High Sales A Slow Burn For Valkyria Chronicles

Sega's offbeat wartime strategy game is seeing renewed health at retail these last few weeks. We think we know why.

Every time I post something about Valkyria Chronicles--be it news of disappointing sales, or the release of downloadable content--I figure it's the last time there will be anything to say about the game. But (let's play the hyphen game) the scrappy-little-alternate-history-quasi-turn-based-action-strategy game for the PlayStation 3 keeps rearing its head.

And this time it's good news. Sega posted on its own blog a report that Valkyria, newly discounted in Japan, was the number-one seller on Amazon.com in that country last week. What's more,  the game ain't doing too shabby in the U.S., reemerging at number five on the domestic PS3 chart.

In North America, Valkyria Chronicles jumped last week to top 5 among PS3 game sales, back on the list at #5, and behind only titles like Guitar Hero and Killzone 2. Considering the game came out last November, it’s an excellent sign that DLC, continued support from SEGA, and amazing support from all the Valkyria fans truly can have a great effect on game sales. Props to all you evangelists who are telling your friends and fellow PS3 owners to pick it up - you have made a difference!

Good for them and good for Valkyria, which really is a pretty neat game. Though I'm a bit put out they didn't cite what we all know to be the true reason for this slow growth in sales.

Hey Sega, think you could do us a solid and patch in trophy support now?
