On our final day of Game of the Year deliberations, we came to some of the biggest conclusions of 2016. Who's the best at protecting the payload? What story grabbed us more than any other? Most importantly, what is the worst and the best game of the year? Find out below.

Overwatch Character of the Year

Reinhardt

There are a lot of great Overwatch characters, sure. Some have their funny little magic tricks, some are oh-so-angsty-and-scary, and some like to sit in one spot and just shoot at things. There’s only one character, though, that is there to move you to the point, capture it, and let you forever hold it. That character is Reinhardt. Watch as Soldier 76s and McCrees literally lay down and die as they see it relentlessly marching across the map, an army in tow. Conversely, as you approach the objective and see an opposing Reinhardt you know it’s time to rethink that head-on assault. Rip-tire? No problem for a well-aimed Fire Strike. Exploding D.Va? Let’s just Charge and push her away from all our little friends. High noon? Big shield. I could on and on, except about Earthshatter, that one… well, the man needs to have some limits to his greatness... I suppose. Do your friends a favor, learn and play Bastion… so I can destroy you with Reinhardt.

Best Story

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

No Caption Provided

Naughty Dog has shown that it's more than capable of penning a great video game story, most notably in The Last of Us. During the Uncharted series, their work has been impressive in terms of dialogue, but most of the characters and overall story beats felt like typical adventure fare. With Uncharted 4, the studio finally made these characters feel like human beings, more often during low-key moments than during bombastic action sequences.

Twitter may have loved the Crash Bandicoot bonus during the chapter with Nathan and Elena at home, but the dynamic between the now-married couple does more of a service toward the game as a whole. They discuss Nathan's "retirement" in believable terms, with the excellent facial capture helping to sell Elena's desire to keep her husband out of harm's way.

Human moments like this are found throughout A Thief's End. From Nathan's reunion to his brother, to the betrayal Elena feels when she discovers that Nathan has lied to her, to the fitting epilogue, it's the well-told story that feels newer to the series than any gameplay mechanic or setpiece moment. Sure, there's also the story of a sniveling antagonist and a pirate treasure, but for the first time, the story of Nathan and those close to him was the real standout of an Uncharted game.

Runners-up: DOOM, Firewatch

Worst Game

Soviet Monsters: Ekranoplans

The subjects of Soviet Monsters: Ekranoplans are undeniably cool: gigantic, real-world quasi-hovercraft that look like what Hideo Kojima would make with Kerbal Space Program. Too bad everything about the game is as drab as a Stalingrad apartment complex and about as functional as a Trabi. You can pick from a long list of ammo types and crew members to take with you on your missions, but good luck determining if any of that makes a difference. There are 27 missions in the game, but unless you’re a part of some secret Soviet telepathy program, you’ll have no idea what to do. Oh, is the “Ground Effect” light in your cockpit illuminated? The entire concept this game hinges on? Press it. See if anything happens. No? Exactly. This game has more bugs than Siberia in summer. I’d rather stand in a breadline.

Best Game

Hitman

You'd have been forgiven if you weren't over the moon at the initial announcement of a new Hitman game. 2012's Hitman: Absolution seemed to forget what made the series fun to begin with, opting for a more straightforward experience instead of the possibility-filled sandboxes of previous entries. Fans were already worried that the series was heading in the wrong direction, and even more eyebrows were raised when IO Interactive delayed the new game and announced at the last minute that it would be switching to an episodic structure. Signs of development turmoil were starting to pop up, and an already skeptical fan base began to temper their expectations.

Little did we know that the new Hitman would be one of the best entries yet (if not the best), and that its episodic nature would work wonders. New locations were released on a regular basis, and we found ourselves coming back each time we had a new playground to explore and cause chaos in. Elusive targets became can't-miss opportunities -- we had to try our hand at these limited time contracts whenever they appeared. If the full game had been released all at once, we may have burnt out on these tense, detailed, open-ended maps if we played them end-to-end. With the new business model, Hitman stayed at the forefront of our minds for the entirety of 2016.

