Jason Oestreicher's Top 10 Games of 2016

You won't believe how much anime makes his list!

No Caption Provided

Jason is known lovingly as "No, The Other-Other Video Guy" at Giant Bomb. He has participated in bar brawls, knows most of the words to Grease 2, and thinks he saw a ghost once.

10. Dishonored 2

Not being a fan of first-person games and being terrible at stealth in general, 2012’s Dishonored was a surprise hit for me. I grew to love the characters, adored its painterly look, and eventually found a play style that gelled with me. I played through it twice.

Dishonored 2 is quite simply more Dishonored, for better or for worse. It doesn't raise the bar, but I had already placed that bar pretty high. Environmental storytelling is a standout, the game's a looker, there's a ton of gameplay diversity, and... this all sounds great, right? It mostly is. But some missteps really prevented it from rekindling my love. In particular, the story beats were mostly dull and new characters seemed analogous to those in the previous game.

09. Doom

I ripped. I tore. Huge guts. Big guns.

No Caption Provided

08. Darkest Dungeon

I don’t think I ever exhibited masochistic tendencies prior to playing this game. During, however… I don’t know. Maybe? I would have to, right?

Your party members are subjected to truly abhorrent situations both by their dark selves and the grotesque Lovecraftian creatures they encounter. It’s stressful. I feel pangs of guilt as I push these poor souls on. But still I push them. Why? It’s a hell of a challenge. And the cartoony macabre aesthetic is unique and really cool looking and… these sickos probably deserve it anyway.

No Caption Provided

07. Odin Sphere Leifthrasir

I’ll take the heat for putting a remaster on my list. Certainly a remaster that is done this well. Odin Sphere was already a fantastic game. Signature Vanillaware art, music, combat. I could just kiss it - warts and all. But a lot of those warts got removed with Leifthrasir making an already near-perfect game even more near-perfect-er and a joy to play through again.

No Caption Provided

06. Street Fighter V

Listen, I’ve aired my grievances several times. I’ve had my heart broken and, frankly, am embarrassed by the state of Street Fighter. And yet, here it is on my list. And pretty high up too. Well, I’ve always maintained that, at its core, Street Fighter V is a pretty damn good fighting game. So while I’m still salty about things like the price of DLC and input lag, I can’t deny that I had a blast playing. Simple as that. That’s all I’ve got. Want a better explanation? Go check out what Patrick Miller had to say.

No Caption Provided

05. God Eater 2: Rage Burst

Listeners of the Bombcast who tolerated the God Eater Minute segments knew this would likely show up on my list. However, I wasn’t so convinced. Each year that I do one of these, I briefly entertain the notion of presenting my critical picks. Then I take my head out of my ass and just put down what feels right--guilty pleasures and all.

Despite being a big fan of Monster Hunter, I guess part of me is feeling a bit of fatigue from it and the dedication it requires. I needed a break and God Eater 2 was there for me. It’s extremely solo friendly, light on busy-work, and, hey… some days I just want to come home, fulfill a pledge to my gigantic sword-gun, sprout sparkly anime wings, and listen to some fucking J-Rock, OK?

No Caption Provided

04. Oxenfree

I know teens. I was one. I’ve watched all of Dawson’s Creek and think Joey ended up with the right guy (come at me). I also know ghosts. Pretty sure I got pushed by one once.

Oxenfree’s got both. Not ghost teens, but teens AND ghosts.

In my expert opinion, Oxenfree does a hell of a job of depicting each doing what they do best. The teens are (convincing) drama-filled shitbags and the ghosts are pretty spooky.

No Caption Provided

03. Hyper Light Drifter

There is something so special about Hyper Light Drifter. A lot of what makes me smile about Hyper Light Drifter is the overall feeling I get while playing. Reductively, there’s a little bit of 2D Zelda and maybe some Fez. It evokes 16-bit aesthetics, yet doesn’t set into a mold. Instead, its masterful sprite work, animation, and soundtrack feel modern and unique. Hyper Light’s minimalistic approach to storytelling and user interface is effective and helped immerse me in its world.

