It's October, Clear Your Schedule

Do you realize how many high-profile games are coming out this month? A metric tonne. How much is that? I don't know, but it sure sounds like a lot.

Time has a way of flying by, doesn't it? I woke up this morning and all of a sudden, it got all October on us! Man, where did that come from? It's my solemn duty to inform you that in the month of October there are some video games coming out. Not like this is anything new; if you've been keeping up with this industry for any number of years, you know October is the first full month when all those games you've been fawning over in the Sears catalog will finally be out there and available to play. (Did anyone else look at games in the big thick newsprint Sears holiday catalog as a kid? Was that just a regional thing? One screenshot and a short, misinformed blurb was all it took to sell me on the latest pile of NES garbage, let me tell you. That was pre-Nintendo Power, I think.)

Anyway, I'm getting a little worried about this month. Here are just the games I have any degree of personal interest in, to say nothing of all the other releases coming down the pipeline.

Oct. 7

Fracture (maybe)

Oct. 14

Dead Space
SOCOM: Confrontation
Saints Row 2

Oct. 21

Fable II
Far Cry 2
LittleBigPlanet (!!!)

C'mon, can't pass this one up either.
C'mon, can't pass this one up either.
BioShock PS3 (yeah, again)
Midnight Club: Los Angeles
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

Oct. 26 - 28

Guitar Hero World Tour
C&C: Red Alert 3
MotorStorm: Pacific Rift
Fallout 3

It's sort of nuts when you see 'em all laid out like that. Who has time for all this? That triple whammy of Far Cry, Fable, and LittleBigPlanet all on the 21st seems especially cruel. And Fallout 3 seems like a game I could be happy playing in exclusivity for the whole month. I guess at some point, if you choose to carry your gaming hobby into your adult life, you have to abandon any completionist tendencies you may have been harboring, get choosy, and accept that you'll never get to play every game you're interested in, unless you never do anything else but play games, ever. Hell, we barely ever do anything else but play games around here, and even we don't get our hands on every game that we think matters (to us or you). I guess we should all be thankful there are this many potentially excellent games coming out. They could all be crappy ones.

You know, I don't even want to see what November looks like.

I've discovered that it doesn't matter when you play a great game, be it the day it's released, or a month later, It's still going to be a great game. I'll be waiting to play one great game, because I'm playing another! Carrying over a love for video games into adulthood is fantastic!

As a kid I wouldn't be waiting to play a great game because I was already playing one,I'd be waiting because I was poor and young and the only way I'd get a game is if it was Christmas or my Birthday!

I too drooled over the sears catalog (videogames and later, bras/panties) before I found Nintendo Power and later, Frederick's of Hollywood. Ah the younger years. Now I get all my hobby fixes on the internet.

But it is seriously very close to launch to not have definitive Fallout 3 PC specs. C'mon Bethsoft... I needa build muh damned computer already.

damn... well, actually brad, Dead Space is not on my must buy list... but thats because I can only afford two games this month...
those two games are actually one game: The Fallout 3 collectors edition.
Now there's a must buy.

Man, Fable 2 & Fallout 3 are on my list but, like many, I can't afford them right now.  I'll have to wait until Christmas, the spending season, to even think about those games.  With Tomb Raider Underworld & Gears 2, maybe even Resistance 2 out next month, it's going to be torture waiting to play the games I want.  This Holiday gaming season has the potential to top that  of 2007.

I fondly remember the sears catalog.  My small, Oklahoma town didn't feature any channels that had videogame shows on and we couldn't afford vg mag subscriptions so, Sears had my back during Christmas season.  Toys 'R Us also had a good catalog.

I'm from the Hendersonville area, and yes, Sears and JCPennys catalogs were a Oct. and Nov. pasttime when I was a kid, only to be dissappointed EVERY year!  Maybe it was regional there.  But yes, Oct is a glorious month, yay!  And Silent Hill 5 too!

Since I live in the past, the only games there that I'll be able to play are Castlevania and Guitar Hero.
And I won't be playing Guitar Hero.

Still unsure about ordering GH:WT and still unsure about Far Cry 2.

Its a very exciting run up to Christmas for sure. I hope some of the smaller/less mainstream titles don't get squashed completely, but I suppose it is inevitable.
BTW is there any clearer release date coming soon for 3D Bionic Commando? Page just says Q4 2008 atm, which is sort of now.

Bioshock and LittleBigPlanet's are definites so I guess I need to choose between Far Cry and Dead Space now.

Fallout 3 hands down. Propably the only game that doesn't have install limits or shitty drms that'll drag down my pc's preformance. Seriously, i've got somany of those now in a short time that after a few upgrades my phonebill is going to kill me. [might be 2 years from now but shit, it's inevitable]
So salute to Bethesda for not crapping over their players, $upport definatly incomming from me.

Brad, I was the same as you with the Sears catalogue. Whenever the winter issue would come out, I'd go straight to the video games section and circle the games I wanted for christmas. I remember seeing Sonic 3 and going apeshit.

I'm trying to stick to this, but would otherwise probably grab Motorstorm, Far Cry, and Spiderman if these were spaced out. NOT to mention that all of November's goodies are all at the beginning of the month.

Easy month for me. Fallout 3 is the only one that strikes me as must-buy. But it comes out so late in the month, it might as well be listed against November's batch of games.

For me its Fable II, Saints Row 2, Dead Space, Fallout 3 and Red Alert III.

For some reason I am thinking that I am going to drop RA3 just because; 1 recent DRM crap with EA(greg, I love you and have loved C&C, but yeah).  And then I don't know why but the great buzz isn't there, I mean I am a fan of the series but people have been really down on it...I have heard a lot of not so great stuff about the in game cutsences being a little too "self aware we are funny" kind of thing...

And I am not sure if I am sold on Little Big Planet as of yet.  For one, it just looks like its going to eat through hours on end of gaming time with the creator and these days if I can beat a single player game every 2-3 months that is about where I am at...
