Microsoft Unveils the Xbox One [UPDATED x2]

Improved Kinect functionality, live TV support, and a heavy focus toward sports content were some of the key takeaways from today's press event.

If you were coming into today's Microsoft press event primarily expecting to see new hardware, new media content, and a lot of sports things, then you probably came away pretty excited about the Xbox One.

Microsoft unveiled the new console today to a crowd of press in Seattle, WA, assigning the new console its singular name, offering up basic specs and new app and hardware features, as well as a small selection of games from both internal and 3rd party publishers. Here's a brief rundown on what we saw:

The Hardware:

Don Mattrick, presenting the Xbox One.
Don Mattrick, presenting the Xbox One.

The Xbox One includes:

  • An 8-core CPU
  • 8GB of System Memory
  • A Blu-ray drive
  • 500GB HDD
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • HDMI In/Out portsW

While these stats were touched on, Microsoft was far more keen to show off its new interface and media support innovations. Much was made about "Snap mode," a feature that lets you jump between multiple running apps by with simple voice commands. The demonstration showed that you could jump between a video game, web browsing, and live TV, among other things, just by calling out the relevant application.

Yes, live TV was a big focus of the presentation as well. Confirming previous rumors, it was revealed that the Xbox One will allow you to hook your cable connection directly up to the box, and jump between the live TV and in-system apps with relative ease.

In addition to the core hardware, the Kinect hardware has seen a significant technological bump as well. The new Kinect features a 1080P HD RGB camera (which can be used for Skype calls), 30 FPS color, and an increased field of view. It will be bundled with all new Xbox One devices.

Sports!

Exclusive content for FIFA 14 is coming to Xbox One.
Exclusive content for FIFA 14 is coming to Xbox One.

Sports got a big push in today's presentation, both in live and in video game form. On the video game front, EA Sports announced a special partnership with Microsoft to bring its upcoming slate of sports titles to the Xbox One within the next year. Games included Madden NFL 25, its upcoming UFC game, the (again) revived NBA Live 14, and FIFA 14, the last of which will include exclusive Ultimate Team content on Xbox One.

In the live sports arena, Microsoft has entered into an agreement with the NFL to bring live game broadcasts, as well as fantasy sports content, to the system.

Halo: The Series

One of the more unexpected moments came when the event cut to Steven Spielberg, who, via video, announced that he would be partnering with Microsoft to bring a new Halo TV series exclusively to Xbox One. His exact role on the project was not detailed, nor was any potential production date for the series.

Remedy and Forza

Remedy Entertainment, the developer behind the cult Xbox 360 favorite Alan Wake, showed off a brief, baffling trailer for its new Xbox One exclusive game, Quantum Break. The trailer mixed live action footage of a mother and her strange little girl, and presumably in-game (or at least pre-rendered) footage of a large ship crashing into a bridge, and then suddenly rewinding. More about the game is expected to be revealed at E3.

Microsoft also unveiled the expected, but certainly not unwelcome Forza Motorsport 5. After all, what would a next-gen console reveal be without exquisitely rendered video game cars?

Call of Duty: Ghosts

Call of Duty: There's a Dog Now
Call of Duty: There's a Dog Now

As expected, bulk of the show's end was dedicated to Activision's upcoming Call of Duty sequel, Ghosts, which will feature exclusive downloadable content on Xbox One. Ghosts, which is in development at Infinity Ward, features a script from Traffic and Syriana screenwriter Stephen Gaghan that follows a single soldier...and his trusty dog. Yes, much ado was made about a Navy SEAL dog buddy you'll have working alongside your character throughout the game. This dog was motion-captured, even, and will help out as a sort of companion A.I.

What Came After

Beyond the above, little else was learned at today's event, outside of a claim of 15 exclusive games scheduled for the system's first year, and a nebulous "later this year" release window. However, more information has been coming since the event ended, including additional games and a few answers to some lingering questions.

On the subject of backward compatibility, Engadget is reporting that the Xbox One will not play Xbox 360 games, nor digital games built for the 360 architecture. However, as small consolation, gamertags and scores will carry over to the new system.

