Microsoft Announces New Xbox One 1TB Console for $399

Plus, the promotional $349 price for the 500GB has become a permanent price point.

The Xbox One Special Edition Covert Forces Wireless Controller looks a lot like a weird Deus Ex UI element to me.
The Xbox One Special Edition Covert Forces Wireless Controller looks a lot like a weird Deus Ex UI element to me.

Earlier this morning, Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb revealed a bundle featuring the new Xbox One with a 1TB hard drive, the updated wireless controller, and a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection. This new bundle will ship to retailers on June 16, just in time for E3.

The updated controller–which we mentioned on The Beastcast a few weeks ago–actually offers a little more than what we first thought. On top of a standard 3.55mm audio jack (replacing the proprietary input on the previous controller), the new model has improved audio quality, a higher max volume, bumpers that have been "more finely tuned," and the ability to receive wireless firmware updates.

Hryb also noted that the company would be extending the promotional $349 price for the 500GB model indefinitely. You might remember that Microsoft debuted the price drop last holiday season, and then decided to continue the promotion after it proved successful.

Finally, Hryb announced the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows, available this fall for $24.99 (or bundled with a controller for $79.95). Hryb's post only mentions Windows 10, so who knows if it will work with previous versions of Windows. Given all the attention Microsoft's been giving the increased interactivity between Windows 10 and Xbox One, though, my guess is no, at least not out of the box.

With E3 only a few days away, we'll know sooner than exactly how enticing this new bundle really is. All the price cuts and hard drive space in the world doesn't mean much without a decent lineup of games. Here's hoping they deliver.

@ei8htbit: I don't really think they're throughput limited on the storage interfaces either way (USB 3 or SATA II). My guess is it's a computational limitation as the data has to be decompressed into memory. Games would be many terabytes large if they didn't store it compressed. Remember the 50 Gig Titanfall download on PC? That was just uncompressed audio. Imagine what uncompressed textures and vertex data would be like.

As someone who has bought most of their consoles on the used market for the last few generations... yessssssssssss. Used 500GB Xbox Ones with Kinects should hopefully start to drop in price by another $50 any day now.

I'm okay with the price of the Controller+Adapter bundle. Only saving $5 with them bundled is terrible but audio through the controller is a must have feature.

Yeahhh...I mean, I have $80 but there is no way I'm spending that on a controller when the perfectly good 360 controller is half that price (besides the fact I already own a few of them.)

I just don't see this being a particularly good value. Granted, I haven't used the new controller, but still...there is no way it's twice as good as the old one.

A better controller with a bit more space is nice but I might as well wait for the Xbox One slim.

I wonder if the fact that the controller uses Wi-Fi direct has blown up the cost of the receiver? Still, $80 is kind of insane. I hope the Steam controller is good, because it's much more attractive price-wise.

I have never understood this "meh on PS4 you can change the hard drive so easy" since forever you have been able to plug in one with no size limit into the Xbox One and it just acts as if it's all one hard drive. I've had one sat behind my Xbox forever for a while now. No unscrewing stuff no downloading the latest firmware...nothing.

Also I prefer the physical controls the headset adapter offers rather than the software based solution that standard headsets will use through the regular jack. I've used all kinds of headsets with the adapter and they worked perfectly fine a much better solution would have been to build the adapter into the controller. They could have made the buttons narrower a bit like those on the Onlive controller so it's not quite protruding as far down.

@hatking: I have two external drives hooked up to my XB1 (I had an old one lying around, filled it up, bought a 2TB for cheap). It works like you'd expect it to; no different from the internal HD, really. No slowdown or problems or anything.

So given by a lot of your reactions I guess I'm wrong(no AM wrong no guessing just had to read the article itself) in assuming that the adapter to work with windows 10 isn't to make the controller work with your computer.I thought it was the thing that (unless I'm going crazy) was mentioned on the bombcast about a month ago where you would be able to play your Xbox One games on your windows 10 computer.

That was one of the few times I was listening to the podcast while working so maybe I picked them up wrong but that was the first thing that came to mind when I read this article and I thought yeah I guess that's not an unfair price, However 20 bucks for a wireless adapter? That is so ridiculous that I didn't even consider the possibility until I got the comments and saw that is how people interpreted it.

That's the thing right there for me. I already have two 360 controllers which are perfectly fine. Love em. I also have some PS4 controllers (SCP Server for the win!) I use and because of my office setup it's easy to keep all my consoles/controllers switching out. 80 bucks for a new controller is just impossible to justify. I am interested in it, if only to finally see how those triggers work and just for the general fun of using new controllers.

Like @conmulligan I'm interested in the Steam Controller but I have some conceptual hang ups about it still, namely, I wonder if any of the games I prefer to use a KB+M for (Civ, for example) will ever feel "as good", never minding the fact that many of those games don't have interfaces designed for distant viewing.

I'm not sure why I feel this way but I think the Steam Controller is being marketed as a replacement to KB+M, not to other controllers? Or am I wrong and the Steam Controller is supposed to also be better at, for example, first-person shooters?

