Microsoft Unveils the Xbox One [UPDATED x2]

Improved Kinect functionality, live TV support, and a heavy focus toward sports content were some of the key takeaways from today's press event.

If you were coming into today's Microsoft press event primarily expecting to see new hardware, new media content, and a lot of sports things, then you probably came away pretty excited about the Xbox One.

Microsoft unveiled the new console today to a crowd of press in Seattle, WA, assigning the new console its singular name, offering up basic specs and new app and hardware features, as well as a small selection of games from both internal and 3rd party publishers. Here's a brief rundown on what we saw:

The Hardware:

Don Mattrick, presenting the Xbox One.
Don Mattrick, presenting the Xbox One.

The Xbox One includes:

  • An 8-core CPU
  • 8GB of System Memory
  • A Blu-ray drive
  • 500GB HDD
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • HDMI In/Out portsW

While these stats were touched on, Microsoft was far more keen to show off its new interface and media support innovations. Much was made about "Snap mode," a feature that lets you jump between multiple running apps by with simple voice commands. The demonstration showed that you could jump between a video game, web browsing, and live TV, among other things, just by calling out the relevant application.

Yes, live TV was a big focus of the presentation as well. Confirming previous rumors, it was revealed that the Xbox One will allow you to hook your cable connection directly up to the box, and jump between the live TV and in-system apps with relative ease.

In addition to the core hardware, the Kinect hardware has seen a significant technological bump as well. The new Kinect features a 1080P HD RGB camera (which can be used for Skype calls), 30 FPS color, and an increased field of view. It will be bundled with all new Xbox One devices.

Sports!

Exclusive content for FIFA 14 is coming to Xbox One.
Exclusive content for FIFA 14 is coming to Xbox One.

Sports got a big push in today's presentation, both in live and in video game form. On the video game front, EA Sports announced a special partnership with Microsoft to bring its upcoming slate of sports titles to the Xbox One within the next year. Games included Madden NFL 25, its upcoming UFC game, the (again) revived NBA Live 14, and FIFA 14, the last of which will include exclusive Ultimate Team content on Xbox One.

In the live sports arena, Microsoft has entered into an agreement with the NFL to bring live game broadcasts, as well as fantasy sports content, to the system.

Halo: The Series

One of the more unexpected moments came when the event cut to Steven Spielberg, who, via video, announced that he would be partnering with Microsoft to bring a new Halo TV series exclusively to Xbox One. His exact role on the project was not detailed, nor was any potential production date for the series.

Remedy and Forza

Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind the cult Xbox 360 favorite Alan Wake, showed off a brief, baffling trailer for its new Xbox One exclusive game, Quantum Break. The trailer mixed live action footage of a mother and her strange little girl, and presumably in-game (or at least pre-rendered) footage of a large ship crashing into a bridge, and then suddenly rewinding. More about the game is expected to be revealed at E3.

Microsoft also unveiled the expected, but certainly not unwelcome Forza Motorsport 5. After all, what would a next-gen console reveal be without exquisitely rendered video game cars?

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: There's a Dog Now
Call of Duty: There's a Dog Now

As expected, bulk of the show's end was dedicated to Activision's upcoming Call of Duty sequel, Ghosts, which will feature exclusive downloadable content on Xbox One. Ghosts, which is in development at Infinity Ward, features a script from Traffic and Syriana screenwriter Stephen Gaghan that follows a single soldier...and his trusty dog. Yes, much ado was made about a Navy SEAL dog buddy you'll have working alongside your character throughout the game. This dog was motion-captured, even, and will help out as a sort of companion A.I.

What Came After

Beyond the above, little else was learned at today's event, outside of a claim of 15 exclusive games scheduled for the system's first year, and a nebulous "later this year" release window. However, more information has been coming since the event ended, including additional games and a few answers to some lingering questions.

On the subject of backward compatibility, Engadget is reporting that the Xbox One will not play Xbox 360 games, nor digital games built for the 360 architecture. However, as small consolation, gamertags and scores will carry over to the new system.

As for the system's much-talked-about, but previously unconfirmed "always online" functionality, Wired's report on the console states that the system won't always be online. However, developers could make use of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service, which could present situations where the system would have to be online.

That doesn't quite answer the lingering question of how the Xbox One might handle used games. The Wired article notes that games can be installed to the system, and may have to be. For games that have been previously installed, second players would be prompted with a note saying they could pay a fee to add their account to the game and install it. However, Microsoft wouldn't make a complete declaration about whether or not other players would ever be able to ever play a used game without having to install/pay an additional fee.

