Ghosts Of E3 Past: Metal Gear Solid 2

As another crazy Metal Gear announcement looms, take a look back at the grandaddy of all crazy Metal Gear-related E3 moments.

OK, this is it: The number one most exciting/mindblowing/memorable/your-superlative-goes-here moment of any E3, ever (except for maybe the first time I descended the escalator at the 1997 Atlanta E3 and realized, holy crap, I want to do this stuff for a living). It's the epic Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty reveal trailer from E3 2000, the grandaddy of all tentpole E3 announcements since time immemorial. Remember how incredible this was, nine years ago?

(Lower quality version with the original subtitles here.)

Nevermind how much of a letdown you may or may not consider the actual game to have been. Let's just bask in the spectacle, shall we?

And what a spectacle it was. Here's an abbreviated version of a documentary Konami made, released only in Japan, that chronicled the game's E3 unveiling and the ludicrous amount of excitement it generated. Look at these throngs of people clogging up the show floor walkways. You couldn't go anywhere near the Konami booth that year without running straight into an immovable wall of humanity. I love all the dropping jaws and looks of astonishment. (And can anyone confirm if that's former GameFan editor Nick Rox with his mouth hanging open at the 4:00 mark?)

I'm certainly curious to see what Kojima Productions has going on with the Metal Gear franchise this year, but nothing can top this MGS2 trailer. At the time, no other game had looked quite so crazy or amazing, and these days, everything kind of looks crazy and amazing. The bar is a lot higher, you know.

What would it take at next week's E3 to get you this pumped up?

Ah, those were the days. The music from that game still holds up too. Let's see if Konami can match it this year.

The next-gen is all about destructible fruit, and I remembered the main theme the most from that trailer. That theme is really awesome.

I remember this one.  I think it was the first E3 I paid attention to.  To get me pumped up, I'd love to see the return of some of my favorite franchises in lower-key announcements.  If they announced a new Jagged Alliance or Silent Storm, you'd find chunks of my blown mind in Tahiti.  Beyond that, a new Halo, Resistance, F-Zero, or a console Suikoden would get me jazzed.

@Brad: "What would it take at next week's E3 to get you pumped up?"

-SMT: Persona 5
-Wii HD announcement (bah I know its like 12390850712 years away, but still...)
-Legend of Zelda 2 for Wii
-The next Metroid IP
-A new 360/PS3 Castlevania title (no more Judgement fighter style nonsense please.  i want solid IGA-of-old business!)
-Capcom vs. SNK 3

i'm sure none of these will happen this year, but whatever..  those are about the only things that would give me a solid pants tenting  =/

I've never seen that before (I wasn't quite as interested in games back then as I am now, and I certainly wasn't into MG at all). I've very glad to finally have. Hell, I didn't even know about it until today. I feel like I've been under a rock. Thanks, Shoemaker.

Oh man, the awesomeness of this trailer only made the game that much more of a let down. I didnt know what MGS was back then but then I saw this, I saw the revolution the PS2 would be, though in hindsight, I love my dreamcast more.  But then when the game came out, I thought to myself, fuck!!!! No wonder they just showed the beginning, we have to play as this fucking Pussy named Raiden?  And they dont even say the name like in Mortal Kombat, they have to pussify it.  Its fucking RAY-DEN, not RIGH-DEN.  Assholes.

It is righ-den. Only in English the vowels are fucked up, i.e., in other languages the 'a' sounds like 'ah'. R - eh - ih - den is incorrect.

The same for Ninja Gaiden. G - ah - ih - den.

As for the game itself, it had plenty of flaws, but none of those flaws have to do with Raiden. The plot was one of the worst ever told in videogame, the gameplay itself was old and incredibly stupid (just a reedition of the first mgs, with the difference that you could actually justify it in the PS1 or NES days because of lack of resources, but in the PS2 it was unjustifiable), the bosses were retarded (vampires? magic? fat man with roller skates?), the ending was even worse than the plot itself (the image of the snake jumping into the sea after liquid escaped is hilarious, what was he going to do? Drag the metal gear to land with the power of his will and muscles?).

The game was bad, but it had nothing to do with Raiden.

Ah I remember this and how excited everyone was. Those really were the days.

