Gamestop Gets into Publishing via Partnership with Insomniac Games

Song of the Deep will release this Spring thanks to an unexpected move by the gaming retailer.

No Caption Provided

With the gaming industry’s slow but sure shift towards digital offerings in recent years, it should come as no surprise that brick-and-mortar retailer GameStop has been interested in expanding its standard business model. The company purchased Flash gaming portal Kongregate in 2010, and has opened over 70 SimplyMac stores that buy and sell used phones. GameStop’s most recent move is an unexpected one, as it’s working with Insomniac Games to publish the developer's upcoming game, Song of the Deep.

GameSpot reports that Insomniac fully owns Song of the Deep’s intellectual property rights and will have creative control over the side-scrolling adventure, which sees a fisherman’s daughter named Merryn set sail to rescue her missing father. It’s a small project, with about 15 Insomniac staffers preparing it for a Q2 launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The game will be released digitally on these platforms, but will also be offered as a physical disc exclusively in GameStop locations. Additionally, the retailer plans on bolstering its launch with a line of merchandise featuring toys and Pop Vinyl figures. As the nation’s leading game retailer, GameStop controls some prime real estate when it comes to visible gaming marketing. Now that they’re experimenting with the publishing game, they’ll have full control over how much visibility their own project receives in their stores.

It'll be interesting to see how hard GameStop leverages this built-in advantage, as publishers--who tend to have to negotiate for that space with every release--could potentially feel slighted if the retailer is utilizing its limited shelf space to push their own title. It's hard to imagine any studio getting significant marketing space (much less a full line of toys and other merchandise) in GameStop stores with a "low-budget passion project," but Insomniac now has this unique advantage.

On the other hand, it's understandable to see GameStop throwing things at the wall in recent years. Putting their fingers in their ears and pretending that physical media will always be the world's preferred format would be ridiculous, and they have to look into other means of making money if they hope to survive.

It’s a weird, but understandable move for the retailer, and time will tell if publishing their own game will help extend the company’s relevancy in an increasingly digital world. GameStop’s stock price has dropped precipitously in recent months, and the future will likely be grim for the company unless they find a sustainable new business model in the near future. Whether that business model lies in Flash games or used phones or publishing partnerships (or a combination of those) remains to be seen, but the folks at GameStop seem intent on surviving the rise of digital gaming in any way they can.

I don't even think its just that people are switching to digital more and more. Part of it has to be the usually not great shopping experience they give you. Its much less of a hassle to just buy physical media from amazon. At least that's why I don't shop at Gamestop.

I will hand it to Gamestop in their quest to stay relevant for as long as possible before the crushing weight of our inevitable all-digital future becomes too much. I still don't like to be in those stores for any serious length of time.

And with the Prime deal for physical games, it makes even more sense to go through Amazon more.

Never heard of that game til after reading this so I went to go check out the trailer. Looks interesting. I could totally go for that kind of game especially after playing "The Aquatic Adventure of the Last Human". Plus I like Insomniac Games so sure why not.

er... huh!

Insomniac?

@danryckert do you think this deal has anything to do with the performance of Fuse and Sunset Overdrive? Obviously nobody (and nobody's dog) cared for Fuse, and while Sunset was well reviewed it seemed that the, uh, sun... set... er.. rather quickly on the internet's interest in that game.

I don't want to read too much into this but I'm very curious now if Insomniac sees this as a step up, a sideways step, or a step down. I suppose this could be a great deal for them because GameStop has so much visibility? Maybe this is a cash influx to set up this smaller team? Has there always been a mini-team at Insomniac (and they made Fuse??).

I'm so curious about this because of Insomniac in particular. You'd think they could get into bed with pretty much any third party publisher so why's the juice so sweet at the G Stop nowhatimsayin Dan?

@danryckert: I imagine the collective pants-shitting that occurred at Gamestop when Amazon announced their 20% off deal helped to precipitate this move into the publishing space. Or at least, it accelerated it.

Retailers shouldn't be publishers.