UPDATE: Microsoft Support has officially denied Wired's report regarding potential fees for used games via Twitter, and stated that it has sent a correction to them. Wired's report currently still mentions the fees.

UPDATE 2: Eurogamer was able to get Microsoft's Phil Harrison to confirm the original fees report. Sort of. The example mentioned in the Wired article was confirmed by Harrison, though he mentioned that the ability for multiple users to share the same game would be possible, and that a "solution" for the used market was in place. He did not, however, specify what that solution may entail.

Lastly, multiple third-party games have been announced as coming to Xbox One, including EA's Battlefield 4, Square-Enix's upcoming Thief remake, as well as Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch_Dogs.

We'll bring you more on the Xbox One as it becomes available.

I feel kinda bad whenever I see a good single player game come and go where most people say they'll pick it up on steam for $10 in a year.

Fix'd

I say to those developers if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen. We as consumers have every right to wait for price drops, and I will continue to do it for most of the games that I purchase. If Microsoft is going to insist on selling me games that are 2-3 years old for full price still, then no thanks.

After all this, I am even more confused by the misinformation and unwillingness to be clear surrounding this new console. Do I have to pay a fee for used games to work or not? Do I have to be online at least once every 24 hours or not? Do I have to install every game I play or not? If the Kinect has to be plugged in for the system to work, is it always watching me? I certainly got creepy HAL 9000 vibe from that camera.

All-in-all, Microsoft better step up to the plate at E3, because this presentation just bored the hell out of me. I swear I nearly drifted off several times.

The format for these press conferences is nauseating. It's just another reminder of how out of touch these companies are with their customers and just how bad they are at communicating with the press.

Here is how this should have went down.

1. Show console (at least they did this)

2. Talk about features (just a quick run down demos can be shown at E3)

3. Give a list of full specs (notate next to specs that aren't finalized or could change)

4. Give a list of launch titles (got this part right even if partial)

5. Show actual gameplay demo of one launch title (not a game trailer even if it is rendered in-game)

6. Open up the rest of the time for QA from the press (this way the real questions people want to know get brought up even if MS can't answer they need to know what people are really interested to know)

PS4 is really more appealing to me right now though. I couldn't care less about any of the features the Xbox One has. I don't watch TV. I don't give a fuck about fantasy football. I don't use Skype because I have a cell phone like pretty much everyone else does. I don't like motion controls or the kinect (PS4 will have the eye yeah but it's never going to be as integrated with the system as kinect is with xbox plus I have a feeling it will be optional unlike kinect) I don't care about any MS exclusives except for Forza which I can live without thanks to Gran Turismo. I don't need gimmicky voice command bullshit that is susceptible to input from other people who might be in the room . I don't need a console that runs more than one app at the same time because there is this thing called a PC. I only need it to play games. That's it.

I'll be honest though I pretty much use the PC for everything. All my friends are on Steam as well as 90% of my games. It seems like the Xbox One wants to be a PC and will probably cost just as much as one but won't be as good. You'll have to deal with advertisements and xbox live and all the other shit that comes with a proprietary system/network. No thanks. Not sure who this is even marketed at if the price tag is over $500. The console also looks like a VCR :D

I'm ok with this system so far except one thing- is it true we have to install our games to play them? That bothers me a lot. Sure, they are probably thinking this is best for performance since the optical drive isn't ultra fast and with Blu-ray there's a crap load of data to access. (Multiple tens of gigabytes). But still... I think that should be a choice. If you want to reduce load times install the game. If you are fine loading off the disc then don't install. At least you don't have to worry about filling the 500 gig hard drive which you could easily do with just 10-20 retail games (assuming the games use most the capacity of the discs).

@yownage: RIGHT GUYS? Please be right, oh please be right. the reveal today atleast showed the box, but i stopped watching about an hour in and just looked for quicker stuff to see what was up. At least that game by remedy looks cool, the specs are nice, and the blu ray drive should be dope. Alex was spot on about the price, if they think they can sell this for above $500, they are crazy. We are in a recession for christs sake, people need to be able to pick this up for $300-400 at the most.

@fiberpay: ...the Vita does that now.

The Vita lets me pull up the internet while watching a movie or switch to my cable TV and back to my game instantaneously on a 55-inch monitor?

Who wants to browse the web on their TV? Manufacturers have been trying to sell us that for years with "smart" TVs and without exception they've been pretty terrible. My TV watching companion these days is my phone or tablet and it works just fine, the TV is just too far away to read large amounts of text with any sort of comfort and navigation without touch or a mouse is a nightmare.

