Indie Game: The Movie Trailer Likely to Make You Tear Up

I'm not a huge fan of the term "indie" because it forces developers into a stereotype, but I dare you to try and not fall head over heels in love with Indie Game: The Movie after watching its trailer. You may have seen filmmakers James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot trudging around massive film equipment to places like PAX the past year or so, as they've put together Indie Game: The Movie.

Indie Game: The Movie follows Edmund McMillen and Tommy Refenes as they launch Super Meat Boy, Phil Fish showing Fez for the first time and the genesis of Jonathan Blow's Braid.

The film has been shot and edited, but in order to put that final coat of paint on--audio, color, mastering--Swirsky and Pajot are looking for a little help through a second Kickstarter campaign.

"So far, we’ve done everything ourselves on this project," reads the Kickstarter page, hoping to raise $35,000. "The producing, directing, cinematography, editing, and writing for the feature film and all the web videos we’ve made during the process. But, now we need some help from others and support to get the feature film done right and taken to the next level, technically-speaking."

Given the Kickstarter is already at $21,000 (as of this writing, anyway), it's probably not going to take very long before Indie Game: The Movie has everything it needs. I can't wait to see it myself.

Also, any Fez news is good news, even if it's old news that really isn't news.

I've already given them some money for this. Looking forward to the final product!

I don't really like indie games but this looks like a well-made and interesting documentary.

I want to see this. As someone who is looking to getting into games seeing what guys like Blow did and do is really cool.

This is exactly what this trailer does.

It's less about personality stereotype than it is about what "indie" / "independent" means.

I did the $35 option for the DVD, but I would have paid way more to finance a Blu-Ray version.

When is Indie Game: The Movie: The Video Game coming out?

These guys look like a bunch of douchebags. Stop trying to force some weird artistic justification into your games. We played Braid because it was a fun puzzle game, not because 'it goes into deepest emotions'. Its a video game, not art. Get out of your own arse.

This is all well and good but I would be more interested in Tom's game. Remember thatnutcase who tried to get Nintendo to release his game on DS by locking himself in a room with a webcam on? Whatever happened to that guy?

Also, I agree with you Patrick (about "indie" forcing a stereotype). This quote from this article came to mind when I read that:

"Indie doesn't mean a heap to me, but it still means a lot of things to a lot of people," [Alexander] Bruce[, creator of Hazard: The Journey of Life] told me. "They're the ones who can make whatever classifications they want. It doesn't matter either way.

"I'd probably rather just be known as a game designer."

@MysteriousBob: I'm not really sure where you are getting that. They are talking about their motives for making a game, not saying what you should get out of them. I think if you looked at creators of video games on any level they would all have "artistic justification" for doing it.

It looks amazing, but for a film about creative people, it sure has a super-generic title.

@MysteriousBob: If you watch some of the videos on their website, you'll get more what they mean. They're talking about their inspiration for their games, like how McMillen's childhood and fascination with otherworldly creatures has influenced a lot of his work. It's not what you got out of the game, it's what they put into it.

Firstly, I really like the 'outside the box' type stories you've been posting Patrick. I just finished reading the articles you posted about gaming with aspbergers (ugh, spelling fail) and I like the articles about the gaming... I dunno community? World? Whatever the articles about people who are into gaming as opposed to just games themselves. Not that I dislike the articles about specific games, I just like the spice you're snapping into.

Also I'm pretty into seeing this, I've become obsessed with documentaries ever since getting netflix.

This movie is something I will buy.

I watched the video, but I didn't find any reason to shed some tears. It's just dudes trying to make money with their video games. Yeah.