A good business model doesn't mean much if we didn't have fun playing the game. Thankfully, Hitman excels in all of the areas that the series has done right in the past. Everything just feels better this time, as well. Its controls and mechanics aren't perfect and missions sometimes involve the occasional bug, but it's a smoother experience overall than its ever been before. Possibilities seem endless thanks to the wide variety of outfits and implements of assassination. The amount of trouble you can get into is truly impressive, as is the way the game allows you to miraculously slip away from it all if you play your cards right.

2016 was filled with huge debuts, finales, and resurrections, but the surprise success of Hitman had us talking, sweating, cursing, and laughing more than any other game this year.

Agreed. There must be a name for the psychological effect of not picking the obvious winner. It happens all the time. "Well... Violet is clearly the best ballerina here, so let's give the award to Susan."

WTF guys?

FTFY. Seriously though, their reasoning was pretty clear in the podcast. It was not a surprise to me that Hitman won. This is THEIR list and what game had more of an impact with Giantbomb as Hitman this year? Certainly not DOOM.

Glad to see Hitman win. Its actually kinda insane that it hasn't received the top tier accolades at other outlets. Its somehow flown under the radar at many places. its a very well deserved GotY.

The theory behind building the list from empty to encourage more positive discussions about the games was good in theory but I'm not sure it ended up working that way. Of course it's tough when you are comparing the best games of the year and the easiest thing to do is to look at their flaws but it's always a shame when it gets to that and Brad clearly felt the same towards the end there.

I'm shocked Hitman ended up on top although I completely agree it belongs there. I thought Doom was a walk up winner based on all of the discussions in previous categories where it constantly came up while Hitman rarely featured.

Maybe I'm overthinking it but I kind of wish they would do a indie and AAA category. I just don't see how a game even like Inside or Stardew Valley could compare to a AAA game like Hitman or Overwatch. Especially when everyone has played those AAA games and a handful play these indie games.

Another point I think they should play all the games on their list and they should make the list BEFORE they do the discussion.

This is a list about what *they* played, not what *everyone* played. Also I think distinguishing between games based on budget does a disservice to games in both categories. BTW Stardew Valley absolutely compares to higher-budget titles in terms of how much fun you can have (if you're in to that kind of game), and on top of that it's seen a level of post-launch support that would be impressive even for a AAA studio.

About the second point, IIRC the whole point of the recordings is to capture the debate that leads to creating the list, so creating the list before that doesn't quite make sense. However, I felt like this year more than before, people (seemed like Alex a lot of the time, but I'm sure others did it too) were bringing up games that they explicitly knew weren't going to make it, which sometimes made the "discussions" a chore to listen to (also they would always be talking about "does this game hang" which is a lame phrase the 10th time...). I wish they could have found a better outlet for that stuff and left the recorded group debate for games that they would actually meaningfully push for.

@bahmirk: Hmmm I don't know about that. It's nice to see indie games get recognition beside the bigger AAA games of the year. Your right that not everyone will have played them, but lists like this are a good way to get them into the limelight and introduce them to potential new players.

I definitely disagree with you about deciding what's on the list prior to the podcast. Half of the fun comes from the extended debates.

OT: I've finally picked up hitman, this was the last bit of convincing I needed along with it being on steams winter sale. I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in.

DOOM however I would have further down the list. It's a grea. DOOM game, a fine one of them in fact. If not great. But it just doesn't do enough for me. It landed as very one note. Maybe hype killed it for me and I accept I'm in the minority but it just feels like a better more modern take on what serious Sam and its ilk have been doing for years. Which ironically is a modern take on DOOM. A good maybe even great game but not top of my list. I think it's makes sense for GB though, the all seemed to have a great time with the game.

