Microsoft Unveils the Xbox One [UPDATED x2]

Improved Kinect functionality, live TV support, and a heavy focus toward sports content were some of the key takeaways from today's press event.

If you were coming into today's Microsoft press event primarily expecting to see new hardware, new media content, and a lot of sports things, then you probably came away pretty excited about the Xbox One.

Microsoft unveiled the new console today to a crowd of press in Seattle, WA, assigning the new console its singular name, offering up basic specs and new app and hardware features, as well as a small selection of games from both internal and 3rd party publishers. Here's a brief rundown on what we saw:

The Hardware:

Don Mattrick, presenting the Xbox One.
Don Mattrick, presenting the Xbox One.

The Xbox One includes:

  • An 8-core CPU
  • 8GB of System Memory
  • A Blu-ray drive
  • 500GB HDD
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • HDMI In/Out portsW

While these stats were touched on, Microsoft was far more keen to show off its new interface and media support innovations. Much was made about "Snap mode," a feature that lets you jump between multiple running apps by with simple voice commands. The demonstration showed that you could jump between a video game, web browsing, and live TV, among other things, just by calling out the relevant application.

Yes, live TV was a big focus of the presentation as well. Confirming previous rumors, it was revealed that the Xbox One will allow you to hook your cable connection directly up to the box, and jump between the live TV and in-system apps with relative ease.

In addition to the core hardware, the Kinect hardware has seen a significant technological bump as well. The new Kinect features a 1080P HD RGB camera (which can be used for Skype calls), 30 FPS color, and an increased field of view. It will be bundled with all new Xbox One devices.

Sports!

Exclusive content for FIFA 14 is coming to Xbox One.
Exclusive content for FIFA 14 is coming to Xbox One.

Sports got a big push in today's presentation, both in live and in video game form. On the video game front, EA Sports announced a special partnership with Microsoft to bring its upcoming slate of sports titles to the Xbox One within the next year. Games included Madden NFL 25, its upcoming UFC game, the (again) revived NBA Live 14, and FIFA 14, the last of which will include exclusive Ultimate Team content on Xbox One.

In the live sports arena, Microsoft has entered into an agreement with the NFL to bring live game broadcasts, as well as fantasy sports content, to the system.

Halo: The Series

One of the more unexpected moments came when the event cut to Steven Spielberg, who, via video, announced that he would be partnering with Microsoft to bring a new Halo TV series exclusively to Xbox One. His exact role on the project was not detailed, nor was any potential production date for the series.

Remedy and Forza

Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind the cult Xbox 360 favorite Alan Wake, showed off a brief, baffling trailer for its new Xbox One exclusive game, Quantum Break. The trailer mixed live action footage of a mother and her strange little girl, and presumably in-game (or at least pre-rendered) footage of a large ship crashing into a bridge, and then suddenly rewinding. More about the game is expected to be revealed at E3.

Microsoft also unveiled the expected, but certainly not unwelcome Forza Motorsport 5. After all, what would a next-gen console reveal be without exquisitely rendered video game cars?

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: There's a Dog Now
Call of Duty: There's a Dog Now

As expected, bulk of the show's end was dedicated to Activision's upcoming Call of Duty sequel, Ghosts, which will feature exclusive downloadable content on Xbox One. Ghosts, which is in development at Infinity Ward, features a script from Traffic and Syriana screenwriter Stephen Gaghan that follows a single soldier...and his trusty dog. Yes, much ado was made about a Navy SEAL dog buddy you'll have working alongside your character throughout the game. This dog was motion-captured, even, and will help out as a sort of companion A.I.

What Came After

Beyond the above, little else was learned at today's event, outside of a claim of 15 exclusive games scheduled for the system's first year, and a nebulous "later this year" release window. However, more information has been coming since the event ended, including additional games and a few answers to some lingering questions.

On the subject of backward compatibility, Engadget is reporting that the Xbox One will not play Xbox 360 games, nor digital games built for the 360 architecture. However, as small consolation, gamertags and scores will carry over to the new system.

As for the system's much-talked-about, but previously unconfirmed "always online" functionality, Wired's report on the console states that the system won't always be online. However, developers could make use of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service, which could present situations where the system would have to be online.