Perhaps I'm in the minority but I just don't see the use case for switching from TV to game to movie to music to web at light speed like I'm some sort of robot able to digest information in fractions of a second or a child who can't decide what he wants.

I think a much better idea is enriching the content on screen with a second screen you can simultaneously use, i.e. your tablet. Smart glass was a really excellent idea and it's a shame they didn't discuss it at all outside of a name drop.

As someone who uses Netflix, ESPN, Hulu, YouTube, aand occasionally IE and Crackle, I can say the short wait time to load apps will be amazing. How can you find the fact this it loads apps faster useless? Somehow comparing that to a child who does not know what they want?

Yes on the 360 IE is not very user friendly having to use the controller to navigate a mouse but but with the much improved kinect, as noted by the article coming out, that should be a much improved experience.

I have my phone and tablet and laptop right next to me as well but having on my large TV screen will make for a much better experience when I can control what is on my big screen with my phone as they showed in the demo.

Overall for me this will be a great system if it works as shown in the demo as I would love to be playing Forza 5 and then be notified when one of the TV shows I watch comes on and it instantly switches to it and when it's over I can go back to my game right where I left off.

Now all we can do is wait for E3 to see Xbox's game lineup compared to Sony's that showed quite a few sequels :(.

Sony has showed me nothing that system can do besides upload the games you play which as an adult I have no need to do that. It's not like i'm going to show my friends at work a sweet kill I did or something.

Xbox at least showed us the box can do something besides gaming. Considering this is a game console I have no worries that their wont be games for both boxes just like last generation, just look at all the cross platform games.

tl;dr I have no reason to doubt that there will be games and at least Xbox showed us this box can do more than just play games and upload some videos like PS has shown.

Like many, I'm less than impressed by the Xbox One. The name is rather odd; I'd rather they went with Ryan Davis' suggestion and just called it "The Xbox". OTOH, I like the simple styling of the box. Plenty of ventilation, yet still has a flat surface I could put a remote or something on top of.

The emphasis on the Kinect voice stuff did nothing for me. In fact, it was more of a detriment. When they showed that you could just say "HBO" to change the channel, all I could think of is my pre-school age kids annoying each other by saying "Disney Jr." and "No, Nick Jr." back and forth. They already say this trying to get *me* to change the channel. If they could do it themselves, they'd think they were gods.

Also, I'm a *huge* NFL fan, been playing Fantasy Football since '98, yet I couldn't give two shits about Fantasy Football integration with a gaming console. I have a laptop and a smartphone that I use to get updates. Been doing this for years and dont see the big improvement by having it on an XB1. I wish they would have said a but more about the "exclusive content" they are getting from the NFL. If they are getting things like the 'Coach's Tape' or 'All 22' camera angle of the games, that could be exciting. Short of that: meh.

As far as games, IMO, most of the games are just more of the same and, frankly, stuff that I dont play anyway (4 Forza games on the 360 and I never played one). I cant even get "excited" by "Quantum Break" because the trailer was so fucking cryptic that I have no idea what is going on (not excites, but I am intrigued).

All in all, The One is far down on my list. The PS4 has me more excited, but really, I'm leaning more and more towards enlisting in the "Master Race" and just building a gaming PC. I'm not huge on MS exclusives and while I like Sony games, most of the stuff I play is 3rd party.

Of course, I reserve the right to revise and extend my remarks come E3. ;)

Hopefully E3 brings out the stuff from both Microsoft and Sony. No games from Microsoft but all I really saw from Sony were a bunch of trailers so that's not much better. Gotta see some games in action!

I like the controller better than the PS4 though that's for sure. Very stupid name though as others have mentioned.

Well that settles that, PS4 for me. That was far worse than I expected.

I can't decide if the X1 is going to be a huge hit or a WiiU-esque smoking crater. I wonder if it will be both, a huge hit with the casual users, but fail badly among the hardcore gamers. Maybe the new Wii?

@fiberpay:

Of course it's going to have games, I never suggested it wouldn't. In fact outside of a select few exclusives the games available on each platform will be more or less the same given that the hardware is pretty much identical and development isn't getting any cheaper.

As far as suggesting that the only PS4 feature announced was the ability to upload videos? Did you forget all the other features like live game broadcast, shared game control, instant sleep/wake that saves the game state, instant play while streaming a game download and streaming PS4 games remotely to the Vita

Those are all great features that I thought were an absolute given for the next Xbox, perhaps they still are in there, but none of them were discussed today which was why the reveal left a negative impression. Any one of those features seems infinitely more useful to me than the ability to alt-tab my TV.