@absolutedeicide: Thanks! That's really good to know. I thought about cracking it open and installing one internally, but I don't think it's worth voiding the warranty or possibly being banned from XBL. I'll probably just pick up an external drive one of these days.

You won't see a redesign until a die shrink is in place, and die shrinks out of TSMC where the APU for the machine is produced haven't happened for nearly 3 years.

Ultimately though who honestly cares about the size of the system, as long as it fits into an entertainment centre it's basically a non issue. It's still just black box that fades into the scenery.

Agree with all of that, especially now I've seen the horrible old Xbox 360 style mic they're bundling with the 1Tb console.

Still, it's pretty clear we're already into the race to the bottom phase of the consoles, if you wanted a premium product better hope you purchased the first round of each.

$80 for wireless controller pack pure greed and taking advantage of there PC players, I keep using DS4 instead.

Sony needs to release wireless Bluetooth USB adapter at much cheaper price just to fuck with Microsoft. And some official drivers for DS4 would be nice too.

Good for people who were on the fence.

I'm likely never going to pick up a Xbox One unless there are several games on it that I want to play and can't get anywhere else. And it's not even a brand loyalty thing — I've owned both an Xbox and a 360.

Right now the PS4 has Bloodborne and Persona 5. I'm likely going to pick up one in a few years. The Xbox One? Can't think of a game I want that I can't get on the PC, sadly.

The bumpers on the original Xbox One controller are shit, so the news that they're updating them is great. However the pricing on all current gen controllers is still ridiculous, and having to pay a load more just for wireless or a battery pack just sucks it up a bit further.

PS. I have nothing but instant dislike for this "Major Nelson" guy. Jeez that video was bad.

Sold all my consoles, been a weird gen where the consoles still have nothing almost 2 years of from launch. Not like the old days where they each had tons of exclusives and the PC version was probably inferior. Now everything is on PC, it's cheaper and it's much better because the consoles launched way under powered.

I'm going full PC only now.

They do need to make an Xbox One slim though, the thing is twice as big as it needs to be and omg power bricks are annoying!. Always have to end up splicing the cable to make it longer so I can hide the brick and not have it dangling down the wall.

I wish the new Xbox One controller would have an improved home button. It feels cheap and I have to forcefully press it down to get the pop up window to turn the console off. And I don't (but do) understand the need for the Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. What is wrong with just using Bluetooth like a normal PC accessory? Oh, that's right, you can't charge $25 for Bluetooth use.

@flameboy84: yeah, but you're adding another piece of external hardware to a console that's already big and bulky. The ability to easily swap out drives is a super nice feature, especially since external hybrids and ssd's aren't really around yet.

I still stick by what I'm saying; how big is an external HDD? I have it plugged into one of the rear USB ports and it just sits there behind my Xbox One in my TV unit not heating issues no worries. Also it is way easier to swap out a USB drive than an internal no matter what way you look at it.
You can also replace the Xbox One's drive it might not be as easy and potentially warranty voiding although I'm sure there are plenty of people there who are more than capable of doing so.

I've always found this balancing of reporting very erroneous. In all this discussion about new SKU's of both consoles everyone is so dismissive of the usb storage solution for Xbox One whereas full of praise for an option that require you to open up the machine and reinstall firmware and it literally makes no sense to me.

I think I perhaps carry a different perspective to many people . I'd argue I really am platform agnostic since I "abandoned" Nintendo and probably one of very few people who went from PS3-Xbox One.This perhaps means I'm looking at this with more genuine balance/less bias.

I had enough reasons for me to justify it; more games in the first year or so I wanted to play plus the real kicker Sony does not allow you to change regions (I moved from the UK to Canada 3 years ago) and I don't want to lose that "history" of my account so to speak, I'm not as bothered about trophies/achievements but its still a nice marker of your years of gaming. For me it's way more inconvenient to be switching between PSN accounts to purchase content etc... I know that you can share Plus across a console but it's still annoying that I cannot simply access the store without having to switch accounts. It's basically meant I will never own a Vita either as I don't want two accounts. Having to go through the hoops to get credit on my old UK account is too much a pain in the arse and then you are also at the whim of the exchange rate. It's such a simple thing and a joke that they have not implemented it.

You don't necessarily need the wireless adapter to use an Xbox One controller on PC, you can still use a micro USB cable and hook it up. Not a wireless solution, but still opens you up on getting the adapter later if you don't want to drop 80 dollars right away.

@wtrswoopes: I actually love them; the trick is to just nudge them while holding your fingers on the triggers. They work really well when you push them from the underside, so to say, of the controller and not down like you would push the bumpers on the 360. You can even hold the triggers fully down and click the bumpers by doing that.

It wasn't until I played Hotline Miami 2 on my PC with my xbox one controller to realize the bumper buttons were absolutely terrible, as it uses those buttons a lot to play it. Glad to see them updating the controller, but I'm still stuck with the old one, unless I buy the console (which that probably wont happen)