When I’m there, I’m IN there. The look, the sound, and the feel. Combat is surprisingly challenging, but when I mess up, I own it--it feels like my fault. Likewise when I do well. I feel like a badass when I clear a room and The Drifter punctuates it by spinning his sword around and planting it in the ground AS A BADASS DO.

No Caption Provided

02. Salt and Sanctuary

I’m a big fan of Ska Studios and their brand of 2D. I also enjoy me some Souls games (so do they, obviously). So when you tie these together it is very much like getting the proverbial chocolate in my peanut butter and very very much something that I find delicious.

01. Overwatch

Hid my KDR. GOTY.

Love the list, Jason! Even though a lot of people were disappointed in MHGen, I still loved it. Yes, the styles and arts aren't balanced particularly well, but they open up a ton of different playstyles. Adept Long Sword is some of the most fun I've had in the series since I started back with 3. And if you want to play the old way, Guild style allows that. I picked up God Eater 1 and 2 due to the God Eater Minute(s) and enjoy them, but I'd still put them below MHGen.

The one thing that held me back from loving S&S was the lack of a map. I found it super difficult to get my bearings in that game, especially in the Red Hall. I ended up dropping it around then. If they ever patch in a map, I'd be all over it.

@zaldar: Right, the other big Yoshitoshi ABe ones. Yeah, I've seen them both. Oddly I didn't care much for Lain, although I very much expected to like it.

I do like other genres besides just intense thinky sci-fi... like Ouran High School Host Club and Great Teacher Onizuka on the comedy side, Claymore and Hellsing Ultimate on the ultra-violent action side, and even period pieces/slice of life like Emma: A Victorian Romance. But the kinda generic shounen stuff, Naruto, Dragonball, Bleach? Meh. Don't care. I watched the original Fullmetal Alchemist series what feels like eons ago, and thought it was merely OK, that's probably the closest I got to liking any of that.

I've really grown to appreciate Jason's taste in games. I'm going to pull the trigger on Odin Sphere because of the way you guys talked about it during the GOTY deliberations and it now making your top 10. I don't think JRPGs would even make it into the discussion at all if it wasn't for Jason, so I'm glad he's part of the team.

Great to see Hyper Light and Oxenfree here too. Both great games.

I've been listening, watching, reading, and supporting the site for over two years now. I guess I'm not every observant because I've always heard Brad introduce Jason as "Jason A. Stryker" and thought he had the most bad-ass video-game-style name ever.

Turns out he has a regular name. And great taste in games.

Super fun read. Cool list-despite our tastes being very different. I totally understand where you're coming from with SFV. Sometimes it doesn't matter how shit everything seems to be when a game's core experience is exactly what you want from it.

@wynnduffy: I cannot get over how many times I've heard this line of complaint regarding Street Fighter V. Using only fight money I've managed to get all the characters so far and have enough money for the next 3 already, almost 4. I've also bought some costumes. Anyone with working hands can clear the story mode (both difficulties), all the character stories (in a few minutes at that), watch the demonstrations, and easily clear easy and normal survival with every single character, and that'll give you a good start. I've only put significant time online into 2 characters, playing Ryu almost exclusively until Balrog came out and then Balrog for the duration of season 1 until now when I switched to Gief.

While other people were busy whining about the difficulty of hard and extreme difficulty survival I cleared hard with a large number of the cast and extreme with a couple as well. If I felt like I was going to be in any sort of actual need for fight money at this point I'd grind out a few more, but between what I'll get back from new characters by doing their character story and the lower difficulty survival modes my cost basis for the rest of the upcoming season isn't really that high, also the weekly challenges usually offer what around 6k of fight money or more for what usually amounts to at most what? 10 minutes of play time total?

