer sessions with friends. It’s still the same game that won us over in 2014, but the included DLC courses, the 200cc mode, and a newly fleshed-out (and dramatically improved) Battle Mode all offer a fresh challenge for players looking to hop back into their favorite kart racer.

Runners-up: Windjammers, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Best Shopkeeper

Emil (NieR:Automata)

No Caption Provided

"Every day's a sale

Every sale's a win

Better buy now or you'll cry all night

Every day's a sale

Every sale's a win

Every day is great when you're me"

Blink and you might miss Emil. The young boy made his debut as a cursed ancient weapon in the original Nier, but in Automata he plays a different role--shopkeeper. He’s a bumbling chaotic robot scooter of sorts who haphazardly sells items and costumes to our android heroes. The combination of his smiling face and his theme blasting on repeat when he arrives to sell his wares offer a breath of fresh air in an otherwise dingy and dark overworld.

Runners-up: Falcon Ron (Pyre), Porkrind (Cuphead)

Most Disappointing Game

Mass Effect: Andromeda

No Caption Provided

As defined, this category is based on the gulf between our expectations for a game and the reality of it, and there has never been and may never be a more appropriate game in that context than Mass Effect: Andromeda. Think about the impact the Mass Effect series has had up to now, all the stories told and themes explored. Think about the vast galaxy it created, full of fascinating aliens and intercultural struggles. Think about a story arc so grand that it was (mostly) successfully told across three entire games. Think about how deeply and personally every player embodied their own Shepard. Think about what Mass Effect has meant to so many people.

Now think about a game that misunderstands or discards most of the best things about Mass Effect, a game built on the worst tendencies of open-world design, a game that launched in a state so technically compromised that it felt like it was on the verge of collapsing in on itself; in other words, a game so disappointing that EA has now indefinitely shelved what was once the most exciting franchise in video games. While we're on the subject, "congrats" to EA for running the category this year. Heck of a showing.

Runners-up: Need for Speed Payback, Star Wars Battlefront II

Best Looking Game

Cuphead

No Caption Provided

Cuphead looks like nothing we’ve ever seen before in video games. Sure, it’s paying homage to a bygone era of animation, but the team has also managed to make something exceptionally unique. It’s one of those rare examples that works so well it’s almost hard to believe and makes you constantly want to show it off to anyone who hasn’t it seen it in motion. All the bosses have multiple transformations that seem to be waging some internal war of creative one-upmanship to be the most visually audacious. Even through to the end of the game you are treated to a barrage of new and inspired characters and animations.

As a complete package Cuphead is truly a marvel to behold. Whether it’s the overly expressive animations on the bosses or the simple idle bopping of Cuphead and Mugman, everything feels cohesive, curated, and produced with the most extreme attention to detail. Even if you’re not a fan of the game itself, it’s hard to not stop and stare at the truly arresting visuals that Cuphead has on offer.

Runners-up: Horizon Zero Dawn, Destiny 2

Is it me or are certain portions of the podcast repeating?

I mean, not that I'm complaining. This one of the best gifts I've gotten.

I feel Battlefront 2 was more disappointing than Andromeda for a released to early 4th game from a somewhat new development team the (PC version) ran fine, and was still the best Star Trek game you’re gonna find since Mass Effect 3. On the other hand Battlefront II dropped the ball in all the ways

@awkwardl0ser: The key component to most disappointing though is dashed expectations and Andromeda was a new Mass Effect of all things.

Where Battlefront 2 seemingly did nothing but create the sinking feeling of dread well advance of release.

Listening now. The mention of Horizon during the most disappointing talk. Oof. It's my GotY so something tells me this does not bode well for upcoming discussions. It's going to be painful to listen to. The gameplay is what feels sooooo good about Horizon, which is the opposite of what Brad is saying. Finally a game that did bow combat well and was fun.

No real complaints here, (mario kart 8 always looked fun, and there wasn’t a real huge game that sticked with the staff from last year to this year)

I Just kinda hope persona 5 at least gets a mention in best looking category when they are narrowing the list (or at least in Best Styleeeeee)

I think it was not the most disappointed because Battlefront 2 was a car crash you could see coming from far away where mass effect was sorta a bomb out of nowhere not to mention the horrible technical difficulties that game had including the worst facial animations since Unity.

Completely agree. Brad's disillusionment with Bungie/Mass Effect seems to be leaking into his opinions on everything ... to be honest, he sounds a little bit like Jeff on this, and I hope he hits his stride on HZD. My only real knock on Horizon was the ending, I was hoping for a little more of a God of War type robot sequence, but, yeah, what a great look/story.

Watch Danny O'Dwyer's NoClip documentary on HZD if you haven't yet, it's fantastic!

Same here. Not only that, Horizon has one of my favorite stories in gaming ever. The sense of wonder, "what happened to the world!?" and the reveals where perfectly paced and spaced out and managed to surprise me and my friends at every turn. This and Yakuza 0 are tied for my personal GOTY.

Every time I've tried to go back to Horizon I just stall out a few hours in. It looks great, I like the story and feel like I would continue to throughout... but actually playing it is just no fun at all.

Yep, the controversy surrounding it after the character price adjustment is one of the most overblown things I've seen in recent years. Not to mention the fact that most of the folks doing the complaining didn't seem to even understand the concept of the Star Cards, their relation to the loot crates, and how they don't have much impact on actual progression. It wasn't much of an issue on release, and isn't even a factor now.

I imagine this is an issue specific to myself but the podcast isn't in my premium rss feed — is it failing to show for anybody else? It of interest weeks Bombcast fail to appear in the feed too.

Oh yes I am using Pocket Casts on android and it has been working fine for over 2 years.

Because everyone expected a garbage fire because the loot box stuff and all that came early.

Almost finished. More Horizon hate ;_; I remember standing in a section of lush forest at night, the glow of the moonlight coming through the tree foliage. An eerie fog hovering in the air. I think there were lightning bugs but I can't quite remember. Game is unbelievable looking. SO good, that I actually used a screenshot I took as my PS4 background, which I never do, because it's usually cheesy.

Edit: Just realized they did video versions of the categories. Doh! Just finished podcast though.

Is this a Bob Ross painting?
Is this a Bob Ross painting?

@postal_pat Two guesses: GotY podcasts don't seem to be premium so I assume they wouldn't be automatically added unless they did some back end thing for these? Or, as a fellow Pocketcasts user, there have been one or two times where feeds randomly stopped working. Probably because someone changed something on the back end. When this happened, redoing the uhh.. rss feed address or whatever. Updating the key thing or whatever would get it working again.

Could not disagree more. The art direction and level design is one of the best parts about Destiny. Even the lackluster DLC had you fighting a mini-raid inside a planet-eating ship, and I personally think those particular environments are some of the best-looking and contend with Horizon and BotW. https://imgur.com/gallery/hdgyg

Considering the only people to really play P5 were Alex and Ben, I don't expect it to win anything, not when both of them are much more enamored with the horny robot game in almost every category where P5 would would even be considered.

Giant Bomb traded their A+ production parodies that were the highlight of past holiday wrapups for an explosion of crowded video podcasts and, I suspect, rehashes of last year's group features.

Guess this whole master plan of splitting the site across the country and doubling of staff had some unintended consequences.

@the_lord_fagan: give them time - they just brought a new production person on board, and with all the podcasts, it probably blew their production schedule out the window. In the end, it's still entertaining and a change of pace.

The only quibble I have is the missing years of excellence counter. I'm hoping it'll be back for 60.

@efesell: In reality, definitely not. A look at the front page of Steam on any given day this year would be proof enough of that. The joke was just too easy to pass up.
