Kinect Gesture Tech Coming To TVs and HTPCs

PrimeSense will put (most) of its voodoo into other machines.

Microsoft didn't lock up all the tech behind Kinect, meaning it's possible that the camera-controlled portion of the hands-free gadget to hit the market. And that's just dandy for creator PrimeSense, who is already striking deals to drop gesture controls into home theater PCs as well as TVs.

In a recent chat with Engadget, PrimeSense VP Adi Berenson revealed plans to put a rudimentary Kinect--called PrimeSense as well--into HTPCs by the end of the year. This is in addition to a deal the company signed with at least one cable company to have a Kinect-like box for TVs by summer 2011. Kinect tech embedded in TVs' innards is possibly coming, too, according to Berenson. So eat that, 3D.

Don't expect a Kinectimals-level experience.
Don't expect a Kinectimals-level experience.

What won't be coming across, provided that people actually want hands-free in their TVs, are Microsoft's ideas. Engadget reports that tilt or voice recognition are no goes for manufacturers. And while I'd hate to be the party pooper, I don't mind this. A device that can understand what I'm saying is just one more gizmo I'll have to defeat on Judgment Day. (Sources tell me our hands will be full enough as is.)

The sell-able portion of the tech will be able track movement in 3D space by converting our world into a grid that a computer can interpret via a camera. At the end of the day, this'll make browsing media, whether TV-based or not, with hand swipes and wrist flicks possible. You will not, however, be able to fart to change a channel or be able to predict future murders. This former is theoretically reserved for Kinect, while the latter is a Tom Cruise-exclusive jam.

i've already seen all the kinect menu navigating features  and videoplayback stuff and I know for a fact that its just a fucking gimmick. A remote control is still much much faster and more efficient. this is a HUGE fucking gimmick.

Bring on the future! "
Its not short-sighted, its just snarky.   "real holography" is a false bill of goods that hollywood has sold to make the future seem "SUPER RAD" . we've made no real progress in the field since Time Traveler has came out.  I understand that any tech can help future development, but i think you should curb your hopes and dreams a little. 3D has nothing to do with holograms. One is practically a "stare at the picture" eye-trick, and the other is a complex series of light beams.

Popular to contrary beliefs; you can wave your hand arms around like a lunatic while sitting down. "
Yeah but  Kinect wouldn't recognize it, I'd be waiving my arms around like a lunatic for no reason.

I remember it being confirmed that it recognises your movement while sitting down, but I could be wrong.

3d has very little to do with "holograms". its completely different technology...i dont see how 3D development would further "Holograms" at all... "Holograms" are projected images.....

Don't worry.  With Kinect 2, the innovative and convenient feature will be the inclusion of a remote control with buttons.

This " TV tech" is moving forwards way to fast for my liking. There was a time where you bought a TV and had it standing there in the living room for 10+ years before it finally died and you had to buy a new one, while in all that time, you weren't missing much having an old set.

Nowdays if you have a 2 year old TV it's already outdated and in need of replacement. And considering that a properly good & sized TV costs from 2.000EUR up, your wallet wont be happy.

Yeah, I was hoping that Kinect would work with my TV / Cable / etc.  Voice command for that or channel changing when I can't find the remote would be great.  Why can I not just yell out TV - TOP CHEF and it does the work for me.  Where is the future I have been promised!