As for what would get me excited at this years E3:
-Guild Wars 2 game play ( I know it's not happening since Aion isn't out yet, but I can dream)
-SMT: Persona 5
-Mirrors Edge 2
-Portal 2
-HL2: Episode 3
-New Zelda for the Wii
-New Star Fox in the vein of Star Fox 64 for the Wii
-New F-Zero for the Wii
-New Metroid for the Wii
-New 2D Metroid for the DS
-New Super Mario Bros 2 for the DS (game so doesn't exist, but I can always hope)
-Battlefield Bad Company 2 single player demo
-Halo: ODST demo
-Gears of War 3 announcement
-New IP from Kojima
-Next Gen Lost Vikings for PS3 & 360 (I know a new lost vikings will never happen, but I can still dream)

Some things that would make me excited would be

  • Remakes of all the MGS games for the PSP, except with comic cut-scenes instead of 3-D ones so the games would still run well. (So not happening, ever.)
  • A Bully PSP game (dude, they ported GTA to the PSP with good results, so why not port Bully too?)
  • Metal Gear Solid 4 Xbox 360 port
  • If a new Leisure Suit Larry game would be there I would LOL, especially after the most recent one (Box Office Bust) sucked so much.

Yeah I remember this well. MGS2 was overhyped to the max for like 2 or so years straight it coverd to death and then you played it and wow it did not live up to that hype at all. Ok game, but not great that was for sure.

What would make this upcoming E3 top that MGS2 announcement, for me?

Imagine, if you will, familiar Zelda music rising on a black screen. Soon, the darkness is broken by the edge of a rising sun, and the music is joined by the sound of beating hooves.

And then, from the side of the screen, comes Link, on Epona, gussied up graphics-wise to better take advantage of the power of the Wii. The camera follows him on his desperate charge across the fields of Hyrule--

--until he's knocked off his horse by a cannonball--

--Link leaps off Epona, who whinnies in fright as she tumbles to the ground--

--the hero hits the ground rolling, quickly getting to his feet, sword in hand--

--and the camera circle-pans into his head, and suddenly, it's first-person Wii Motion Plus Zelda BAM IN YOUR FUCKING FACE.

Insert jism here.

thanks for posting that brad.  i've never seen the dvd content until now.  my mind is fried after watching that again.

like i said before a gaming magazine was writing about the death of E3 during that whole format change a few years ago.  they asked a bunch of devs what they're most memorable moment were and about 9 out of 10 said The MGS2 trailer was their most memorable.  i was happy and relieved when i read that bc i thought i was the only nutcase that felt that way.

i was lucky enough to have attended that year and there was a big difference watching there in person vs. on the computer at home.  after watching that epic trailer, i was numb, in awe, had cold goosebumb arms, and yes a little teary-of-joys eyed.  it was the perfect blend of sight and sound.  the mysterious build up, a few nuggets for people that played the games in the series, the score, and the now trademark Kojima gun fights.  i get pumped for shootouts and Kojima really knows how to put those gun fight scenes together.

it was also the first and last time i ever made a shaky cam video of gameplay trailer/footage.  yes we had a family camcorder and my parents wanted to make it about family moments like graduations, bbqs, get togethers etc.  i was like, forget that man!  i'm going to take this thing to E3 to record a video journal and videogame related material.  as expected my parents weren't too pleased.  in the end i just made a bunch of VHS copies and give it too friends so they can share in the goodnes.

i don't know if there's anything that can compare to this in terms of excitement.  in the past it's only been kojima's own material that was somewhat competitive.  i was pretty excited seeing that half-life 2/Source engine tech demo/trailer for the first time.

i think what would get me pumped up next week is one of those unknowns running in new tech.  that and persona 5.

it still is one hell of a trailer!

I remember watching that OVER AND OVER!!! And the then I downloaded the song and put it on one of about a million CD mixes I made.....shit...I feel old saying I used to have CD, and even cassete mixtapes. that stuff is like ancient now, its all about MP3 players now.

Oh and uh, it totally lived up to that trailer for me. MGS2 remains one my most memorable gaming experiences to date. I loved that game dude.
And seriously, we need more music like that in the beginning of that trailer in films and MGS games, they hinted at it a little bit in MGS4, and everytime they did (i think its like a sax or something) I was OH I LOVE THAT!