We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. The answer to all of your questions is yes.

So freakishly dreary. Nothing new, no peripheral or new idea, just the same old crap in a different (and way uglier) box. This is why people are migrating to PC's. This, and that they're not 14 years anymore and can actually afford a pc. PC's have tons of cool gadgetry that boosts imersion.
Oculus Rift stands a good chance of really changing the gaming landscape. Judging by previous consoles, adapting weird tech has never been particularly common. It rules out everyone who resfuse to buy an expensive (very expensive in this case) peice of hardware, that means developers have a rather small audience out there, which means minigames and party shit.. and that's not really doable for VR.. so console gamers might very well have to live one whole generation before they get VR. 8 years or so. It's good that they launch their consoles ahead of the VR gen, cause damn.. Tough shit.

Then again, maybe VR will flop yet again... :/

I know it's difficult for some people not to be cynical after yesterday's reveal, but I'll hold my final judgment until after E3.

I'll admit, however, that Microsoft's reveal felt underwhelming and that it left more questions than answers behind. But maybe I'm in the minority on this, but Sony's reveal didn't exactly blow my boots off with exciting games. Both companies will have to show their tricks up their sleeves on E3.

If I have to pay a fee to play a used game I have bought from a store or anyone, then maybe xbox one isn't for me. Who are they to tell me I can't even give my game to a friend and let them play it? So if it going to be true, if I was to lend my mate a game he would have to pay to play it on his system. That would be madness.

Steam doesn't allow me to lend my games or even buy second hand games. I hear nothing but praise for Valve and Steam.

Steam offers their games at way cheaper prices than Microsoft does, giving quite the competitive edge. And digital games are IMO fine to not be able to share, it makes sense and as time has gone on I've grown more accustomed to the idea.

The problem is that I feel a console is built to be a splitscreen/shared experience, compared to a PC (which is shortened from PERSONAL Computer, after all), which IMO is meant to be for one person to play on at a time. But a console is made for multiple people at once, so it always feels like a more shared experience. And so in this spirit of sharing and caring, I like the idea of being able to chip in some money with a few friends, pick up a game to play, and several of us sit down and play four player split screen. Then, since we ALL paid part of the cost, it seems fair to me that we should be able to bring the game from house to house, playing on multiple accounts. I mean, we all paid for the game, did we not?

Just my thoughts. Overall I'm leery about the next gen consoles as is, and if this is the case I'll probably just end up passing. PC gaming is probably cheaper in the long run anyways.

Just a question if the game ties into your xbox live account and the new xbox can detect and switch Xbox live account depending on who is using the controller, can you even share the game on the same console.

Also regarding the online DRM i think reporters are missing a big reason why i hate the idea isn't my internet. Its what happens when theirs sevice goes down, like sonys did for a month a few years back. If it were to happen would the xbox 1 turn into an expensive doorstop.

pretty disappointed by this press release marathon. They said 'magic and engineering' like 4 times. Ugh! I owned a 360 (until rrod). I really liked it.

Also, bad copy of the 360-presser years ago. Anyone remember Peter Jackson? - Now we have Steven Spielberg! Racing game bla bla...

Personally, my gut tells me that EVERYTHING MGS will materialise 2014 at the earliest (maybe except Forza). Spielbergs project gets cancelled. TV won't pick up. And Kinect? Nevermind.

And no share functionality like Sony?? No partnership with twitch or others? Tells me one thing: Microsoft is WAY behind Sony on that front. Maybe E3? Don't care anymore.

Don't care about backward compatibility, got a 360 to play this gen titles same as I got the original Xbox to play its games. At least they showed the console which looks like an old DVD player unlike Sony who didn't show it at their announcement press conference, they release a blurry video with close ups of the system and still don't show you what it looks like, pointless video. As for used games be a bit of a cheek to charge people a fee to activate them, they could very simply have a code on the disc which would confirm if its new or used by simply having a data base with the games reg code and the console id code that it is registered to and then deactivate the game on the console it was first installed on and then activate it on your console.

Both companies will have to show their tricks up their sleeves on E3.

totally agree. i think forming a strong opinion before we see whats on show at E3 is pointless.

but hey that won't stop the crazy internet metals!

A solution for the used games market is in place? That solution in their mind, seems to be taking hold themselves of the used market and it's profits. But I don't see how's that possible with physical copies.

Internal shot of the console:

I'm large dimensions of the system looks to be a necessity to cool all the components. Just check out how fat that CPU cooler is.

Is that an internal power supply on the left, seems to be. No more power brick would be nice.