As for the system's much-talked-about, but previously unconfirmed "always online" functionality, Wired's report on the console states that the system won't always be online. However, developers could make use of Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service, which could present situations where the system would have to be online.

That doesn't quite answer the lingering question of how the Xbox One might handle used games. The Wired article notes that games can be installed to the system, and may have to be. For games that have been previously installed, second players would be prompted with a note saying they could pay a fee to add their account to the game and install it. However, Microsoft wouldn't make a complete declaration about whether or not other players would ever be able to ever play a used game without having to install/pay an additional fee.

UPDATE: Microsoft Support has officially denied Wired's report regarding potential fees for used games via Twitter, and stated that it has sent a correction to them. Wired's report currently still mentions the fees.

UPDATE 2: Eurogamer was able to get Microsoft's Phil Harrison to confirm the original fees report. Sort of. The example mentioned in the Wired article was confirmed by Harrison, though he mentioned that the ability for multiple users to share the same game would be possible, and that a "solution" for the used market was in place. He did not, however, specify what that solution may entail.

Lastly, multiple third-party games have been announced as coming to Xbox One, including EA's Battlefield 4, Square-Enix's upcoming Thief remake, as well as Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Watch_Dogs.

We'll bring you more on the Xbox One as it becomes available.

It's pretty sly on their part to deliberately be non-committal about games working on different consoles. I suppose they are relying on the whole media glitz around it to gloss over any potential anti-consumer activities they might be pushing forward with this console. Let's face it, the average buyer at the store won't be told about these things. They will most likely hear PR bullshit like, "the console is geared to delivering a unique experience to the customer with special 'personalization' features etc. etc. etc.". What if personalization means having your game tied to your console?

What bothers me more is the constant defending of anti-consumer practices by consumers themselves on this forum and other gaming sites or by people posing as 'consumers'. I'm aware of the power of Search Engine Management to try and change the public's perception of a company online, but it is still very annoying to see.

Not to say that I think Sony is clean either. I'm going to wait for a couple of years at the very least until these people can make a product that doesn't die in a few months due to over-heating.

@kidavenger: My guess is that it reflects the "one system that does everything" mentality of this steaming pile.

Internal shot of the console:

I'm large dimensions of the system looks to be a necessity to cool all the components. Just check out how fat that CPU cooler is.

Is that an internal power supply on the left, seems to be. No more power brick would be nice.

The grey piece on the left with the red sticker is the slim BR drive, power brick is external through a proprietary connector, unless one of the promo shots showing the plug had something amiss.

Sony is a mystery. By design tradition they're aiming for an internal power supply, based on tech and cooling I'm thinking external. The PS3 power supplies are meaty but tiny and well-designed for what they are.. maybe we'll see that instead of anything even resembling the 360 brick, or even the Wii brick.

Ehh, so far I'm very disappointed in what Microsoft has shown. Seems like this console was not made with the European market in mind at all. Sports content and live TV support? Even if I cared one iota about those features, they will either be terrible or not exist at all in most European countries.

And what about the games? Hard to get excited about a new VIDEO GAME console when the most interesting thing revealed about it is a vague promise of exclusive titles down the line. Hopefully we'll some of those at E3.

The worst news of all is without a doubt the lack of backwards compatibility for the XBLA titles. I honestly can't believe this if it's true.

No ofcourse not, only idiots would be sold on a one hour press conference of false promises and hyperbole aimed at the mass market audience. Anyone serious about buying a next gen console would research their options up until release. Every great franchise you enjoyed on the 360\PS3 will be on the next gen systems, you would have to be really silly to think the only games released on Xbox One are FIFA, Madden and COD.

Man! It looks like a BIG, UGLY DESKTOP PC! :-( I can build a better looking PC for my Living Room that would be more aesthetically pleasing to look at. And you're right bmccann42: It appears to be a sports box.

Well, let's see what Sony has on offer. Maybe I'll switch, or retreat back to my PC as the only gaming platform to care about.