That doesn't quite answer the lingering question of how the Xbox One might handle used games. The Wired article notes that games can be installed to the system, and may have to be. For games that have been previously installed, second players would be prompted with a note saying they could pay a fee to add their account to the game and install it. However, Microsoft wouldn't make a complete declaration about whether or not other players would ever be able to ever play a used game without having to install/pay an additional fee.

UPDATE: Microsoft Support has officially denied Wired's report regarding potential fees for used games via Twitter, and stated that it has sent a correction to them. Wired's report currently still mentions the fees.

UPDATE 2: Eurogamer was able to get Microsoft's Phil Harrison to confirm the original fees report. Sort of. The example mentioned in the Wired article was confirmed by Harrison, though he mentioned that the ability for multiple users to share the same game would be possible, and that a "solution" for the used market was in place. He did not, however, specify what that solution may entail.

Lastly, multiple third-party games have been announced as coming to Xbox One, including EA's Battlefield 4, Square-Enix's upcoming Thief remake, as well as Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch_Dogs.

We'll bring you more on the Xbox One as it becomes available.

If I have to pay a fee to play a used game I have bought from a store or anyone, then maybe xbox one isn't for me. Who are they to tell me I can't even give my game to a friend and let them play it? So if it going to be true, if I was to lend my mate a game he would have to pay to play it on his system. That would be madness.

Steam doesn't allow me to lend my games or even buy second hand games. I hear nothing but praise for Valve and Steam.

That was one of the beauty's of console gaming though, if you had a game and your friend wanted to try it out you could just lend them the game. This would also limit the used game market for those that buy games, beat them immediately, and then sell them for others buy used.

And those days are over. publishers don't want you lending and sharing, they want you buying! Even if it's a reduced amount they still want to make more money than the currently are with the way the second hand market works.

Your acceptance into this "inevitable" fetal position about the future of games comes across as a little sardonic, but unfortunately it seems true. I find it a little unnerving that you're so happy to accept a future that basically isn't all that inevitable because, as far as we know, the PS4 isn't doing some of these things that the One is doing as it pertains to used copies.

The market evolves and adapts to how the world works. Games cost more than ever to develop and market so it makes sense that the developers and publishers want to make the maximum amount of money from the games they make. Second hand gaming was accepted in the past because it was a good way for games to be noticed and increase interest in future products. Now we have companies spending millions on marketing, huge sections of media devoted to video games and social media that allows people to share their thoughts and views on a game. They don't need that boost or hype any more.

If you think the PS4 won't have something similar, I think you're in for a very big shock. All Sony have said in regards to second hand games is that their system will allow them, just like Microsoft's system allows second hand games to be used.

EA is the biggest publisher, whatever deal they have with Microsoft for initial exclusive deals or content, it won't last more than a couple of years at most. EA is not going to remove online passes only to have the PS4 being able to run second hand games without them getting a cut. So either they introduce online passes for the PS4 only or the PS4 has the same system as Microsoft.

Not true, exactly.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/sony-on-ps4-used-games-we-are-going-to-do-the-right-thing-6404470

This quote, while it could be out of context, does sort of claim that a disc would be able to be distributed to console-to-console without an ID lock associated with it. But, we don't know for sure, certainly it's not absolute like Microsoft's has been claimed to be.

Also, you seem a little arrogant to your opinions beaming as fact. EA doesn't exactly equalize all platforms in terms of how they have content distributed or laid out. The EA games on Wii U, such as Mass Effect 3, have no DLC available for it on the store, which, you would think they would put out, due to it making them more money: but they don't.

I really think it's funny you're trying to sound like an educator as it persists to how "second-hand gaming was accepted", as if you know the industry from that angle. It was not just a marketing tool, if they even used it as such as a point. I'm pretty sure that used gaming wasn't necessarily used as a "boost" or "hype", more so a given task granted to the lack of technology there used to prohibit pre-owned sales in the first place, given it was a newer industry at the time.

Basically, you don't know and I don't know. So please don't act like you know.

You should also take under consideration that a lot of good developers are going out of business because of used game sales. Used games are also the reason why a lot of your favorite single player titles have shoehorned multiplayer modes. In the long run, the lack of used games might be the best thing to happen to console gaming. I feel kinda bad whenever I see a good single player game come and go where most people say they'll pick it up used for $10 in a year.

