BioWare has kicked off the PR cycle for their next sci-fi RPG with a bang. Check out the first teaser trailer and concept artwork.
BioWare just sent out a quick email suggesting we visit MassEffect.com, and when I did, well, I was greeted by this first teaser trailer for none other than Mass Effect 2. And before you watch it, let me just say this is how you do a damn teaser trailer.
OK, how exciting is that? Tension building...admirable service record...alien buddies...all good so far...SHEPARD KILLED IN ACTION...GETH WEARING N7 TAG...WHAT THE HELL?! Bravo, BioWare. Way to turn my expectations right on their pretty little head. I didn't think I could be more interested in the sequel than I already was, but there you go. I wonder how this jives with the recent news that you can import your original Mass Effect save game into the sequel? What do you think this trailer means for the series' storyline?
The site is getting absolutely slammed at the moment, so if you can't access it, I've also nabbed the two concept art wallpapers posted along with the teaser.

Holy shit, I did not see that coming. Either it's a serious fakeout or I'm going to have to grieve for my Shepard. At least if we have to create a new character I can make my Paragon character a biotic user instead of a soldier this time around.
Whether Shepard is only appearing to be killed in action or if he actually was KIA, I do not know. I kinda want to be able to make a new character though. I wasn't much of a fan of Shep's "I'm total military" voice. I usually play more of a mercenary in choice games. Still, whichever way it goes I'm hyped.
SHEPARD is not fucking dead! I will not buy into that bullshit! NO NO NO NO NO NO! I cant wait for this fucking game!!! AHAHGHRUGHRiuhgoierhgoettoiwrdhng rugols. WHERES SHEP MAN!!! This is the best teaser i have ever seen. I hope shepard is not dead though.
oh wow. now i am actually interested again. I played the first one and found it to be great but the gameplay seemed to be lacking for me, though the story was great. I am guessing as well that your past save just incorporates elements and decisions from your last game. Or maybe, shepard fakes her death when they find out she had alien lesbo sex to go underground and find a way to stop the invasion of the machines.
I'm on a second play through with sentinel class. Waiting for the upcoming PC patch before carrying on with it though. I don't think I'll take the 'Shepard is dead' bait just yet - Don't fear the Reapers! Kill 'em all!
hell shepard aint dead, its all a ploy, dont believe anything you are told in early teasers, shepards death will be part of the story, believe me he aint dead, why the hell would they show his death so prominently
I'm just glad to see any news about Mass Effect 2, because that means the game is coming along. Either Shepard really is dead (I'm sure this isn't the case, but just keeping an open mind) and your import data will only include information about your actions and perhaps the NPCs, or obviously someone wants to make it look like Shepard was killed. I'm actually kinda hoping it would be the dormer, because that would give you an excuse to start a character from scratch, while also maintaining any of the game-changing decisions you made.
I'm expecting a dissapointing "Shepard is dark and mysterious and everyone thinks he's dead and oh my god this is turning into a Splinter Cell" but it would be funny if after getting a bunch of players to level up their characters Bioware slaps them in the face and says "hey we imported your Shepard, he looks good in that casket." Wait, did Bioware say that you could import just your character's looks or his stats too?
I don't know what to make of this -- if there's anything to make out at all.
I never really understood how carrying over my Sheperd was going to work. This is a Western RPG. Aren't I supposed to get a clean slate? My level 60 Soldier could kill any Geth by raising an eyebrow in their general direction. And my Renegade meter was off the chart. So, what, would I level up that character even more? If I wanted to change it up and play nice with my dialogue options, wouldn't I be contradicting my character? And since Wrex, Kaiden, and Ashley could die, doesn't that exclude them from ME2?
I like the idea of continuity of character -- I wouldn't watch 24 without Jack Bauer -- but the logistics of an RPG tend to complicate things. I'm just very curious to see what they do. But if he is dead, I hope it's not a huge fucking distaction. I remember with KOTOR 2, people were obsessed with all the Revan bullshit that was invented to sweep him under the rug and give the player a clean slate. It overshadowed the plot entirely and gave people misguided expectations for a KOTOR 3 that never happened.