I was really unimpressed. First, the industrial design is a backward step at a time when aesthetics really matter in electronics. This looks like it's trying to replace the DVR, not just in terms of features but also appearance. It's also trying to be everything to everyone and totally losing focus in the process. The first 25 minutes were all about the TV functionality, most of which won't be relevant to the majority of Xbox owners who don't live in the US. Of those that do, I think the majority would consider the games the priority which speaks volumes about how MS is not in touch with its user base. Games come first with apps and other functionality an added benefit (depending on your point of view). Then, when they finally spoke about the games, there's the multitude of issues that they didn't address properly - the backwards compatibility, the rumours about second-hand games, etc. I've had an Xbox 360 since day one and I don't want to know that my massive library of games will be totally worthless to me once my fifth console goes the same way that the previous four did. Upgrading shouldn't mean starting from scratch and rendering worthless thousands of bucks worth of stuff.

I could go on forever, but I'm in line with many of the views expressed around the web today which is that I'm underwhelmed.

Let's say Microsoft has some work set out for them to redeem this thing at E3...

I'm still not 100% on how this used games system of theirs is supposed to work, but it sounds terrible and like a potential dealbreaker. If they're seriously telling me that if I want to give a game to my brother, he has to fucking buy it from them, they can fuck right off. That's just...I can't believe that's...something must've gotten lost in translation right?

After giving some time for thought, my take away from the show remains how ready I am for that dog to be part of my squad. Perhaps this has more to do with having my own service German Shepherd dog. I probably will be playing it on PC or Xbox 360 if PC, for some unforeseen reason, is unavailable at launch; which I doubt. Also, I rarely play any multiplayer and am one of the fabled "Single Player Gamers" that people often hear about, but never see in the wild. The rest of the show was pretty boring and made me happy that I already have a laptop better than current or next-gen consoles to game on.

@vibratingdonkey: They may think if your or my bro want to play a borrowed game anymore, that they can use your/my xbox. Perhaps since my brother has his own xbox and your brother probably does too, they are assuming our brothers could cough up the cash if the inconvenience is too high. I hope they aren't betting on this because as you said, dealbreaker. My brother lives ten feet away but we have separate lives and I don't want him and he doesn't want me "coming over" to play a game regularly if we are not playing multiplayer together. Even then, we usually play over the network on our separate boxes and TVs.

I am curious what deals existing rental places would make with publishers though. Redboxes are all over the place here and GameFly is big enough that they might strike a deal for their customers of some kind. They have done so in the past for content and modes locked behind pay walls. When the last Battlefield shipped the entire online part of the game was locked. A few days later GF had worked out a deal to get lots of codes for their customers so they could use the game at least for a few weeks without further purchase.

@rye256: Yeah, lending, renting, gifting are on the line here. Trading and selling might be affected to some degree as well. Microsoft won't say what they're poking and prodding at there.

A solution for lending/gifting would be to give them the game and your login details. It is a pretty shitty solution. I assume the minute you log in they'll get logged out and vice versa. Also bad security practice.

Really, really hope Sony isn't going down this route too.

Of course it's going to have games, I never suggested it wouldn't. In fact outside of a select few exclusives the games available on each platform will be more or less the same given that the hardware is pretty much identical and development isn't getting any cheaper.

As far as suggesting that the only PS4 feature announced was the ability to upload videos? Did you forget all the other features like live game broadcast, shared game control, instant sleep/wake that saves the game state, instant play while streaming a game download and streaming PS4 games remotely to the Vita

Those are all great features that I thought were an absolute given for the next Xbox, perhaps they still are in there, but none of them were discussed today which was why the reveal left a negative impression. Any one of those features seems infinitely more useful to me than the ability to alt-tab my TV.

The "Alt-Tab" function is not just for your tv it also does the instant sleep/wake that the PS4 showed. Did you even watch their demo? It instantly booted up his game in the last place he was. I included the live game broadcast in my upload video response, that's something that to me again is useless. I'm an adult and have no need to upload my game plays anywhere to show them to anyone.

I agree. I've bought Collector's Editions of 360 games & now they'll be worthless. I'll never buy a Collector's Edition of anything on consoles again as I can now firmly state that console designers won't care about whether I can play them on the next console iteration. I feel ripped off. Thanks Microsoft.

Both new consoles are so close to a PC in many aspects (from Hardware to DRM, all across the board), I fail to see why I should refer to them as "gaming consoles" at all. As far as I am concerned, the new generation is a Sony PC, a Microsoft PC and … the PC.

