Mafia II Gets Steamworks Support

If this paves the way for Borderlands dumping Gamespy matchmaking, I'm in.

In its continuing efforts to make you think about Steam every time anyone mentions a PC game, Valve Software announced today that 2K's upcoming shooter Mafia II would ship on the PC with Steamworks support.

If you're planning on grabbing Mafia II on the platform the original Mafia made its name on, you'll enjoy the glut of Steamworks features alongside it: the automatic patching, stat-tracking, built-in downloadable content interface, multiplayer matchmaking, and those delicious Steam achievements that we track on Giant Bomb. And this applies to all PC versions of Mafia II; whether you buy the game on Steam, from a retail store, or from a competing download service, you'll still have access to the various Steamworks features... because you'll have to boot the game in Steam anyway.

Oh, woops. Wrong Steamworks.

2K and Valve also announced that anyone who purchases the Digital Deluxe Edition of Mafia II on Steam will receive a free copy of the original Mafia to boot.

Mafia II is the second announced game from 2K to feature Steamworks support, after Sid Meier's Civilization V: All Hexes, No Mercy. I imagine this deal paves the way for many future 2K releases to be tied into Valve's PC game distribution juggernaut from this point onward.