@humanity Well certainly companies going under is not something I like, but I can't imagine that used game sales are the only reason for it, considering that a first sale was still made on those games to at least insert the game into the used marketplace, and it's not the same single copy going around. I think that companies like that are sticking or heading towards digital distribution as there are no fears of used copies eating into their sales and it is cheaper to do in the long run.

Also, I also don't mind shoehorned multiplayer modes so as long as they're designed fairly well, a lot of single-player focused games have had surprisingly engaging multiplayer modes. Even then, a bonus mode is a bonus mode, can't complain about more options, necessarily.

The used game fee is alittle bogus... I'm just more excited by what PS4 has to offer so far! We'll see what happens at E3 but... I see Xbox making the same mistakes that PS made last time!

Requiring Kinect? Eat a fucking dick. I'll pick up the new controller for my PC and than buy a PS4 in a year or two. Even as someone who plays a lot of shooters and watches a lot of sports what exactly does this thing do that a DVR and a cellphone don't already do?

This online nonsense is pretty bad, I wonder how people in the army that use games for downtime would feel about this. I have friends that can't afford internet that spend hundreds of dollars a year on NEW Xbox games. They are being very anti-consumer with this. I feel this will just lead to more piracy with people who buy legal games being forced to use pirated copies just so they can play the game they brought without internet.

Looks like a device designed by nerds in suits. They've had like 5 clean years to get it right and this is the best they can offer? I actually stopped watching the press event as I was so board, not a good sign for someone who owns an Xbox 360 with 30+ games.

I live in a one room apartment with my wife. She watches TV, I don't watch TV at all. I play my xbox with headphones on at my desk on a monitor. I am really curious if I will even be able to use the Xbox One at my desk due to the Kinect features. So many questions. Am I going to have to use voice commands only or will I be able to navigate the menus with a controller? What about a headset for the system for chat in multiplayer games or is the kinect your mic now? Will Kinect even work right with me sitting in a chair at a desk less than two feet away from it?

I realize my situation is pretty unique, but it's the only way I can game. If I had to use the TV to game, I'd get to game maybe an hour a week. I hope there is a lot more information soon.

So I have been thinking about this XBone press conference and I'm really sad. As an Xbox 360 owner, I have to admit that I don't really want to lose access to all my Live Arcade games and I don't want to have 3 consoles connected to my TV (360, 1 and Ps3).

The instant streaming of PSN games that Ps4 promises really makes me want to buy that instead even though I don't have as many PSN purchases.

Also, the Ignite engine looked bad, nowhere near what I expect from next gen. WTF? Call of Duty Ghosts looks good, but needs more than a 4 hour single player, and multiplayer dominated by 15yo who play all day.

TV just sucks. Why would Microsoft embrace cable TV when it's on its way out with the growth of Netflix and Youtube? Who wants more cable TV fees???

I raise this half empty can of Busch Light hoping that Microsoft will really show what they got at E3, God help them and save the Queen.

This sounds like about what I expected from Microsoft's newest console. Microsoft has been really pushing the 360 as a 'multimedia device' for quite a while now and with this (horrendously named) new console they can really overcome the 360's limits as far as non-gaming stuff goes. I do have to wonder how this will work out for them though as reducing gaming to a (still fairly large) bullet point rather than the primary reason for the average person to buy a system does seem to make it seem more like a computer, at which point one may wonder why one shouldn't just buy a computer over an Xbox One (well, I guess there's the improved Kinect support, but they will really need to push that and provide actual notable games for it to make anyone care at this point).

Either way, it's good to see that each of the three main powers in the console industry is heading off in a distinct direction for this generation; Microsoft is going for a true multimedia device, Sony is looking to expand the ways players interact with console games in various ways, and Nintendo is crushing Sony in the handheld department while just sort of wasting away in the console market.

There is no expectation to be able to do that with digital games. However when you buy a boxed copy those expectations change.

The pricing of games on Steam are also completely fucking different from the pricing scheme on console games, boxed and digital.

Steam price of Metro Last Light - £34.99.

Amazon price of Xbox Metro Last Light - £34.99

Yes, Steam has a lot of sales but recently Xbox have been having a lot more sales that have been close to the quality and prices of Steam Sales.