Remember Nintendo GameCube being called GCN (Game Cube Nintendo)? How about calling this the MXO, Microsoft Xbox One. That'd also be the reverse lettering of their magazine, OXM. It even sounds like MSX, that Japanese PC stalwart.

So if it going to be true, if I was to lend my mate a game he would have to pay to play it on his system. That would be madness.

Steam doesn't allow me to lend my games or even buy second hand games. I hear nothing but praise for Valve and Steam.

There is no expectation to be able to do that with digital games. However when you buy a boxed copy those expectations change.

No there is absolutely no expectation of that. When I bought a boxed copy of World of Warcraft I couldn't give it to my friend to play. I couldn't let him borrow my boxed copy of Half-Life, or Half-Life 2, or Portal.

As much as I love steam for my pc, Being able to lend my friends my consoll games, and borrow theirs is a GIVEN. Money saver, good way to experience other games, sosial (couch-multiplayer(at mine or friends house without having to bring my consoll)> online).

I also enjoy having the discs on my shelf. CONSOLL discs, not PC (Which has allways been install->crack->forget where the box even is anymore)

The reason for this is obviouslly that they don't want peiople to play their games for free, which is fair enough, but jeez..

Maybe I'm just being paranoid.. but i can't shake that feeling that all this focus on video/TV content, coupled with the fact Kinect is an requirement that's always watching/listening in to you, has something to do with a patent that Microsoft filed about 2 years ago.

Talking about this one: http://appft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PG01&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrchnum.html&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=%2220120278904%22.PGNR.&OS=DN/20120278904&RS=DN/20120278904

A content presentation system and method allowing content providers to regulate the presentation of content on a per-user-view basis.

Basically Microsoft patented the "idea" to charge people based on a per viewer basis, in their own living room. It's like the epitome of DRM insanity. Having a Kinect that's turned on 100% of the time and connected to the internet seems like a match made in haven for that kind of "idea".

Imagine you having to pay on a per-viewer basis when you rent a digital movie to watch it in your living room. It's the future we always dreamed about... not. But it's certainly a future that Microsoft and the Content-Mafia has always dreamed about, now it seems to be coming true.

Like i said, maybe I'm just too paranoid... but all of this fits together way too good to be simply some kind of coincidence. And let's be honest here, they already succeeded in convincing customers that being able to sell property they bought is something "evil" (No i don't care that you only buy a "license"). So the idea of charging you on a per viewer basis in your own living room is not really that far off from that kind of reasoning...

If I can't tape a piece of paper in front of my Kinect camera... No sale.

I don't do that to my laptops, but I apricate the fact that I can and it won't ruin the system.

@tupacalypse: Not the best comparison. You don't have to use Steam for playing games on the PC. If lending and gifting is important to you there's always the option of getting a disc version - which you can even choose to run through Steam, by the way, as external software. This obviously wouldn't be an option on the XBOne.

That said, I seriously doubt it's anywhere near as Draconian as it sounds. Not because I trust in Microsofts moral judgement but because I trust them not to be complete morons. If there's one thing you never, ever do in business it is consciously gimping your own products in a way that makes your competitor the clearly superior option. The only way a scheme like this could work would be if Sony has the exact same solution implemented as well.

As I think more about it, I'm kind of surprised there isn't more concern about privacy over the new Kinect stuff. I don't like the idea of installing what is basically a security camera/listening device in my home. With the current Kinect it's an optional peripheral, but it seems like the new one will be on all the time. Is there a way for me to know what data Microsoft collects, when it collects it and who Microsoft might share it with? It just seems shady. I believe they also said that developers could use the camera to tell if you're scared or excited or whatever. So can developers (or outside corporations) collect data on me too?

I don't mean to be paranoid, but I just haven't seen concrete answers to these questions and I find it a little invasive that the Kinect is required to be on.

If I have to pay a fee to play a used game I have bought from a store or anyone, then maybe xbox one isn't for me. Who are they to tell me I can't even give my game to a friend and let them play it? So if it going to be true, if I was to lend my mate a game he would have to pay to play it on his system. That would be madness.