I love Doom, but best story? Seriously? It shouldn't have even been mentioned, let alone be in the top three. I think everyone's been blinded by Doom being so surprisingly good. People are acting like Doom invented Hell. Even the story of opening a portal to hell for the energy isn't all that original. And that would be fine. My expectations for originality in videogame stories (especially FPS) isn't all that high, but there's many other problems.

I still don't understand, story-wise, why I was going back and fourth from Hell and Mars. Each level just felt like a long fetch quest with no real purpose (apart from killing and having fun). I understand why they would do that from a game-play perspective since playing in the same environment for half the game and then a second environment for the second half would feel somewhat repetitive, but it feels like it was shoehorned into the story.

And then there's the codex. It's like grimoire cards but you don't have to go to a website to read them. I don't know about you, but the last thing I feel like doing while I'm busy ripping and tearing is to stop and read.

Again, I do love Doom. I even played the multiplayer for awhile. But putting it in the running for best story? No.

Hitman is a great game. From what I've seen of Doom, it's just not my type of game. Super glad Dan wrangled Stardew Valley on the list; that's my personal GotY. Was disappointed how everyone else was against it. Not saying I expected it to be higher, because I definitely didn't. The few times I saw Thumper being played, it looked boring as shit, so I don't agree with it being higher. But, hey, opinions.

Whenever an odd niche game like Ekranoplans is mentioned in these deliberations, it's always weird to me. Like, yeah it's bad, but was anyone really expecting otherwise from some random-ass, no-name-developer game? If you're going to go down that road, there's tons of shovelware on Steam that would compare. Feel like that category shouldn't include those esoteric games. It is a bad game, though.

Last note: whomever wrote this list entry for Reinhardt sounds like they don't know how to use his ult. That shit can be game-changing.

Dan should just play harvest moon or rune factory. Every time he describes why he likes Stardew Valley he just describes the base feature set of one of those games.

Well maybe then they should've just played Team Fortress 2 instead of putting Overwatch on the list.

It's a great game, and I feel there are a ton of people who never played Harvest Moon (including me), for whom Stardew Valley is in the Top 10. And even for people who did play Harvest Moon.

Real happy Stardew and Thumper made the list for best games of 2016. Thanks again for all the great content and here's to some more things I'll eventually garner interest into playing!

Speaking of games acquired because of discussions last year: I'm going to give Witcher 3 another shot and try desperately to not shut it off after an hour and a half. This may just be one I never understand.

I was surprised to see Hitman win - and very surprised that Jeff was basically the one making the argument. I thought for sure it would be the opposite situation and he would have pushed for Doom. Both are great games, but given the way they have consistently gone back to Hitman this year, it feels like the right choice for the site.

@achillesforever It's rough being a Witcher and/or Uncharted fan round these parts, hehe. You get used to it! The praise those games do receive always comes begrudingly and with plenty of caveats.

You're not the only one. DOOM didn't really hit me. I won't say I'm surprised because I understand opinions differ, but putting DOOM ahead of Titanfall 2 seems like madness to me.

It's nonsensical that everyone admits the doom campaign is superior and yet it loses because it happened to include a sub-par multiplayer. If the multiplayer wasn't in the game it would've won goty hands down, that fact shows the "failure to do [your] jobs" that jeff referenced. Hitman is a great game, but this is sorta tainted by this faulty thinking.

If DOOM hadn't included multiplayer the biggest complaint would be that a fuckin' DOOM game doesn't have multiplayer and would lose the GOTY to Hitman.

Kinda sad to see Uncharted 4 get shafted based on what feels like the sole reason being that it's a fourth Uncharted game. It looks amazing, plays well, has a great story, likeable characters, etc. Yes it's a been there done that type of thing, but that should hardly be a negative against it since it's very very hard to improve on what was almost perfection with Uncharted 2. As for the criticism that it's just combat zone, platforming, and rinse/repeat that very same argument could be made against Doom. It could be made against almost every game out there now. Just feels like the criticisms are very flimsy just for the sake of being criticisms.