I really surprised that people are so upset about there being some real money only costumes. It's not as if they can support this game in the long term if nobody has to spend any money. Given that literally everything aside from some costumes are purchasable with in-game currency I would expect them to be at somewhat of a premium. I myself haven't bought many stages because the only time I ever use stage select is when I'm training, and if my online opponent has bought the stage there is a chance I get to play on it anyway, making buying the stage (to me) almost completely pointless.

The fight money system is very much viable for someone who is willing to put in the time.

I enjoyed each Souls game but I never found the pvp to be fun. People would find the most annoying builds and just do that....that's not fun. I do however think Souls 2 is the best one of them all and the Bell Tower is hands down the most fun I've had in all the games.

@shinofkod: I'm not really bothered about costumes you have to pay for. I just think the season pass is overpriced compared to the old model of buying versions. The costumes are also priced higher than SFIV's. The $25 DLC pack for a few costumes and a terrible stage using recycled assets from every other stage is embarrassing.

What you are describing is still a grind of sorts. Capcom said you could get FM by just playing, which is technically true, if you're happy to grind through survival and their boring offline content. The amount of money you get for simply playing online is pitiful which is what the draw is for most people when your game is devoid of interesting offline content.

Maybe I was too harsh to compare it to a mobile free to play game, but that fight money grind does become laborious when you clear the simple content like character trials, story mode and cinematic story. I also finished survival on extreme, never again. Absolutely mind numbing.

@ebinbraveheart: What I wanted to sound like is: "he showcases games, whenever he's on camera, which the others don't even wanna touch." And I said "biggest reason" not "only reason."

@shatteringlast: I knew that reference. I just wanted you to call Jason a jerk.

Generations is trash compared to MH4U. I've been on board for a handful of Monster Hunters now, but Generations really felt like a step in the wrong direction after what 4U added onto 3U.

No shame in omission.

I like SFV and still play it everyday. The joy that comes from fighting games in not about how many modes or characters you can play. Its about getting good at a character and having close competitive matches with other players to see how good you can get. All the criticisms are valid but lets not though the baby out with the bathwater.

@faridmon:I'm totally willing to concede that it might just be me, but man, nothing in it worked for me.

I didn't like the hunting styles. Striker, I'll get to. Aerial, I thought made mounting too flexible. I enjoyed the push and pull of most weapons needing to lure monsters near ledges to mount, which gave fights a nice flow. (I know some people just spammed the leap with the glaive, but that's their loss.) Adept just seemed unnecessary. I kinda figured a well-timed dodge was rewarding enough in that you didn't get hit.

I didn't like the hunter arts. I'm less sure what didn't sit right with me about these. I think they felt impotent as the designated "super-moves" and buffs, but also unnecessary on top of what the games already had for those things.

The deviants I don't mind the idea of, but I don't see what was so wrong with the subspecies that they replaced them rather than complemented them. Having the deviants cordoned off was weird.

Hyper monsters seemed simultaneously kinda lame and also took up WAY too much of the late game, which I'll get to in a moment.

Story was nonexistent. I know Monster Hunter isn't exactly a game anyone is coming to for its rich plots, but I thought 4U had a fantastic story as far as they go, and stepping from that (and even 3U) to this was a real let down.

Most of the new monsters are pretty forgettable. The only one I liked was Astalos and maybe Glavenus. Gammoth and Nakarkos were real dumb.

I think my biggest problem with it was its late game stuff. I do as much stuff offline as online, and as a consequence, I've done just about everything in both 3U and 4U solo at some point or another (short of Gogmazios). Most of Gen was pretty breezy right up until about the Hyper monster point, where it hits a goddamn wall. Nothing else I've done in the series felt like online was required to have any sort of reliable chance to beat a standard quest.

There's lots of smaller things too, but I think that covers the bulk of my gripes. I just hope the next game distances itself...

Does anyone else have trouble getting to the comments on this from the Forums page? I get page not found errors.

I find it a bit weird that my tastes align better with Jason's than almost anyone else this year (except #1, Overwatch, which I couldn't care less about) since I think Japanese game design has gone straight down the crapper the past ten years.

Hyper Light Drifter deserves more love. What a great game.