Steam doesn't allow me to lend my games or even buy second hand games. I hear nothing but praise for Valve and Steam.

If MS offers the same crazy sales that Valve does on Steam I don't think you'll see many complaints, but I doubt this will happen.

@extreme_popcorn: You are right, however I rarely buy a $60 title on Steam. The sales mean I don't have to buy them used.

I am a firmly entrenched fan of Microsoft and the 360. Once again, I say firmly. The details regarding the One thus far are deeply concerning to me. I think I might not be their target demographic any longer.

So just to be clear, was there ANY mention of what European customers are going to get with all this "TV" malarky? I know its way too early to judge yet, but if it is only half a product for the same price (judging from that presentation, TV seems to be as large a focus as games), why the hell would I buy it?

The "Alt-Tab" function is not just for your tv it also does the instant sleep/wake that the PS4 showed. Did you even watch their demo? It instantly booted up his game in the last place he was. I included the live game broadcast in my upload video response, that's something that to me again is useless. I'm an adult and have no need to upload my game plays anywhere to show them to anyone.

Sounds to me like you're an "adult" with no friends or at least not a single one that shares this interest with you which is equally sad. Also yes I watched all of the coverage on offer yesterday and they haven't confirmed that the Xone can suspend the game state and instantly resume, just that it can instantly switch to other content while the console is still on, nothing was specified about when you turn it off.

lol ok. You're pretty funny kid. Actually about half of my friends do play games but we have no need to show each other a "sweet headshot" we got in COD. What's sad is you think showing your "sweet headshot" to your friends is fun an interesting, lol. Those features on PS4 are for children with nothing better to do that sit in their moms house and stream themselves playing a game lol. That's a sad life.

@nights: Thank a lot. The weird thing is that people see this as a sort of anti-Microsoft video, but they kind of did it themselves. All I did was cut out everything but every instance of "TV", "Television", "Sports" and "Call of Duty" plus a few other things... and of course the dog since it's super cute and because THEY MOCAPPED A DOG! :D

What the HELL is up with that name? One? Looks like Microsoft failed to pass basic kindergarten math skills. I would rather call it the: XBOX W.T.T.Y.P.O.S. for (Work This Time You Piece Of Shit).

About the controversy on Used games... let them stay. I will stick with only buying physical mediums. Valve (and other digital distributions) can go shove it with their market monopoly. Its really annoying seeing the majority of physical medium based games use steam as a requirement for install. I don't need that stuff. Not being able to play used games will probably in some cases cripple Microsoft's XBOX costumer base.

This is getting petty so this is where I bow out. For the record though I don't play multiplayer shooters and rarely even play competitive multiplayer of any sort, I'd like to but I don't have the time for it. The fact that you think streaming and sharing game footage is for socially stunted basement dwellers is short sighted and hypocritical. What do you think this very website is based around? lol ok....

Not at all. I like video games and I'm sure they'll probably have some of those at E3, but it wasn't until I scrubbed the video for words that I noticed them mentioning "15 new exclusives in the first year" and got excited to see what they are... I sure hope it's not 14 Kinect games and a Halo game.

My initial reaction to the show was "They sure talked about TV and sports alot... It would be funny to see how much" and that's what made me cut the video. I initially had planned to leave out the Call of Duty part, but I really liked the fact that they had such a big focus on the dog that I wanted to give it some context.

I also think that "Xbox Go Home" sounded a bit dumb the first time I heard it.

I've been thinking that all this Kinect stuff might be allright. I mean, I don't wanna jump around like a mong, but imagine what kind of super crazy stuff someone like Kojima could do with it if he knew that every system had a Kinect connected.

@nicked: Well Gorges Orwell is probably rotating in his grave right now. Not only is his "a Camera in every household" vision coming true, people are even paying that camera out of their own pockets!

Even he couldn't make up that kind of insanity xD

@samdrugbringer: That's an interesting question, guess in the end it boils down to how Kinect is able to recognize your for signing in. Maybe it only requires a microphone for voice recognition? Somehow i doubt it, they probably are using voice and image recognition to make sure the right person logs in.

I'm sure trying some of this stuff out is among the first thing quite a few people gonna do after getting their shiny new Xbox One.