The Xbox has never had a sale on the scale of Amazon or Steam. I have hardly paid more than twenty bucks for any game on my Steam list, and several of them are fairly new. I paid fifteen for Max Payne 3 last November, twenty for Sleeping Dogs and Darksiders 2 a month after they came out, Borderlands 2 was 13.49 just recently... Microsoft has never had such sales, and I don't think they'll start now. This isn't a problem for PC's partly because consumers can often wait for a sale and buy two copies for what one would cost on the consoles.

Not wanting to defend Xbox or anything, but I picked up Max Payne 3 for $5 during a crazy Xbox Live sale a few months back. Usually Games on Demand is a sales wasteland (200 points off some shitty DLC for gold members for instance) but they've been bringing it sales-wise in recent months. Hopefully this becomes an established trend for their Xbox One digital service going forward.

@insanejedi: At what point do you take ownership for being a shitty consumer who let companies take away all your first-sale doctrine and other rights away because you gave one a pass and so everyone else did it? People like you made the exact same bullshit proclamations about online passes and always-online DRM, and guess what! You were wrong and companies kept doing them because no one had any capacity to stop them because people like you kept trying to silence complaints and give them free passes to demand more out of the consumer because apparently their right to make money is more important than my right to own the thing I paid for with my money. So thanks for that.

Uhh... I won't and never will? Because if I want to spend $500 or however much on a machine regardless of DRM that's my decision and it's none of your fucking business to decide who to give my money to. If always-online DRM and Online passes make it not worth it to buy a game, then I won't buy the game or system, and they won't get my money. Companies kept doing them because most people didn't really care and wanted to play the new Call of Duty over being nickled and dimed for map packs that in PC land were previously free.

What part of "just don't buy the thing" if YOU don't like it you don't understand? I'm not giving them any free pass if the DRM is a deal breaker for people not buy the thing then that's their business and their decision. But if the DRM isn't then whatever, they can spend their money on whatever they care about.

No, I think you'll find that's called business.

So can the internet now agree that for the next 6 years forum dwellers will refer to Xbox advocates as Xboxo's (Ex-Bozo's)? Xbot is so passe.

This is more geared towards the American Dudebro ADD crowd than someone who loves games, too bad though. I don't understand the appeal of yelling at your TV like an asshole to frantically switch between playing a game, to watching a TV show, to listening to music, to watching sports, to watching a movie. It is just strange to need all of these things immediately, or even in the same sitting or day. I like sometimes listening to music while playing a game, but that was something they did 10 years ago.

The entire conference was just an agonizing yet banal fuck ton of buzzwords with slightly interesting things happening once or twice (like dog mo-cap, and the controller looked nice but it was a slightly improved 360 controller.) Meh. If it is anything like the last two Xboxes, the One will be a piracy haven, so if you are into that you may like it.

So far not impressed. Forza 5 is the only thing I even remotely give a shit about.

Sports? Give me a break.

for me the most exciting thing by far (except for new remedy IP) is the force feedback on the triggers. i'm not one for fetishising weapons of war but it could let them have different trigger stages on each gun. so a sniper rifle might have a short first stage and a really sensitive second stage. I don't think they'll actually do this but it'd add a completely new dimension to FPS games if they did.

Agreed, should add more immersion I think. Pretty good article on it here http://gizmodo.com/xbox-one-controller-hands-on-rumbling-triggers-are-fre-509174701#

@fiberpay: ...the Vita does that now.

The Vita lets me pull up the internet while watching a movie or switch to my cable TV and back to my game instantaneously on a 55-inch monitor?

Who wants to browse the web on their TV? Manufacturers have been trying to sell us that for years with "smart" TVs and without exception they've been pretty terrible. My TV watching companion these days is my phone or tablet and it works just fine, the TV is just too far away to read large amounts of text with any sort of comfort and navigation without touch or a mouse is a nightmare.

Perhaps I'm in the minority but I just don't see the use case for switching from TV to game to movie to music to web at light speed like I'm some sort of robot able to digest information in fractions of a second or a child who can't decide what he wants.

I think a much better idea is enriching the content on screen with a second screen you can simultaneously use, i.e. your tablet. Smart glass was a really excellent idea and it's a shame they didn't discuss it at all outside of a name drop.
