Guitar Hero: King James Version

Christian rock gets its own Guitar Hero clone.

If Konami's guitar game ever got big in the States they could have called this
If Konami's guitar game ever got big in the States they could have called this "Jesus Freaks."
Personally, I'm of the mind that as soon as Man electrified the guitar, we embarked on the dark project of communing with demons, using the six-stringed instrument to allow Satan into our midst. It would culminate with the release of Judas Priest's 1982 album, Screaming for Vengeance.

So it's with some trepidation that I gaze upon a pre-order page for Guitar Praise: Solid Rock, an upcoming PC/Mac product from your friends at Digital Praise. Could this all be a devious trick? What happens if I play these songs backwards?

The game sounds like a pretty standard Guitar Hero clone with over 50 songs that reflect Christian values, online scoreboard support, support for two players (complete with a lead/bass split), and four difficulty levels. Also? The guitar is wireless. You know, provided these guys went and got the masters for all of these songs and split them apart so that the guitar stops playing when you stop playing, this looks like it's about all of the features you could possibly want out of a Christian rock game.

Here's the song list for the game. By putting DC Talk's Jesus Freak in the game the developers have... well... they put I song I've heard of in it. Congrats?

  • 12 Stones - Broken
  • Bride - Same Ol' Sinner
  • Caedmons Call - There You Go
  • Casting Crowns - Lifesong
  • Chris Tomlin - Made to Worship
  • Darrell Evans - So Good To Me
  • David Crowder Band - Foreverandever Etc.

I've heard of Flyleaf, but that's about it. I really am finding this hard to believe right now.

I can't believe this game is real!  Weird.

I'm a big fan of Relient K, but I find it a little odd they're on here.  They are pretty much your standard modern alt rock band not christian rock.  Just have a few christian influences in a few of their songs.  Haven't heard of anything of the other people though.

I've only heard of 3 bands on there (12 Stones, Flyleaf and Skillet). 12 Stones might be a hard stretch to call Christian rock, particularly some of their newer stuff.
Of those 3 bands, 12 Stones ain't bad and the Skillet song they actually picked are decent too (though I probably wouldn't say the same for their whole collection).
By no means am I a Christian rock person either, but I had these CDs through my Zune subscription already.

Its funny how they classify these bands as Christian. Sure some of them are, but in interviews with some, flyleaf for example, they clearly said they are not Christian, they are musicians that like Rock and Roll and believe in god. So yea...I don't see how that makes them Christian rock.

The title of this article is amazing.

Also, some decent bands and songs seem to be on this list.  Sounds like a pretty good alternative for those who like to rock out to Christian rock.

Newsboys is the only band I've ever even heard of before on there. Eh, well good for 'em. I'm sure there's an audience out there for the thing.

I was wondering how long it would take for something like this to happen. I am shocked it took this long.

I'm not going to rip on the game because of what it is. I have no interest in Christian music but I do applaud the fact that now that audience has something to enjoy in this area too.

And let's be honest, nothing can be worse than the overcharted, hard-just-to-be-hard Guitar Hero III.

Interesting. Kudos for actually reporting on this. I'm not huge into Christian, but there are definitely some good bands on that list. My problem with this is it being for the PC/MAC. BLEAH. Gimme X360 and I may rent it for some achievements. ;)

I love some of the wording in the ad for this game...

"But watch out: if you can't keep up, the artists will take a break and stop the music."  not You Suck ... or FAIL.. but "the band is taking a break right now while you find your way" ...  Awershum

Also if you look at related products and check out the blurb about the Guitar...

"Power Duel mode also lets players send "surprises" that impact their opponent's play." ... no attacks here... but hey SUPRISE!!!... lol.

Wow the seats in the churchs must be really empty for them to resort to ripping off popular media ideas.

I don't mind having religion in games when its important to a story (e.g. Assassins Creed) but using games to promote (or as Digital Praise puts it "Glorify") a religion is both annoying and incredabily insulting. I also feel the same way about politics and illegal activities.

I believe George Carlin (1937 - 2008) said it best when he said "Keep thy religion to thyself"

I can't believe they put decent features and effort into this game. You have to admit that it doesn't sound like a complete piece of crap from the technical side, just the songs are kinda shitty.

They play Flyleaf and Thousand Foot Krutch on "Hard Attack" on Sirius satellite radio.

Thousand Foot Krutch actually sounded pretty good... can't say i have heard of more than 3 of these groups/bands/singers.

I think this is a good idea. I love Gospel music, so this is definitely something I might consider. I normally don't like Rock music, but if it's tlaking about Glorifying God then I can't tolerate it,  if only it was for consoles.

And if there is an audience for it, then hey why not. Music games need MORE DIVERSE types of music!

As someone who appreciates Christian music, I knew it was only a matter of time before something like this came out. After all, if there's a market for a product, it's likely going to get made. I'm just bummed that they won't go the (admittedly more expensive) console route by sticking to Macs and PCs. I'll be even more bummed if they make Guitar Hero and Rock Band peripherals inoperable with their games (yeah, there will be more; see Dance Praise), but that's the business world for ya.

As far as the Christian cred of the artists included, most appear to be either explicitly Christian in how they market themselves or started out more in that direction. It's not uncommon in the CCM (Christian Contemporary Music) world for popular bands or singers to attempt a mainstream/secular crossover and tone down their earlier religious rhetoric. (Witness Amy Grant et. al.) But even bigger acts like U2 -- based on many published interviews -- would not call themselves Christian bands, though there appear to be Christians in their ranks. It's a difference in focus (an important one for any band) that would lead a group to classify itself one way versus another. Even with these groups, however, you can find the occasional song or two that clearly exhibits Christian themes if not explicit lyrics.

I'm not big on the Christian rock or the Jesus, but some of those bands are actually decent.  I like early 12 Stones and I probably would've gone with a different set of Thousand Foot Krutch songs.

...I still find this hilarious, though.  All I can see are those commercials for those Christian rock compilation cds, lol.  This track lacks a Sonic Flood song.

I have trouble with any product that mentions Jesus over 500 times and was made in the last 10 years. Christian "rock" should not be relegated to its own genre, all of it is just pretty crappy alt. rock. I don't believe in god, but I can actually listen to a song that has Christian themes as long as it isn't terrible.

jeff sorta raises an interesting question.  just when did "the devils music" , rock and roll, (and they were saying this back when people considered elvis presly rock and roll) get co-opted by christianity?  isn't the very idea of christian rock sorta an oxymoron?  not to say you can't believe in your superstitions and still like to rock out but i dunno....i just...dont know.

broqz:

They say/said the same thing about hip-hop music (devils music) but there is Christian Rap and hip-hop.

I see the point that you (and Jeff) but what you are basically saying is that the general populations' opinion of a genre is what defines it. And as we both know in regards to  both Rock and Hip-Hop and Rap, that is definitely not true.