In my opinion UC4 would be way higher up if it was the actual UC3, I love Uncharted 3 since it was the first one I played, but in retrospect it is also a tiring game with the amount of set pieces they throw haphazardly with no rhyme nor reason. Though getting rid of Drake's Deception would mean no Charlie Cutter so maybe its okay that we got the games we got. Brad and Jeff just seemed really burnt out on the series even though I could go for 10 more of those games in that universe.

@drgreatjob: The Witness is one of the most satisfying and well designed games I've ever played. A true vision executed to damn near perfection from start to finish in my opinion.

We've had like what, 5 Souls-esque FromSoftware games over the past 7 years or so? I appreciate how good those games can be but I'm thrilled Brad and Jeff pushed for and got The Witness to #4 and it's far and away my #1.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't the actual argument though. Only Jeff made it and considering his own list, I don't think it was the sole reason he had for putting Hitman above DOOM. I also don't think anyone has said that DOOM had a superior single player, just that they thought it had the best shooter campaign in recent years. Ultimately they found Hitman better than that. That's not faulty thinking. As Drew put it, as a website they found Hitman to be better.

I was really surprised that Jeff was the one who suggested that Hitman and Doom be switched for the top spot considering he has admitted that he hasn't played all that much of Hitman (echoing this same sentiment in his own list). I was certain Doom was going to win, but I guess that crummy multiplayer really bummed him out. Watching their content on Hitman this year got me to buy it and I've put in ~150 hours so far. I think I've laughed every single time I've sat down to play it. Kudos!

I don't line up with Alex's taste at all or particularly like his demeanour this year. Firewatch for me was a disappointment that has only good voice acting and a nice aesthetic. The story pales in comparison to something like Gone Home which is still the best walking simulator far and away for me.

I liked Thumper but there wasn't enough to it in my eyes, a great style but overpriced for what it is. Glad Uncharted didn't end up in the top 10, no game should be considered if multiple people would have dropped it if not for the story. I'm with Jeff, those games have always been slogs since the very first.

I could have taken either Doom or Hitman for GOTY. But let's be honest, it's still Mass Effect 2!

Edit: Also Uncharted 4 should have been DQ'd from every category for poor use of Loretta McCready's talents.

@cmblasko: this year it may be valid. I am a fan of tha franchise and played all of them. Thought Dark Souls 3 was really good this year, certainly the best in the "Dark" series. That said when I started making my own list there were just so many great games this year which I thought were worthy of recognition that it felt like a waste to highlight Dark Souls 3 in their place - a game I enjoyed a whole lot, but it was just more Dark Souls. Bloodborne was entirely new and deserved all the praise for its unique setting and new gameplay mechanics. DS3 is just a solid Dark Souls entry, nothing more, nothing less.

Did I put more time into DS3 than Superhot? I sure did, but Superhot is such a unique new experience that it would be a shame to leave it off a top 10 list in lieu of a solid sequel. At the same time I do have Uncharted 4 on there so numbered lists overall are pretty dumb.

Did not expect Jeff to come out in Hitman's defense against DOOM, nice plot twist.

Doom even being in the best story discussion is depressing and insulting to the games that actually tried to create a compelling story. Doom has almost no story, the story does not tie into the gameplay in any meaningful way, is very one note and has no character development. It's the best they could do for a Doom game and it's good that it doesn't take itself serious, but it's not a good story. Doom has more style than story. They even had a separate category for that...

DARK SOULS 3 WAS FUCKING GREAT; CRIMINALLY SNUBBED

It was definitely better than fucking Salt and Sanctuary

It's a known thing that happens on this site. The series has never escaped the Soulsborne Snub and I don't see it ever happening after what happened to Bloodborne last year. Hell, even Brad said something along the lines of "No one has said the words Dark Souls 3 this entire time."

Dan should just play harvest moon or rune factory. Every time he describes why he likes Stardew Valley he just describes the base feature set of one of those games.