The game will be released digitally on these platforms, but will also be offered as a physical disc exclusively in GameStop locations.

And that is an example why.

I've followed Insomniac Games just about everywhere (except for the PS3, though that purchase was out of my hands) so I guess it's time to get over my fear of underwater levels?

@kerse: from what I've gathered, it's a new program to compete against Gamestop and Best Buy, which has a similar deal.

I don't hate this idea...but games sold exclusively at a retailers are a bit weird. Then again wasn't all that Sneak King stuff sold in just Burger Kings (I could be wrong). I guess people will be selling these games on eBay anyway.

Probably mean to say, but won't GameStops be dead and gone soon? Reselling iPhones won't last long either if that is all you do even if you repair stuff as well. This just seems like kickin' the can down the road.

This is definitely strange, time will tell how it works out.

I'm curious about this game though! Give me more metroidvania. What if Insomniac someday made a Ratchet and Clank themed game in the style...?

Store-exclusive pre-order content was already a sort of iffy thing and I'm not at all sure that I'm fine with a retailer being this closely involved on the publishing side of things. Though it probably won't happen, I can see things getting really ugly if this idea actually takes off and more retailers get involved on a larger scale; GameStop and other retailers might very well be willing to shell out a significant amount of money to cover the ever-increasing costs of game development if it means grabbing the exclusive rights to physically distribute something along the lines of a AAA-tier game.

I doubt any developer out there would ever agree to something like 'no digital distribution period' regardless of the funds offered, but if this is successful I don't think it would be outright of the realm of possibility for digital launches to be delayed. We're already in the realm of 'temporary exclusivity' for console launches, so extending this concept to physical vs digital launches doesn't sound too far-fetched to me if the funds and profits are there.

No matter how this plays out, I honestly feel sorry for anyone over at Game Informer since they'll probably be under a ton of needless stress and pressure from higher-ups over this.

This is a weird path Gamestop decided to go down. At least the game looks like it could be worth playing. I'll be curious to see how well this pans out.

This seems as weird as the Kongregate purchase. Think Geek at least made more sense. I think it's even weirder that it's with Insomniac though.

On a side note, I actually don't mind my local Gamestop. Quality of a Gamestop seems really luck of the draw, I've had some real shitty experiences too, but the one near me currently and the one that was next door to me when I was going to school have both been pretty good overall.

@geraltitude: Insomniac has two offices (one in CA and the other in NC) and to my knowledge one of them (the NC one) focuses on smaller games such as their mobile games and I think they also might have worked on their PSP titles? I don't think they worked on Fuse but I could be wrong. I would assume it's their NC office working on this title but I'm not really sure.

Gamestop has earned so much "good will" from me through experiences in their store and their policies in general, that I can't wait to ignore this game just like I ignore their store.

Too bad for me though, I would have liked to try Insomniacs game, honestly.... but not enough to break my nearly decade old ( just over 9 years, now) boycott of Gamestop.

I was just in my local GameStop yesterday to trade a game in and get some Disney Infinity stuff that was on sale. Was also checking to see if they had a couple old, used games on sale for cheap. Got everything I wanted and one other thing was really cheap. Decent experience overall. I was the only one in the store and there was two workers in there. I saw an ad for this game playing on the tv behind the register and the workers were at one point talking about how GameStop is making a game. This was before I saw this article so I didn't know anything about it. Looks like the website for GameStop is already taking pre-orders for a Summer 2016 launch window with a price of 15.00. Glad to see they are allowing it to be sold digitally since that's most likely how I will buy it. Seems a bit dumb and wasteful to sell the 15.00 game on disc though. Makes me think they are going to end up having a lot of copies of that game around kind of like used copies of Sneak King are still everywhere.

I'm more surprised that Gamestop is going to be selling merch for this game. It seems like such a small, niche game to be setting up Pop figures and whatnot.

Don't get me wrong - the game looks amazing and right up my alley - but I would never expect to see merchandise for something like this, let alone it selling very well.
